Capture that state under a descriptive checkpoint name, compare it with an approved baseline, and review any differences. The screenshot is an additional assertion about the rendered interface; it does not replace the scenario’s behavioral purpose.
Where visual assertions belong in a BDD scenario
BDD examples describe behavior in terms a team can discuss and automate. Cucumber describes BDD as “a way for software teams to work that closes the gap between business people and technical people by:” Cucumber’s Behaviour-Driven Development documentation explains that collaborative framing.
Keep the Gherkin scenario focused on the behavior—such as signing in or submitting a form—and put screenshot capture in the supporting UI automation at the point where the expected screen is actually rendered. A useful checkpoint might be a completed sign-in, a validation error, or a submitted form. Avoid a screenshot after every step: prioritize states where a layout or rendering regression would matter.
How to add visual regression testing to Cucumber tests
- Choose a meaningful state. Identify a screen that demonstrates an important scenario outcome, rather than capturing incidental intermediate steps.
- Make the state repeatable. Control test data and viewport, and wait for navigation, content, fonts, animations, and transient UI to settle. For intentionally variable regions, use a narrowly scoped ignore or mask feature if your tool supports it.
- Capture a named checkpoint. Use a name such as “Sign-in validation error” or “Order confirmation” so reviewers can connect a difference to the scenario state.
- Compare with a baseline. A visual test compares the current screenshot with a previously stored reference. Treat the baseline as the approved image for a defined app, environment, viewport, and state—not as a universal picture valid for every configuration.
- Review differences deliberately. Approve a changed image only when the UI change is intended. Reject an unintended difference and investigate the regression while keeping the previous baseline.
- Keep behavior assertions. Screenshots can reveal presentation changes that text or DOM checks may miss. Retain assertions for business rules and dynamic values whose exact content matters.
- Run it in the normal feedback loop. Run the visual check with the UI scenario locally or in CI, and make any failure traceable to its scenario and checkpoint name. The exact CI wiring depends on the runner and visual testing service.
Can I add screenshot testing to existing BDD tests?
Yes. Keep existing scenarios and step definitions intact, then integrate the visual check into the UI automation or test lifecycle at the point the target state is stable. The right place may be a step definition, shared hook, page-object layer, or framework fixture; choose the layer that can reliably access the rendered page without making the behavior specification unreadable.

Integration details are runner- and version-specific. Applitools’ Cucumber help article dated September 1, 2018 describes adding its Ruby gem and creating an Eyes instance in Cucumber’s env.rb support setup. That is an example of an architectural placement, not current setup instructions; check the vendor’s current documentation for the actual language, package, and versions in your suite.
Playwright example with Applitools Eyes
Applitools documents a Playwright integration using its extended test fixture. The fixture supplies page and eyes; the test captures a named checkpoint with eyes.check(). This is a Playwright-specific example, not a universal Cucumber API.

});The example uses the documented fixture import and checkpoint options. Adapt the URL, behavior, and name to your application, and verify the package’s present API for the version installed. The integration also documents configuration such as appName, whether visual differences fail the test, full-page capture, and ignored regions. Use ignored regions only for content that genuinely varies; masking too broadly can hide the very regression the check should detect.
Choose an approach and baseline policy
Framework-native screenshot assertions and managed visual testing services can both fit a BDD suite. Decide based on how your team wants to compare and review images, maintain baselines, and execute coverage; no single choice is established as best for every suite.

- Dynamic content: decide which values should be asserted functionally and which narrowly defined areas can be ignored or masked.

Troubleshooting visual checks
- The same test produces inconsistent differences: check that test data, viewport, page readiness, fonts, animations, and transient content are controlled before capture.
- A screenshot differs because of changing content: decide whether the changing value needs a functional assertion. If not, narrowly ignore or mask that region using the feature supported by your tool.
- An intentional UI change fails the check: review the difference and approve a new baseline only after confirming the change is expected.
- A regression is hidden: revisit masks and ignored regions; overly broad exclusions can conceal relevant changes.
- The integration example does not work in your BDD runner: the Eyes Playwright fixture is for Playwright’s documented integration, not every Cucumber or language stack. Verify current runner-specific packages, hooks, and APIs rather than copying an older setup unchanged.
- CI failures are hard to investigate: report the scenario and checkpoint name with the visual result so the failed state is identifiable.
