Put the image and text in the same wrapper, set that wrapper to position: relative, then position the text with position: absolute. React renders the image and live text; ordinary CSS controls where the text appears.
Add live text over an image with JSX and CSS
This React DOM example places a caption at the lower edge of a responsive image. Replace the sample source and caption with your content.
function ImageWithText({ src, alt, children }) {
return (
<div className="image-overlay">
<img className="image-overlay__image" src={src} alt={alt} />
<div className="image-overlay__text">{children}</div>
</div>
);
}
.image-overlay {
position: relative;
width: 100%;
aspect-ratio: 16 / 9;
overflow: hidden;
}
.image-overlay__image {
display: block;
width: 100%;
height: 100%;
object-fit: cover;
}
.image-overlay__text {
position: absolute;
inset: auto 1rem 1rem;
color: white;
background: rgb(0 0 0 / 65%);
padding: 0.75rem 1rem;
}
The wrapper’s position: relative establishes the containing reference for the absolutely positioned text while keeping the wrapper in normal page flow. An absolutely positioned element is removed from normal flow and placed relative to its nearest positioned ancestor. If the intended wrapper is not positioned, the text may instead be placed relative to another ancestor.
Use React content, not text baked into pixels
Pass text as children, for example <ImageWithText src="/photo.jpg" alt="A hiker beside a lake">Trail conditions</ImageWithText>. This keeps the words as ordinary document text: they can be selected, styled, and resized independently of the image. React uses className for CSS classes. If a style depends on a JavaScript value, React also supports inline style objects.

Choose how the image fits its box
The example’s aspect-ratio: 16 / 9 is a design choice, not a React requirement. Pick a ratio that suits the content. Because the image is sized to the wrapper, object-fit determines how its intrinsic shape fills that box.
| Value | Result | Use when |
|---|---|---|
cover |
Fills the box without distorting the image; some edges may be cropped. | Filling the whole area matters more than showing every edge. |
contain |
Shows the full image without distortion, but may leave unfilled space. | The entire image must remain visible. |
fill (default) |
Can distort an image when the box and image have different aspect ratios. | Avoid for mismatched dimensions unless distortion is intended. |
object-fit affects an image after it has been resized. Keep the image and text in the same wrapper so they remain aligned as the wrapper changes size.

Make the overlay accessible and readable
Choose meaningful alternative text
Set alt to a concise description of meaningful image content; do not use “image” as the description or simply repeat the overlay caption. If the image is purely decorative and the overlay already provides the relevant information, use alt="" so assistive technology can skip it.
Keep the overlay as text and check contrast
Use an HTML text node for words that should remain readable and adaptable, rather than drawing them into an image or canvas. W3C guidance recommends using text wherever possible because image text scales less well and makes foreground and background changes harder. Check contrast where the text actually sits on the photo: WCAG 2.2 guidance sets a minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text, subject to the criterion’s exceptions. A translucent panel or gradient can improve legibility, but verify the result against the image behind it.

If the final result must be a single image or canvas with the words permanently embedded, it is no longer ordinary HTML text. Canvas has no alt attribute; for image-like canvas content that needs a description, MDN recommends role="img" with an aria-label.
Troubleshoot common overlay problems
- Text appears in the wrong place: Set
position: relativeon the wrapper that directly contains both the image and overlay. Check whether a different positioned ancestor is being used. - Text drifts when the image resizes: Keep both elements in the same wrapper and size the image to that wrapper. Apply
object-fitto the resized image. - The photo looks stretched: Avoid forcing unequal rendered width and height with the default
fill. Choosecoverto fill with cropping orcontainto preserve the full image. - Text is hard to read over part of the photo: Check contrast at the text’s actual location and add a backing panel or gradient if necessary.
- Screen readers announce the image awkwardly: Decide whether the image conveys information or is decorative; provide a useful
altdescription for the former and an emptyaltfor the latter.

It accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers.
