To add a subtitle in WordPress, choose whether it should be part of the page content or stored separately. For a simple heading beneath the title, add a Heading block. For a reusable subtitle field, use the page excerpt if your theme displays it, or install a subtitle plugin and confirm how your theme will render its value.
Choose how the subtitle should work
A subtitle can be an ordinary heading in the article, or separate post metadata that a theme places near the title. The first option is easiest; the second is useful when editors need a distinct field or the design positions subtitles outside the main content.
- Content heading: Use when the text belongs in the reading flow and does not need its own field.
- Excerpt: Use when the theme or template already displays page excerpts in the desired location.
- Dedicated subtitle field: Use when editors need separate metadata, and check whether the theme needs additional integration to display it.
Add a subtitle with a Heading block
- Open the post or page in the WordPress editor.
- Insert a Heading block where the subtitle should appear, commonly immediately after the title or introductory content.
- Enter the subtitle and choose a heading level that fits the document structure.
WordPress explains that a page title is usually the H1, with subsequent Heading blocks typically used for H2, H3, and lower levels. Choose the level for its structural meaning, not just its appearance. See WordPress’s Heading block documentation.
This method places the subtitle in the content itself. It may not position it outside the content area or give it a separate field in the editor.

Use the page Excerpt field
- In the editor, open the three-dot menu and choose Preferences.
- Under Document Settings, enable Excerpt.
- Enter the subtitle in the Excerpt field.
- Preview the page and confirm that its theme or template displays the excerpt beneath the title where you want it.
This approach is described in a WordPress.org support reply, but it does not guarantee that every theme displays page excerpts as subtitles. If the excerpt is not visible in the right location, use a content heading or a dedicated-field option instead. See the WordPress.org support discussion.
Add a dedicated subtitle field with a plugin
A subtitle plugin can add a distinct field to the editing interface. Before choosing one, check the current plugin documentation for the editor experience and the available display method; a field alone does not ensure that the active theme outputs its contents beneath the title.

Plugin features and compatibility can change. Review the live listing and current documentation before installing, especially if you rely on a custom post type, API, or particular display method. A plugin that stores a subtitle separately may still require a shortcode, block, or theme-template change to show it on the front end.

Pick the option that matches your site
- Choose a Heading block when the subtitle is simply part of the article and can appear in the content flow.
- Choose the Excerpt field when your active theme already renders page excerpts in the location you need.
- Choose a dedicated plugin field when editors need separate subtitle metadata; confirm whether its block, shortcode, API, or template integration fits your setup.
