To show the current Gurbani song name inside the live video, add a text source to the scene your encoder sends to YouTube. In OBS, the text can come from a file that an operator or a tested integration updates as the music changes. Changing the stream title in YouTube Studio updates the watch-page metadata, not the text overlaid on the video.
Choose where the song name should appear
- Over the video: Add a text source to the encoder scene. Viewers see the label as part of the picture.
- On the YouTube watch page: Edit the stream’s title or description in YouTube Studio. This changes stream metadata, not the video image. See YouTube’s live stream settings.
These are separate outputs. If you want viewers to see the current shabad or kirtan name while watching, use an on-screen overlay.
Add a song-name overlay in OBS
- Open the scene that contains your stream layout. In OBS, select the scene used for the Gurbani video and audio.
- Add a text source. In the Sources panel, click the add (+) control, choose a text source, and give it a descriptive name such as “Current song.” OBS text sources can display customizable text, including text from a file; see the OBS Sources Guide.
- Choose the text input. For a simple manual workflow, enable the option to read text from a file and select a text file containing the song name. Enter the text directly in the source instead if you will change it inside OBS.
- Position and style the label. Place it where it does not obscure important imagery. Check contrast, font size, and line length at the output resolution, not only in the editing preview.
- Update the text when the track changes. In a manual workflow, change the file contents or source text at each song boundary. Confirm that the updated name appears in the OBS preview and then in the live output.
For unattended operation, the update must come from a dependable source that identifies the actual current item and changes the displayed text at the right time. The text source displays the supplied text; it does not, by itself, know which song is playing.

Choose how the label will stay current

OBS documents text sources and playlist playback as separate capabilities. Its documentation does not promise that playing a playlist automatically supplies the current filename or song title to a text source. Treat automatic display as an integration to configure and test, not as a built-in consequence of using a playlist.

If your Gurbani audio is an OBS playlist
OBS documents a VLC Video source that can play a playlist, loop it, and shuffle it. VLC must be installed for this source to be available. See OBS Media Sources.
- Add and configure the playlist playback source for your local media.
- Add the song-name text source separately.
- Decide who or what will update the text when playback advances. Do not assume the playlist automatically changes the label.
- Test track changes, including the transition from the last item back to the first if the playlist loops.
Test before leaving the stream unattended
- Check that the first displayed title matches the audio that is actually playing.
- Observe several track boundaries and confirm that the label changes at the intended time.
- Try a long title and check that it remains readable without covering essential content.
- Decide what the overlay should show when a title is missing or unknown. A neutral label or no label is less misleading than leaving the previous song name on screen.
- Confirm that your manual update process or integration keeps working for the full period the stream will run.
For a 24/7 broadcast, a manually edited file is only dependable while someone or a reliable process continues updating it. A playlist can keep playing while its label falls out of date; monitor the relationship between audio and displayed text.

Do not use live captions as a song-title overlay
YouTube’s live caption documentation describes captions that represent audio, including captions embedded in the video or sent through supported software over HTTP. It does not describe captions as a mechanism for displaying track names. See YouTube’s live caption requirements.
