WordPress does not automatically highlight code that visitors paste into comments. To add highlighting, use a comment-focused plugin if it is actively maintained, or build a controlled Prism.js integration that outputs safely escaped <code> elements with the appropriate language class. General syntax-highlighting plugins for posts and Gutenberg Code blocks should not be assumed to support comments.
Choose the right implementation
First decide whether the code belongs to a visitor comment or to your own post content. Plugins that enhance the editor’s Code block generally affect posts and pages; they do not, based on their directory descriptions, process comment output. Comment highlighting must handle visitor-submitted content, WordPress sanitization, and comments loaded after the initial page render.

Option 1: evaluate a comment-focused plugin
The WordPress.org code-highlighting directory includes Code Snippets in Comments, whose description says it extends comments to display highlighted code. Treat that listing as a lead rather than a recommendation: the reported activity and tested-version metadata are weak evidence for compatibility with a current WordPress installation.
- Open the plugin’s current WordPress.org listing from the code-highlighting directory.
- Check the last update date, supported and tested WordPress versions, changelog, support threads, author details, and publicly available code.
- Review exactly how it accepts code in comments and whether it preserves your existing moderation, allowed HTML, and sanitization rules.
- Install it on a staging copy, not directly on the live site.
- Test an approved comment containing HTML, CSS, JavaScript, angle brackets, ampersands, long lines, and an intentionally rejected tag. Verify that ordinary comments still behave normally.
- Test moderation, logged-out submissions, threaded replies, pagination, and any AJAX comment loading your theme uses.
- Only deploy after confirming that the plugin receives security updates and does not weaken comment filtering.
Option 2: integrate Prism.js with controlled comment markup
Prism.js highlights code when the page contains the markup it expects. Its documented block pattern is:

Make the comment output safe first
Comments are untrusted visitor content. Do not allow a commenter to inject arbitrary script, event-handler attributes, or unrestricted markup merely to obtain highlighting. Keep WordPress’s normal comment moderation and sanitization behavior, and have the code that transforms an approved comment produce the expected elements only after filtering.

Escape code characters
Prism’s documentation requires literal < and & characters inside <code> elements to be escaped as < and &. Otherwise, the browser may interpret part of the example as HTML or an entity instead of displaying it as code. This escaping requirement applies to inline snippets and full blocks.
Load the languages and theme you actually use
Build or load Prism with only the language grammars and CSS theme needed by your site. A smaller selection reduces unnecessary page weight, but omitting a grammar means that class will not receive the expected language-specific highlighting. Select a neutral fallback for unclassified snippets rather than guessing a language.
Run highlighting at the right time
Initial page rendering is only one case. If comments are paginated, inserted by AJAX, or replaced by a reply form without a full page load, run Prism’s highlighting routine after the new comment nodes are added. Ensure the routine can run more than once without corrupting already-highlighted markup.

Define how commenters specify a language
A usable interface needs a documented convention, such as a permitted language marker or a comment form control. Do not ask visitors to submit arbitrary classes unless your sanitizer and renderer explicitly allow only a fixed list. If no language is supplied, render readable escaped code without forcing a potentially incorrect grammar.
Testing checklist before going live
- Verify ordinary prose, links, line breaks, threaded replies, and moderation notices.
- Submit literal HTML such as
<div>and ampersands and confirm they display as text. - Confirm scripts and event-handler attributes cannot execute.
- Check very long lines and mobile-width layouts for horizontal overflow.
- Test every language class you advertise, including an unknown or missing class.
- Repeat the tests for paginated and dynamically loaded comments.
- Confirm the page remains usable when the Prism stylesheet or script fails to load.
- Recheck the integration after WordPress, theme, plugin, or comment-form changes.
Common mistakes
Using a post-only highlighting plugin
A plugin that extends Gutenberg’s Code block or server-renders code in post content may never see the markup generated by comments. Its directory category and description are not proof of comment support.

Printing raw commenter input inside code tags
Wrapping unescaped input in <code> can turn angle brackets into elements and create a cross-site-scripting risk. Escape and sanitize before rendering.
Trusting old compatibility metadata
A listing tested with WordPress 5.4.23 does not establish compatibility with a current WordPress release. Check current maintenance and test on staging.

Highlighting only the first page
Comments loaded later need the same highlighting trigger. Otherwise, visitors see colored code on one page and plain code after navigation or an AJAX update.
Which approach should you use?
Choose a maintained comment-specific plugin when it passes current security and compatibility checks and you want the smallest implementation effort. Choose Prism.js when you need a controlled language list, custom rendering, or behavior integrated with an existing front-end system and can maintain the sanitization and dynamic-rendering code. If neither option can preserve your site’s comment safety rules, leave comments as escaped plain text rather than weakening those rules for visual formatting.
