You can add videos to an OBS playlist without intentionally ending the YouTube broadcast, but OBS’s built-in VLC Video Source documentation does not guarantee that an edit will preserve the video currently playing. For in-place edits, the OBS Media Playlist Source plugin listing says it can update a playlist without restarting playback; treat that as the author’s feature claim, check compatibility, and test it before relying on it live.
First, separate playlist playback from the YouTube broadcast
There are two different kinds of continuity to watch: whether the video source keeps playing its current item, and whether YouTube remains connected to OBS’s outgoing live broadcast. A source reset does not by itself establish that the YouTube broadcast ended. OBS forum posts describe playback resets and inconsistent playlist updates, but they are anecdotal and do not confirm what happens to the broadcast connection.
For a public stream, test both outcomes with your own OBS version, source, and playlist workflow before editing a live playlist. OBS’s documentation describes playlist playback and settings, but does not promise that adding or reordering items during playback leaves the current video untouched.

Option 1: Use OBS’s built-in VLC Video Source
OBS distinguishes its Media Source from its VLC Video Source. The VLC Video Source supports a playlist and requires VLC to be installed. The OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation says it can hold “a playlist of items, similar to an Image Slideshow.” It documents playlist playback options, not a guarantee of safe in-place editing while the playlist is running.

Set up a VLC playlist
- Install VLC before configuring the source. Match its bitness to OBS: if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- In OBS, select the scene where the videos should appear. In the Sources panel, click + and choose VLC Video Source.
- Add the video files to the source’s playlist and arrange them in the desired order.
- Choose whether to loop or shuffle the playlist, and check the source’s visibility behavior. OBS’s Sources Guide explains that sources are managed in scenes and that visibility affects whether a source is shown.
- Start a private or otherwise low-risk test broadcast. While one file is playing, add or reorder an item using the same method you plan to use during the real stream. Observe source playback and YouTube connection separately.
What to expect when changing the list
OBS’s built-in documentation does not state that playlist edits are applied without restarting the current video. Community posts report playback resets and inconsistent playlist-file reloads, but they are user reports rather than controlled tests. Do not assume that adding a file will take effect immediately, or that a reset will disconnect YouTube.
Option 2: Consider the Media Playlist Source plugin for in-place edits
The OBS forum resource listing for CodeYan’s Media Playlist Source says it allows editing the playlist without restarting the video, including when files are reordered. This is the plugin author’s stated feature, not an independently verified guarantee for every setup.

The listing shows version 0.1.3, last updated 2025-04-13, and says versions from 0.1.0 require OBS 31 or later. Check the resource page for current compatibility and release information before installing. Then test additions, removals, and reordering in the way you intend to use them. Confirm both that the current video continues and that the YouTube broadcast stays connected.
Why replacing a playlist file midstream is uncertain
An OBS forum thread about updating a VLC playlist file reports that a saved replacement sometimes appeared in live playback and sometimes required restarting OBS or YouTube. Another participant suggested using two scenes but expressed uncertainty about whether that workaround would work. These reports do not establish a reliable update procedure.

If your workflow depends on changing the playlist file outside OBS, test it rather than assuming OBS will reload it at a safe point. Keep a copy of the working playlist and have a recovery plan in case playback resets or the new entries do not appear.
Test checklist before editing a public stream
- Confirm the exact OBS and VLC versions and that their 32-bit or 64-bit editions match.
- Test the specific operation you need: adding, removing, replacing, or reordering entries.
- Watch the current video source for a reset or interruption.
- Check YouTube separately to see whether the broadcast remains connected.
- Verify what happens when the source is hidden, and whether loop or shuffle settings affect your intended sequence.
- Do not rely on an untested playlist-file replacement or a suggested scene workaround during a high-stakes broadcast.
