For a 24/7 prerecorded children’s story stream on YouTube, prepare captions against the final audio and video, then choose either always-visible open captions rendered into the video or a viewer-selectable closed-caption track delivered through a compatible encoder or caption service. YouTube’s automatic live captions are not a dependable substitute for a prepared, all-day workflow: they are English-only, availability-limited, enabled per stream, and do not remain on the ended livestream recording. YouTube’s live caption requirements describe the supported delivery paths.

Choose between open and closed captions

Open captions are burned into the picture and remain visible to every viewer. Closed captions are delivered as a separate track that viewers can turn on or off where the player supports it. The choice is a trade-off between consistent display and viewer control.

Method What viewers see What the setup requires Best fit
Open captions rendered into the video Text is always visible and cannot be switched off. A captioned video prepared and checked before streaming. A fixed prerecorded story loop where simple, dependable display matters most.
Embedded EIA-608/CEA-708 captions A selectable caption track, where supported by the player. A compatible encoder sending captions in the required format, with embedded captions enabled in YouTube Live. A workflow that needs viewer-selectable captions and has compatible encoding equipment.
Supported HTTP caption feed A selectable live caption track, where supported by the player. Compatible caption software or provider, YouTube’s signed ingestion URL, and the documented broadcast delay setting. A workflow using a separate caption system to deliver captions to YouTube.

For a fixed prerecorded loop, open captions are often the straightforward option because the captions travel with the video. Choose a closed-caption workflow if viewers need the ability to toggle captions, but verify the entire caption delivery chain with the actual encoder and provider before relying on it unattended.

W3C distinguishes always-visible open captions from captions viewers can show or hide. Its open-caption guidance explains the former; the WCAG live captions explanation covers synchronized captions for live audio.

Prepare accurate captions for the story

  1. Finalize the footage and audio first. Make captions from the exact version you will stream, not an earlier narration draft. Edits to dialogue, pauses, or sound cues can change caption timing.
  2. Transcribe and time the narration. Align each line with the spoken words. Check character names, unusual pronunciations, and any repeated phrases against the recording.
  3. Include meaningful non-speech audio. Captions can convey who is speaking and significant sounds as well as dialogue. For a story, consider cues such as a bell, a knock, or music that matters to the plot. W3C’s live synchronized media technique describes creating captions synchronized with media.
  4. Make open captions legible on small screens. Use strong contrast, readable text, and placement that does not cover faces or important story details. Review the finished video on a phone-sized display as well as a larger screen.
  5. Check synchronization after export. Watch the encoded file, including transitions and quiet sections. If using open captions, confirm they are present in the final picture; if using a separate track, confirm the track aligns with the final audio.

W3C’s WCAG Success Criterion 1.2.4 states, “Captions are provided for all live audio content in synchronized media.” Whether a particular creator has a legal duty to caption depends on jurisdiction and circumstances. The U.S. Department of Justice’s 2024 discussion concerns covered public entities and does not determine whether an unspecified creator or stream is covered; see the April 24, 2024 Federal Register rulemaking.

Set up closed captions in YouTube Live

Use embedded EIA-608/CEA-708 captions

  1. In YouTube Live, create or open the stream and go to its setup or settings.
  2. Enable closed captions, choose Embedded 608/708, and save the setting.
  3. Configure the encoder to send EIA-608 or CEA-708 captions that match the caption data prepared for the story.
  4. Test the live player and confirm viewers can select the track and that its timing stays aligned through playback and a loop restart.

YouTube says the 608/708 standard supports up to four language tracks, but YouTube currently supports one caption track in this embedded workflow. Confirm the current setup screen and encoder instructions before launch, since platform interfaces and integrations can change. See YouTube’s live caption requirements.

Use a supported HTTP caption feed

  1. Enable captions in the YouTube Live setup for the stream and obtain its caption ingestion URL.
  2. Give that signed HTTP URL to compatible caption software or a provider configured to send the prepared captions.
  3. In the advanced settings, set the documented broadcast delay to 30 or 60 seconds as required by the workflow.
  4. Confirm captions appear at the right time in the live player and remain available after a story change and loop restart.

A stream entry point has one caption feed. YouTube lists Total Eclipse, Case CATalyst, CaptionMaker, and StreamText.Net as supported software or options; that listing is not an endorsement or a service-level guarantee. It does not establish that any one provider can maintain synchronization or reconnect through unattended, round-the-clock playback.

What YouTube automatic live captions can and cannot do

YouTube describes automatic live captions as English-only and says the feature is being rolled out to eligible English channels streaming at normal latency when professional captions are unavailable. It must be enabled for individual live streams, not once for an entire channel. Automatic captions do not remain on the video after the livestream ends. Check whether the option is available in the account and stream setup rather than assuming it will be available for every broadcast. Details are in YouTube’s automatic captioning help.

Recognition can fail or degrade with poor sound, unsupported language, overlapping speakers, and other processing issues. For prerecorded stories, correcting the source audio and verifying the transcript against the final recording are more relevant than buying live audio equipment. Automatic captions may help with eligible live English speech, but they should not be treated as a prepared caption track for a continuous story loop.

Test the full 24/7 loop before relying on it

A caption workflow that works for one story is not necessarily reliable through a long unattended stream. Test with the actual encoder, caption feed, video playlist, and YouTube stream configuration.

Troubleshoot common caption problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
Captions are unavailable in the player. Closed captions may not be enabled for this stream, the embedded format may not match the encoder output, or the HTTP feed may not be reaching YouTube. Recheck the stream’s caption setting, encoder configuration or signed ingestion URL, and whether the feed is active.
Captions appear late or drift out of sync. The caption timing may not match the final encode, or the caption-feed delay may be misconfigured. Compare against the final audio and confirm the 30- or 60-second delay setting for an HTTP feed.
Automatic captions are missing or inaccurate. The stream may not meet availability conditions, or sound quality, language, overlapping voices, or processing may interfere. Check feature availability and language; improve the source audio and use a prepared caption workflow when accuracy matters.
Captions stop after a restart or story change. The caption feed or encoder may not have reconnected, or the new story may not have matching caption data. Test reconnection and transitions with the specific provider and ensure each story’s captions match its final audio.
Open captions are hard to read or cover the story. Text size, contrast, or placement may not suit smaller screens or the footage. Review the exported video on a phone-sized display and adjust readability and safe placement before streaming.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your prerecorded story stream is on YouTube, StreamNeo can keep the uploaded video or playlist running from the cloud. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The computer at home does not have to stay on. StreamNeo streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
