To make meditation videos change gently in OBS, place each clip in its own scene, then select Fade in the Scene Transitions dock and adjust its duration. This fades between scenes; an OBS playlist handles playback order, but the documented controls do not establish that playlist items crossfade automatically.
Choose the transition that fits your stream
| Approach | Best for | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Fade scene transition | A simple, calm change between video scenes | Fade is built into OBS, and you can set its duration. OBS lists Fade and Cut as transitions available from the first launch. OBS Studio Overview Guide |
| VLC Video playlist | Playing a sequence of clips from one source | VLC Video supports playlists and requires VLC to be installed. Playlist playback and scene transitions are separate controls in OBS documentation; it does not describe playlist-item crossfades. OBS Media Sources |
| Stinger or track matte | A custom animated visual that covers or reveals the next scene | Track matte uses a mask: black indicates the outgoing scene, white the incoming scene, and gray blends them. For reliable sync, OBS recommends combining the overlay and matte in one file. OBS Stinger Transitions |
For most meditation streams, start with Fade. A stinger is optional; it takes more preparation and is not needed for a gentle dissolve. OBS documentation does not prescribe a meditation-specific duration, so choose one that suits the pace of your clips.
Set up a fade between separate meditation videos
- Create a scene for each clip or segment. In OBS, scenes contain sources that make up what viewers see. Separate scenes let you choose when to move from one video to another.
- Add the video to each scene. In the scene’s Sources dock, add a Media Source and select the local file. OBS documentation lists formats including
.mp4,.ts,.mov,.flv,.mkv,.avi,.gif, and.webm. Available formats can depend on the operating system and installed OBS setup. OBS Media Sources - Set playback behavior for each Media Source. In its properties, decide whether to enable Loop, Restart playback when source becomes active, or Show nothing when playback ends. The last option is useful if you want an ended clip to disappear instead of leaving its final frame onscreen.
- Choose Fade and set its duration. In the Scene Transitions dock, select Fade, then adjust the duration. The effect applies when you transition between scenes; pick a duration that feels appropriate for your content rather than treating any number as an official meditation setting. OBS Studio Overview Guide
- Use Studio Mode if you want to preview the next scene. Add Fade as a Quick Transition if you want to trigger it deliberately while previewing before taking the next scene live. OBS allows Quick Transitions to have their own durations. OBS Studio Overview Guide
- Preview the sequence before going live. Check that the incoming clip starts when you expect, the outgoing clip behaves as intended, and the transition looks right in your actual OBS setup. Interface labels may vary by OBS release.
Use an OBS playlist when playback order matters
If you want OBS to play several files in sequence from one source, add a VLC Video source and configure its playlist. VLC must be installed for this source. OBS describes VLC Video as offering a playlist, unlike the ordinary Media Source. OBS Media Sources
Do not assume that changing playlist items will trigger the scene Fade. The playlist controls which media item plays; the scene-transition controls determine how OBS switches scenes. The OBS documentation describes these functions separately and does not promise a crossfade between playlist items. If a soft change is essential, use separate scenes and trigger the Fade between them.

Make a custom stinger only if you need one
A stinger can add an animated visual between scenes, such as a slow light or shape passing across the screen. In OBS, a track matte uses black for the outgoing scene, white for the incoming scene, and gray for blended areas. For better sync reliability, OBS recommends placing the overlay and matte together in one file; separate files are not guaranteed to decode in lock-step. OBS Stinger Transitions
This approach requires preparing an appropriate transition asset. For an unobtrusive meditation stream, the built-in Fade is usually the simpler choice.

Troubleshoot transitions that do not look right
- The video changes abruptly. Confirm that Fade, rather than Cut, is selected in Scene Transitions, and adjust the Fade duration.
- A playlist advances without fading. Playlist playback does not itself configure a scene transition. Use separate scenes and trigger Fade between them if you need a soft switch.
- A clip stays frozen on its last frame. Check the Media Source’s Show nothing when playback ends setting if you want the source to disappear at the end.
- A clip does not restart when you return to its scene. Check Restart playback when source becomes active in that Media Source’s properties.
- VLC Video is unavailable or will not play its playlist. Verify that VLC is installed, then check the VLC Video source configuration.
- A stinger’s mask and overlay appear out of sync. If they are separate files, consider using the single combined overlay-and-matte file recommended by OBS.
