To add subtitles in VLC, open your video, choose Subtitle > Add Subtitle File (wording may vary), and select the subtitle file. If subtitles are already included in the video, choose the track you want from the Subtitle menu instead. You can also correct timing, encoding, and text appearance in VLC’s settings.
Choose between an external subtitle file and an embedded track
An external subtitle is a separate file you load into VLC. An embedded subtitle track is stored inside the media file, so you select it rather than browse for another file. VLC’s Desktop User Documentation 3.0 describes both approaches and notes that track descriptions, such as language, may be available.

VLC’s documentation says some DVD, SVCD, OGM, and Matroska (MKV) media can include embedded subtitles. The right choice depends on what your video contains and whether you have a compatible external file.

Add a separate subtitle file
- Open the video in VLC.
- Open the Subtitle menu and choose the command to add a subtitle file. VLC’s menu documentation lists adding a subtitle file as a Subtitle-menu function; the exact visible label can vary by version, operating system, or interface language. See VLC’s menu overview.
- Browse to the subtitle file, select it, and open it. VLC should display the subtitles during playback.
In VLC Desktop User Documentation 3.0, another option is to use Open Multiple Files and enable the option to use a subtitle file. The documentation also describes a separate Video > Subtitle Track route. Menu labels may differ in other builds.

Formats VLC documents
VLC Desktop User Documentation 3.0 lists support for .cdg, .idx, .srt, .sub, .utf, .ass, .ssa, .aqt, .jss, .psb, .rt, and .smi. This is a documented list, not a guarantee that every file variant or malformed file will display correctly. The guide also names MicroDVD, SubRIP, SubViewer, SSA, Sami, and VobSub among formats VLC can handle.
Load VobSub subtitles correctly
VobSub subtitles use image-based data. When selecting a VobSub subtitle, choose the .idx file rather than the .sub file, as VLC’s subtitle guide instructs.
Select a subtitle track already in the video
- Start playback and open the Subtitle menu.
- Open the subtitle-track list and select the track you want. VLC’s menu overview describes this as selecting a subtitle track.
- If track descriptions are shown, use them to identify the language or other available details.
If no text appears, check that the intended track is selected and enabled. A video may have several tracks, or none; an external subtitle file must be loaded separately.

First identify the direction of the mismatch: if a line appears after its speech, adjust the subtitles earlier; if it appears before the speech, adjust them later. Make a small adjustment, replay a spoken line, and repeat until the text matches.

Adjust in small increments with a shortcut
VideoLAN’s Windows FAQ says, “During playback you can press h or g to adjust subtitle delay (adjust step is 50 ms).” This shortcut guidance is Windows-specific, not a guarantee for every operating system or customized keyboard layout. If the keys do not work, check the active hotkey settings or use the synchronization controls. See the VLC Windows FAQ.
Enter a numerical delay
VLC Desktop User Documentation 3.0 documents a numerical adjustment at Tools > Track Synchronization > Synchronization. Use the subtitle-delay control there to enter a value directly. The keyboard approach supports incremental changes; the numerical control lets you specify a delay value. Labels and locations may differ in another version or platform. Fix missing, partial, or garbled characters
If VLC opens a subtitle file but shows incorrect characters or only part of its text, the encoding may not match the file. VideoLAN’s FAQ recommends changing the subtitle text encoding in preferences. Its Windows FAQ gives the path Tools > Preferences > Subtitles/OSD; the general FAQ describes the setting under input/codecs subtitle settings. The precise path can vary by version. Consult the VLC FAQs for the relevant guidance.
If subtitles are entirely absent, verify that you loaded the external file or selected the intended embedded track. When a video contains multiple tracks, select the desired language if VLC provides that description.

Change subtitle appearance
For text-based subtitles, VLC’s Windows FAQ says you can change font, size, style, and color under Tools > Preferences > Subtitles/OSD. These controls apply to text subtitles, not image-based subtitles. DVD and SVCD subtitles, for example, are images, so they cannot be restyled like rendered text.
