There is no general wkhtmltopdf switch that enables every kind of SVG artwork. The documented SVG options target checkbox and radiobutton controls. For logos, diagrams, icons, and other page graphics, reliable results depend on your wkhtmltopdf version and Qt build, how the SVG is included, and which SVG features it uses. Start with a minimal reproduction, test the generated PDF itself, and use a dedicated SVG converter when fidelity or true vector output is required.
What wkhtmltopdf actually supports
wkhtmltopdf converts HTML pages to PDF with a Qt-based rendering engine. Its documented SVG-specific options are narrowly scoped:
--checkbox-checked-svg <path>--checkbox-svg <path>--radiobutton-checked-svg <path>--radiobutton-svg <path>
Those options provide artwork for checked and unchecked form controls. They are not a promise that arbitrary SVG elements, external SVG files, embedded raster images, filters, clipping paths, or opacity will render correctly. In other words, you do not “turn on SVG support” with one flag. You make the SVG and the renderer’s behavior compatible, then verify the resulting PDF.
First, identify the renderer you are testing
Two installations with the same nominal wkhtmltopdf version can behave differently when they were packaged with different Qt builds. Record the complete version string before changing your HTML:

wkhtmltopdf --version
Save the output in your build logs. Note whether it says that Qt is patched. Historical issue reports describe differences between distribution builds without patched Qt and patched-Qt builds, including problems involving clip-path and opacity. These reports describe particular environments, not a universal rule, so use them as a reason to test your own binary rather than as a guaranteed diagnosis.
Build a minimal SVG test page
Reduce the problem to one HTML file and one SVG. Remove JavaScript frameworks, web fonts, unrelated CSS, and other images until you can identify the first feature that fails.
Inline SVG
<!doctype html>
<html>
<head>
<meta charset="utf-8">
<style>
body { margin: 32px; font-family: sans-serif; }
svg { width: 320px; height: 180px; }
</style>
</head>
<body>
<h1>SVG test</h1>
<svg viewBox="0 0 320 180" role="img" aria-label="Test graphic"
xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg">
<rect width="320" height="180" fill="#17324d"/>
<circle cx="90" cy="90" r="48" fill="#3ddc97"/>
<text x="160" y="100" fill="white" font-size="24">wkhtmltopdf</text>
</svg>
</body>
</html>
External SVG with an image element
Save the artwork as mark.svg and reference it with a normal image element:
<img src="mark.svg" width="320" height="180" alt="Test graphic">
Then generate the PDF:
wkhtmltopdf test.html test.pdf
Test inline SVG and the external <img> form separately. Do not assume that an <object> behaves like either one. A reported 2017 failure produced a blank result for an SVG included with <object>, while the reporter saw a different result with an Angular include. That is a failure mode to investigate, not a universal workaround.
Check the SVG features most likely to expose differences
Embedded raster images
If the SVG contains a JPEG or PNG through an embedded data URL or another image reference, test a version with that image removed. A report involving wkhtmltopdf 0.12.3 with patched Qt described embedded JPEG content not appearing when the containing SVG was loaded as an image. Placing SVG markup directly in the HTML produced a different, still imperfect result. Keep the raster asset separate during diagnosis so you can tell whether the problem is SVG geometry or image decoding.

Clipping paths and opacity
Temporarily replace clipPath, masks, group opacity, and element opacity with simple fills. A 2020 report associated missing or incorrect results with clip-path and opacity in specific builds. If the simplified file works, add those features back one at a time or flatten them in your design/export tool.
External resources and fonts
Make the test self-contained where possible. Package fonts, images, and stylesheets locally and use paths that the conversion process can read. A browser displaying the page successfully does not prove that the wkhtmltopdf process can fetch every resource under its own file, network, and security settings.

Intrinsic size and viewBox
Give the SVG a clear viewBox and explicit dimensions in the HTML or CSS. This removes ambiguity about the drawing’s viewport and makes it easier to distinguish a sizing problem from a rendering problem.
Determine whether the PDF still contains vector artwork
A sharp-looking PDF is not necessarily a vector PDF. A 2018 issue report for wkhtmltopdf 0.12.5 with patched Qt said SVG artwork was rasterized in the output. If scalable vectors are a requirement, inspect the actual PDF:
- Open the PDF at very high zoom and look for pixelation on curves and text.
- Compare the SVG at the same physical size with the PDF export.
- Use a PDF inspection or preflight tool in your own pipeline to determine whether the page contains image objects instead of vector paths.
- Repeat the test after changing the wkhtmltopdf build; do not infer vector preservation from the HTML source alone.
If the output is rasterized, wkhtmltopdf may still be acceptable for ordinary documents, but it does not satisfy a requirement for indefinitely scalable artwork. Choose a converter that creates the required output format instead.

