The steps depend on what you mean by “Astra.” Astra for Fire TV is a Jellyfin playback app: it can display supported subtitle tracks while someone watches a video, but its help does not describe adding captions to a separate live broadcast. Cesbo Astra manages broadcast streams, but its documentation does not establish a workflow for authoring new subtitle cues. If you mean a prerecorded video streamed as live, prepare and verify the captions in the video or broadcast workflow itself; do not assume captions added in YouTube Studio will carry over to a separate live stream.
First identify which Astra workflow you mean
“Astra” can refer to products with different jobs. Astra’s Fire TV help covers playback of a Jellyfin library video on Vega OS 1.2 or later, and identifies help for Astra version 1.4.0. Cesbo Astra’s stream overview covers configuring and processing streams. Neither source documents an end-to-end process for creating timed captions for a prerecorded program and delivering them in a live broadcast.
- If viewers select subtitles while watching a library video in Astra for Fire TV: use the playback steps below.
- If you are sending a prerecorded program as a live broadcast through Cesbo Astra or another encoder: make or obtain a timed caption track, then confirm that your ingest, encoder, output protocol, and viewers’ players all support carrying that track. Cesbo’s cited overview is not a caption-authoring guide.
For Astra on Fire TV: show an existing Jellyfin subtitle track
This is subtitle playback, not caption creation for a live broadcast. The source video must already have a subtitle track available through Jellyfin.

- In Jellyfin, confirm that the video has the subtitle track you want to use.
- In Astra, open Settings > Playback and check that Subtitle mode is not set to turn all subtitles off. You can also set a preferred subtitle language there.
- Start the video and choose the desired subtitle track in the player.
- Check the player’s Instant/Reloads marker for the track before selecting it. A track that requires a reload can rebuild the stream; switching between supported text tracks is instant.
Astra 1.4.0’s help says the app renders ordinary text subtitles itself, including SRT, WebVTT, and text subtitles stored in MP4 files. It does not render PGS, VOBSUB, or heavily styled ASS/SSA on the device; those need to be burned into the video image by the server. Burn-in makes the text part of the picture rather than a selectable track.

For a prerecorded video broadcast as live: prepare captions separately
A timed caption file pairs text with display timestamps. Before broadcasting, verify the caption track against the final video version: edits, trims, different frame rates, or a changed program duration can shift synchronization. Also confirm the delivery requirements with the platform and encoder you actually use: accepted caption format and container, whether the output preserves a selectable text track, and how the audience player handles it. The available Cesbo Astra overview does not specify these caption settings, so there is no supported Astra-specific setting sequence to copy from it.
Choose selectable captions or burned-in subtitles
- Selectable text track: viewers can generally choose whether to show captions and, where available, select a language. This works only if the entire delivery path preserves and supports the track.
- Burned-in text: captions become part of the video image and are visible wherever that image is shown, but viewers cannot switch them off or select a different caption track. The source needs to be processed to place text in the image.
Check styling and placement as well as timing, especially for languages that use non-Latin scripts. Do not assume that a caption file or track accepted by one playback app will be preserved by a separate live-stream encoder.

Use YouTube Studio captions only for the uploaded-video workflow
YouTube’s instructions for captions attached to an uploaded video are: open YouTube Studio, choose Subtitles, select the video, add a language, then choose Add to upload a subtitle file, auto-sync a transcript, or type captions manually. See YouTube Help: Add subtitles & captions. This documents captions for that uploaded video; it does not establish that the same captions will accompany the media when it is separately routed through a live broadcast.
Allow time for caption preparation
ASTRA’s submission to the Australian Communications and Media Authority says caption creation generally takes approximately three times the program duration, with transfer and internal preparation potentially adding more time. Treat that as a statement in that submission, not a guaranteed turnaround for every program or provider. The submission’s publication date is not established here.

Troubleshooting subtitle problems in Astra playback
- No subtitle option appears: confirm the track is present in Jellyfin for that file, and check that Subtitle mode is not set to all subtitles off.
- The wrong language appears: choose the intended track in the player or change the preferred subtitle language in Playback settings.
- A track forces a reload: check its Instant/Reloads marker. Reload-required playback is different from instant track switching.
- A PGS, VOBSUB, or heavily styled ASS/SSA track does not render: Astra’s help says these are not rendered by the device; have the server burn the subtitles into the image if that is acceptable for your use.
- Captions appear in the uploaded YouTube video but not the separate live output: Studio’s uploaded-video caption workflow does not prove live-output pass-through. Check the live encoder’s input and output caption support and test the actual audience playback path.
- Broadcast captions drift out of sync: compare the caption timestamps with the final broadcast file, and re-time the captions after any edit or duration change.
