The clearest budget-oriented way to add rear surrounds to a Sonos Beam is to use two matching IKEA SYMFONISK Bookshelf WiFi speakers. Sonos lists Bookshelf Gen 1 and Gen 2 as compatible surrounds for Beam (Gen 2), and IKEA describes using a pair with Beam as rear speakers. Buy a pair—not one speaker—and check compatibility for your exact Beam and SYMFONISK models before purchasing.
Choose a compatible pair, not a single speaker
Sonos surround sound requires two compatible speakers. The most clearly supported budget-oriented choice here is a matched pair of SYMFONISK Bookshelf speakers: Sonos lists Bookshelf Gen 1 and Gen 2 for Beam (Gen 2), and IKEA explains how to use two bookshelf speakers as Beam rear surrounds.

Do not mix a Bookshelf speaker with a different SYMFONISK type, such as a table lamp, for this pair. Sonos generally requires surrounds to be the same model. It identifies One and One SL as an exception that can be paired; a One and Play:1 combination is not supported. Check your Beam and app before buying
Compatibility can depend on the Beam generation and the exact speaker model. The Sonos compatibility page lists supported surrounds for Beam (Gen 2), including SYMFONISK Bookshelf Gen 1 and Gen 2; check the entry for your particular product before ordering. Beam (Gen 2) requires the current Sonos app and is not supported by the S1 app. See Sonos’ compatibility and app guidance.
Sonos surrounds connect wirelessly to the home-theater product. That avoids running speaker cable from the Beam, but each surround still needs power and a suitable place in the room.

Set up the speakers as Beam surrounds
- Add the Beam and both speakers to Sonos. Use the Sonos app to set up the Beam and each SYMFONISK speaker. IKEA’s SYMFONISK setup instructions cover Bookshelf Gen 1 and Gen 2.
- Confirm they appear as separate rooms. In the Sonos app, open Settings and check that each speaker is listed separately before assigning them to the Beam room.
- Separate an existing stereo pair if needed. If the two speakers are currently configured as a stereo pair, separate them first. Sonos provides the relevant steps in its surround setup instructions.
- Run the surround setup flow. In Settings, select the Beam room, choose “Set up Surrounds,” and follow the prompts in the app.
- Place and orient the pair. Put one speaker behind and to the left of your usual listening position and the other behind and to the right. Keep both in the same room, in the same orientation, and with line of sight to the home-theater speaker.
Know what changes when they are surrounds
Once assigned to a Sonos home theater, the pair serves as surrounds rather than as independent playback speakers. Sonos states that surround mode disables AirPlay, Bluetooth playback, line-in, and subwoofer output on the surrounds. Check the feature limitations if any of those functions matter to how you use the speakers.