Use the documented control flags only for form controls
When your goal is to customize checkbox or radiobutton artwork, the documented options are appropriate. For example:
Recommended Free Tools
wkhtmltopdf
--checkbox-checked-svg checked.svg
--checkbox-svg unchecked.svg
--radiobutton-checked-svg radio-checked.svg
--radiobutton-svg radio-unchecked.svg
form.html form.pdf
These flags do not repair a blank logo, diagram, or inline illustration elsewhere on the page. Treat general SVG rendering as a compatibility problem, not as a missing checkbox option.
Convert the SVG before assembling the document
When wkhtmltopdf cannot render the source reliably, convert the artwork separately and insert the resulting PDF or PNG into the workflow that matches your quality requirement.
librsvg and rsvg-convert
GNOME’s librsvg tooling includes rsvg-convert, which can write PDF output and accept page-sizing controls. A typical conversion is:
rsvg-convert -f pdf -o logo.pdf logo.svg
For a raster fallback:
rsvg-convert -f png -o logo.png logo.svg
Use the PDF path when your downstream document system can place PDF pages or vector artwork. Use PNG when the HTML renderer only accepts images or when you have intentionally chosen a fixed resolution. Verify page dimensions and scaling for your document; the converter’s sizing options determine the physical output.

CairoSVG
CairoSVG is an SVG 1.1 converter that can produce PDF and PNG. Install it in an isolated Python environment, then run:
python -m pip install cairosvg
python -m cairosvg logo.svg -o logo.pdf
python -m cairosvg logo.svg -o logo.png
CairoSVG documents limitations for some SVG features. Check its supported-feature documentation against your artwork, especially if it uses filters, advanced text behavior, masks, or embedded content. A successful command only proves that the file was accepted; inspect the visual and geometric result.
Choosing PDF or PNG
| Requirement | Preferred intermediate | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Artwork must remain scalable | PDF from a dedicated SVG converter | Placement in an HTML-to-PDF pipeline can require a separate composition step. |
| Existing HTML accepts only image elements | PNG | Resolution is finite; choose dimensions for the largest intended display size. |
| SVG uses features unsupported by the converter | Simplified SVG or a different renderer | Flattening effects can change appearance and requires visual review. |
A production troubleshooting sequence
- Capture the environment. Save
wkhtmltopdf --version, operating-system details, package source, and whether patched Qt is reported. - Reduce the input. Use one HTML file, one SVG, and no framework-generated markup.
- Compare inclusion methods. Test inline SVG and
<img src="...">; test<object>only if your application requires it. - Remove complex features. Strip embedded images, clipping paths, masks, opacity, filters, and external fonts, then restore them individually.
- Check resource access. Confirm that every local file and network resource is readable by the conversion process and that URLs are stable at conversion time.
- Inspect the PDF. Look for blank regions, missing layers, incorrect transparency, and rasterization at high zoom.
- Try a dedicated converter. Compare librsvg or CairoSVG output with the original SVG and document which features differ.
- Choose a maintainable architecture. Keep conversion as a separate, testable step if wkhtmltopdf remains necessary for the rest of the HTML.
Common symptoms, causes, and fixes
| Symptom | Likely investigation | Practical fix |
|---|---|---|
| SVG area is blank | Inclusion mode, inaccessible resource, or unsupported feature | Try inline SVG and <img>, then reduce the file to basic paths and fills. |
| Only an embedded JPEG/PNG is missing | Raster content inside the SVG | Test the image separately; convert the SVG with librsvg or CairoSVG, or place the raster image directly. |
| Clipped artwork disappears | Build-specific clip-path behavior |
Flatten the clipping operation or switch renderer after testing the exact build. |
| Transparency looks wrong | Opacity or compositing differences | Replace opacity with pre-composited colors where possible, then compare converter output. |
| Artwork looks sharp at normal zoom but pixelates when enlarged | SVG was rasterized in the PDF | Use a vector-preserving conversion path and verify the PDF objects. |
| Works on one machine but not another | Different wkhtmltopdf/Qt package | Pin and record the tested binary, or move SVG conversion to a dedicated controlled step. |
Maintenance and long-term risk
The upstream wkhtmltopdf repository was archived on January 2, 2023. That is the repository’s stated status; it does not by itself establish whether a distributor or fork is maintained. For a new system, isolate wkhtmltopdf behind a service or command wrapper, pin the binary, keep representative SVG fixtures, and run PDF visual checks whenever the operating system, package, or artwork changes. If SVG fidelity is central to the product, evaluate a renderer with an active maintenance path rather than building a permanent dependency on undocumented behavior.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I fix every SVG by adding a wkhtmltopdf command-line flag?
No. The documented SVG flags are for checkbox and radiobutton artwork. General SVG compatibility must be tested against the specific build, inclusion method, and SVG features.
Is inline SVG always better than an external SVG file?
No. Inclusion methods can behave differently between builds. Test inline markup and an image element with your exact wkhtmltopdf binary.
How do I prove that my PDF contains vectors?
Inspect the PDF at high zoom and use a PDF preflight or object-inspection tool. Visual sharpness at ordinary zoom is not proof of vector preservation.
Should I replace wkhtmltopdf because its repository is archived?
Archival status is a maintenance risk, not an automatic requirement to migrate. Pin your tested build, isolate the renderer, and evaluate a different converter when SVG fidelity or long-term maintenance is critical.
