To show the song currently playing on a 24/7 YouTube music stream, add a now-playing graphic as an overlay in your streaming setup. The overlay needs a reliable source for track names: for a fixed sequence, that might be YouTube chapters or a maintained playlist; for tracks selected dynamically, it must receive current-track information from the player or a compatible integration. YouTube’s live broadcast title and description identify the event, not each changing song.

Choose how the overlay will get song names

A now-playing overlay is a graphic layered over the video. In OBS, a browser-source style overlay can display text supplied by a supported metadata source. An OBS forum resource describes an overlay workflow supporting YouTube and YouTube Music, with YouTube chapters or a playlist in the video description as possible title inputs: OBS forum: Music on stream. That is an example workflow, not a guarantee that every player, playlist format, encoder, or continuous broadcast will stay synchronized.

Title source Best fit What to verify
Chapters or a prepared playlist A fixed sequence whose order and song names are known. Keep the title list synchronized with the actual playback, including edits, skipped tracks, and transitions.
Player-driven metadata A player that exposes the current track to an integration the overlay supports. Confirm compatibility with your exact player and playback setup; the cited resource does not establish universal support.
YouTube live title and description The overall event name and details. These are broadcast-level fields, not a documented changing per-song label.

Pick the source based on how the stream actually selects and plays music. If an operator changes tracks or the playlist can skip items, a static sequence can quickly become inaccurate. If playback is automated, verify that the player’s current-track information reaches the overlay rather than assuming YouTube will identify songs for it.

Set up and test a now-playing overlay

  1. Prepare an accurate title source. For a fixed sequence, assemble song names in playback order and use the chapter or playlist method supported by your overlay. For dynamic playback, identify the player’s current-track metadata and check that the overlay’s integration supports it.
  2. Add the overlay to the stream scene. In OBS, add the overlay using the method specified by its provider—often a browser source—and position it where it will not obscure essential video content. Follow the provider’s current setup instructions; the available resource does not establish one universal configuration for every setup.
  3. Check the display during playback. Confirm the song title is readable at the size viewers will see, that special characters and spelling render correctly, and that the displayed name changes at the right time.
  4. Run a private or unlisted test before relying on it. Watch through several track changes, including any transition or playlist behavior that could cause a mismatch. Correct the title source or integration if the label gets ahead of or falls behind the music.
  5. Recheck after changes. If you edit the playlist, change players, or alter how tracks are selected, test the overlay again. The cited resource does not establish compatibility or synchronization for every configuration or 24/7 deployment.

Why YouTube’s stream title does not label each song

YouTube’s Live Streaming API documents title and description fields for a live stream, while its LiveBroadcasts reference covers event information such as title, description, start and end times, and privacy settings. These fields describe the broadcast as a whole; the documentation does not describe an on-screen label that changes with each track. See the LiveStreams reference and LiveBroadcasts reference.

For the overall event, use YouTube’s broadcast title and description. For song names that change on screen, plan on a separate overlay or graphic that receives track information from an appropriate source.

Clear music rights separately from song labels

A song title on screen does not grant permission to broadcast the song. YouTube says it scans live streams for matches to third-party content; identified content may cause a placeholder image to replace the stream, and continued use can interrupt or terminate it. YouTube also says that, where a creator has licensed third-party content, the rights owner may need to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist to avoid interruption. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your stream uses uploaded recordings or a playlist and you want it to keep running without a computer at home, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from the cloud. The setup is: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos; it does not broadcast from a camera. It handles the continuous playback, while the song-name overlay still needs an accurate title source and its own verification.
