You can add two different kinds of monetization to a YouTube livestream: ads served by YouTube, which you enable in YouTube Studio if your channel is eligible, and sponsor messages that you arrange with a brand and disclose to viewers. YouTube-served ad settings do not book or insert a sponsor’s message for you.
Turn on ads served by YouTube
To earn Watch Page ad and YouTube Premium revenue from a livestream, your channel must be eligible for monetization and accept YouTube’s Watch Page Monetization Module. Check YouTube Studio > Earn to see which modules are available to your account. Eligibility and available features vary by channel, so do not assume that every channel can turn on live ads.
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go live.
- Start a stream from the Stream tab, or schedule one from Manage.
- In Live Control Room, select Edit > Monetization.
- Set monetization to On, then choose how to handle mid-roll ads.
When live monetization is on, pre-roll and display ads are enabled automatically. Mid-roll settings control opportunities for ads during the stream; they do not guarantee that every viewer will receive one. Viewers who are not served an ad can keep watching, while viewers who receive one rejoin after it ends or is skipped. Ads are turned off for an embedded livestream when autoplay is enabled on the external site.

Choose how to run mid-roll ads

Even when a break is scheduled or inserted, YouTube decides whether an ad is served to a particular viewer. A manual break still displays while the automatic-break delay feature is on.

Monetized channels without rights management can set channel-level defaults for future livestreams. YouTube’s help guidance says those defaults are not currently available to channels with rights management.
Add a sponsor segment and disclose it
A sponsor segment is a message or endorsement arranged between you and a brand. You and the sponsor should agree on what you will say, any claims you can substantiate, when the segment will run, and any other deliverables. This is a separate commercial arrangement from YouTube’s ad inventory; YouTube’s ad controls do not arrange sponsor bookings or payments.

- In YouTube’s content settings, identify the video or livestream as containing paid promotion, such as product placement, sponsorship, or endorsement. YouTube’s branded-content policy applies to live streams.
- Say the disclosure clearly in the livestream itself. For example: “This segment is sponsored by [Brand].”
- Repeat the disclosure periodically so people who join after the stream starts hear it too. Do not rely only on the description or YouTube’s paid-promotion label.
- Describe the relationship accurately. If you received a product for free, for example, say so; do not imply you personally tried a product if you have not.
In the United States, FTC guidance treats financial connections and things of value—including free or discounted products and perks—as material relationships that may need disclosure. Its 2019 staff guidance says: “If making an endorsement in a live stream, the disclosure should be repeated periodically so viewers who only see part of the stream will get the disclosure.” FTC guidance also warns that a disclosure obscured by YouTube ads is not clear and conspicuous; keeping a clear disclosure visible throughout the stream is a safer approach. These are U.S. federal guidelines, not universal legal advice; requirements can differ elsewhere.

The paid-promotion setting is a platform disclosure aid, not a substitute for a disclosure viewers can notice and understand.

Optional controls and other earning features
YouTube documents an Elgato Stream Deck plugin as an optional way to insert ads. It is not required: the basic setup and live controls are available in Studio. YouTube also lists Super Chat, Super Stickers, and channel memberships as livestream earning options, subject to channel eligibility. These features are separate from ad monetization and sponsor arrangements.
