Use FFmpeg’s silencedetect filter to identify quiet audio, then have a separate playlist controller decide when to open the next episode. The filter reports silence; by itself it does not schedule files, build a video track, or switch episodes. For predictable transitions, use known episode boundaries; use silence-triggered changes only when quiet gaps are a deliberate part of your workflow.

What silence detection does—and what it does not do

FFmpeg’s silencedetect filter reports when audio stays at or below a chosen volume threshold for a minimum duration. It emits silence-start, silence-end, and duration information that another process can interpret. It does not itself choose or open the next episode. FFmpeg Filters Documentation

This separation matters for a YouTube stream: audio analysis, episode sequencing, and continuous audio/video encoding are three distinct jobs. A diagnostic command that analyzes one input is not a complete multi-file scheduler or a ready-to-broadcast stream.

Choose how episodes should change

Known episode boundaries

If episode lengths and order are known, use those boundaries as the primary schedule. A playlist controller can advance to the next file at the intended time, avoiding the risk that a quiet passage inside an episode is mistaken for its ending.

Silence-triggered transitions

Use a controller or script to interpret FFmpeg’s silence events and advance the playlist when a qualifying gap occurs. Test representative recordings first: quiet speech, pauses, room tone, music beds, and background noise can all affect detection. Define how the controller handles an episode’s last silence, missing files, intentional breaks, and reconnects.

Decide what the audience hears at a transition

Choose whether the next episode begins immediately, follows a fixed silence, or is separated by a short station ID or music bed. Silence detection only identifies audio conditions; it cannot make this editorial decision.

Set and test the silence threshold

The documented filter defaults are a noise threshold of -60 dB and a minimum duration of 2 seconds. They are starting points, not universal settings: the right values depend on the recordings’ noise floor and on how long a gap should be before a transition qualifies. The mono option evaluates channels separately. FFmpeg Filters Documentation

  1. Choose a few representative episodes, including the quietest speech and the noisiest recording.
  2. Run an analysis pass with silencedetect and direct the output to the null muxer, as shown in FFmpeg’s documentation. This is for examining timestamps, not broadcasting or switching episodes.
  3. Inspect the reported start, end, and duration events. Adjust the threshold and minimum duration so ordinary pauses do not trigger a change while the intended between-episode gap does.
  4. Run the analysis over the sample files again. Only automate transitions after the timestamps match the behavior you intend.

The exact analysis command depends on your input and FFmpeg build. The filter’s documented pattern is to apply -af silencedetect=... to an audio input and send analysis output to the null muxer; consult the filter documentation for syntax and options rather than treating a one-input example as a playlist implementation. Build the continuous stream around the detector

  1. Prepare the playlist. Put episodes in the intended order and define a fallback for a missing or unreadable file. Decide whether the final item should repeat, stop, or leave a planned break.
  2. Run detection and orchestration separately. Feed episode audio to the detector, and let a controller act on qualifying events or use known file boundaries. Do not rely on silencedetect alone to perform playlist transitions.
  3. Provide a video track. A podcast audio playlist still needs video for a YouTube Live encoder workflow. Choose the visual source and ensure the output stays continuous across episode changes; the detector does not generate video.
  4. Encode and send the output. Configure the encoder with the ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. The necessary command and filter graph depend on whether episodes are files, separate inputs, or an existing live audio source, and on how video is supplied.
  5. Test privately and monitor. Use a private or unlisted test stream to check transitions, audio continuity, video, and recovery behavior before a public broadcast. Monitor stream health in YouTube Live Control Room.

Configure YouTube Live output

YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio; it recommends RTMPS. For video, YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds, and recommends constant bitrate (CBR). Its bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so select the relevant row in the official settings guide instead of using a universal bitrate. For stereo audio, the guide lists 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps among its recommended advanced settings. YouTube: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions

Create or configure the live stream in YouTube Studio, then use the stream URL and stream key it provides in the encoder. YouTube’s live settings also include options for allowing the encoder to start or stop the stream. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not expose it in public commands, logs, screenshots, or source code. YouTube: Manage live stream settings

Troubleshoot common transition problems

  • A quiet pause changes episodes too early: the threshold or minimum duration is too permissive for that recording. Review the detector timestamps and tune against quiet speech and pauses, or use known episode boundaries instead.
  • The intended gap is not detected: room tone, music, or other background sound may remain above the threshold, or the qualifying gap may be shorter than the configured duration. Inspect a representative analysis and adjust settings carefully.
  • The detector reports silence but the playlist does not advance: detection and scheduling are separate. Check that the controller receives and interprets the event and is configured to select the next available episode.
  • The stream has a gap or abrupt audio change: confirm the controller’s transition rule and that the output remains continuous while inputs change. A detector event alone does not guarantee a seamless handoff.
  • YouTube does not accept the stream or reports poor health: verify the selected encoder settings against YouTube’s codec, bitrate, keyframe, and audio guidance; confirm the correct stream URL and key; then review stream health in Live Control Room.

Copyright and YouTube channel considerations

Only stream episodes and accompanying music or other audio that you have the rights to use on YouTube. Silence detection does not change copyright obligations or guarantee that a stream is permitted. Review YouTube’s applicable live-stream and channel policies before broadcasting, especially if you are compiling or replaying material you did not create.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded podcast episodes looping on a YouTube channel rather than build a custom silence-triggered scheduler, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It keeps the stream running without a computer, OBS, or home connection staying on. Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
