How to Add Text-to-Speech in WordPress (Plugin Setup Guide)

The simplest way to add text-to-speech (TTS) to a WordPress site is to install a TTS plugin from Plugins → Add New, activate it, select the post types and player location in its settings, then test a live page on desktop and mobile. Plugins differ in whether speech is generated in the visitor’s browser or by a cloud service, so choose that model before configuring the player.

1. Install a WordPress text-to-speech plugin

1. Sign in to WordPress and open Plugins → Add New.
2. Search for text to speech. You can review the directory’s current options through the text-to-speech plugin tag.
3. Open the plugin page and check its current WordPress/PHP compatibility, update history, support activity, and documentation.
4. Click Install Now, then Activate.

2. Configure which content gets a player

After activation, open the plugin’s settings page and choose the content types it should process. Typical choices include posts, pages, or custom post types. Some plugins insert a player automatically for selected types; others require a block or shortcode.

• Enable only the post types where listening is useful.
• Choose whether the player appears before or after the article, or at another documented location.
• Save settings, clear any page or CDN cache, and view a published URL rather than only the editor preview.

3. Choose browser speech or cloud-generated audio

Browser-native speech

Cloud speech services

Other plugins send text to a remote provider that generates audio, and some store or cache the resulting files. This can provide a more controlled voice workflow, but may require provider credentials, a paid plan, usage limits, and a review of how article text is transmitted and retained.

The choice is not an independent quality ranking: it is a trade-off between visitor-device dependence, provider setup, voice control, recurring usage, and data handling.

4. Place the player manually when automatic insertion is unsuitable

If automatic placement conflicts with your theme, template, or custom post type, use the plugin’s documented block or shortcode. For example, AtlasVoice documents:

5. Compare the main plugin approaches

6. Test the finished player

1. Open a published post containing headings, lists, links, and any pronunciation-sensitive terms.
2. Start, pause, resume, and stop playback. Confirm that controls are visible and usable with a keyboard.
3. Repeat on a phone and a desktop browser. For browser-based speech, check more than one operating system if your audience is broad.
4. Check that caching, optimization, consent tools, and other plugins have not removed the player or blocked its scripts.
5. Test an article in each enabled post type and inspect the page after clearing site and browser caches.

Accessibility and privacy boundaries

A speech player is an additional way to access written content; installing one does not by itself make a site WCAG-conformant or satisfy a legal accessibility requirement. Keep the original text, headings, link names, focus order, contrast, and keyboard support usable without audio.

For cloud services, identify what text leaves your server, which provider receives it, where audio is stored, how long it is retained, and whether a separate account or API key is required. Check the plugin and provider documentation before enabling transmission of private or restricted content.

Troubleshooting common failures

No player appears

• Confirm the plugin is active and that the current post type is enabled.
• Check whether the theme template bypasses the automatic insertion hook; add the documented block or shortcode instead.
• Purge WordPress, CDN, and browser caches.

Playback works on one device but not another

This is expected more often with browser speech because voices come from the visitor’s browser and operating system. Try another installed voice or use a cloud-generated option when consistent audio is required.

Cloud audio fails to generate

• Recheck provider credentials, account status, quota, and billing.
• Verify that the selected language and voice are supported by the provider.
• Inspect the plugin’s error log and temporarily disable script-minification or security rules that may block its requests.
