Add search and filters by giving every event reliable, explicit fields—such as its name, date, location, and category—and using those fields to narrow a results list. Keep the listing page for browsing multiple events, and give each event its own detail page with accurate information. That structure also aligns with Google’s guidance for event discovery.

Start with a reliable event record

Search works best when it queries event data rather than trying to interpret loosely formatted display text. Before adding controls, decide which details the site will store and keep current for every event.

  • Name and description: Use the event name for direct matches and the description for related terms visitors may search.
  • Start and end date/time: Store the event’s actual local date and time when known. Keep timezone information where it is available.
  • Location: Record a consistent place value that can support the kinds of location searches your catalogue needs.
  • Category: Use meaningful, consistently applied categories if they help visitors distinguish event types.
  • Status: Track changes such as cancellation so results and detail pages do not continue to present an event as upcoming.
  • Detail-page URL: Assign each event a stable, unique page address.

These fields reflect the search dimensions described in GOSS Interactive’s Event Search documentation, which covers keyword, date, and location options and identifies location and event category as possible refinements. Google Search Central identifies an event’s name, start date, and location as key event facts.

Build a search-and-refine flow

Let visitors begin with words, then narrow the matching events using fields your catalogue can maintain accurately. For a smaller catalogue, querying the site’s own event records may be sufficient; a large catalogue may justify evaluating a dedicated search service, but there is no universal size threshold established here.

  1. Search by keyword. Provide a search field for event names and related terms, using the event’s name and description as searchable fields.
  2. Choose a date or period. Let visitors narrow results to the time span they care about. Use stored event dates rather than parsing date text shown on a card.
  3. Refine by location. Offer location choices that fit the places represented in the catalogue.
  4. Refine by category. Include category controls when the site’s events have meaningful, consistent categories.
  5. Show matching results. Make each result’s date and place visible so visitors can quickly judge whether it is relevant.

This is a practical interaction plan based on the documented search options and event fields, not a claim about results from a usability test. Avoid offering a filter that the underlying records cannot support reliably.

Keep listings and event pages distinct

A listing page helps people discover and compare multiple events. An individual detail page gives one event a clear destination with its own facts and URL. Google Search Central recommends a unique leaf URL for each event, with that event’s structured data on the same page; a general schedule listing is not a substitute for an individual event page.

If you want to support Google’s event experience, add event structured data to qualifying individual pages and follow Google’s current event structured-data guidelines. Google says its event experience helps people discover and attend events through Search and products such as Maps. Adding markup alone does not guarantee eligibility or display.

Handle dates, time zones, and cancellations accurately

Keep the date and time on search results, detail pages, and structured data consistent. Google recommends accurate local date and time data, including timezone offsets where known. If the event time is unknown or the event lasts all day, do not invent a more specific time.

When an event is cancelled, update its event status and keep identifying information such as its start date, rather than deleting or changing details in a way that obscures which event was cancelled. This helps keep the listing, detail page, and event data coherent.

Choose an approach that fits the catalogue

The right implementation depends on the catalogue and the quality of its data. Compare the practical considerations before choosing how to power search.

Consideration What to assess
Catalogue size and query needs Determine whether querying the site’s event records meets the need, or whether a dedicated search service merits evaluation. No specific provider or size threshold is established here.
Filter data quality Date, location, and category controls are only dependable when those event fields are accurate and consistently maintained.
Page structure and discovery For Google’s event experience, plan unique individual event URLs and place each event’s structured data on its own page.
Freshness Keep event dates and status synchronized across results, detail pages, and structured data as events change.

  • Try a keyword, date, location, and category refinement against events with known values.
  • Confirm that results show enough date and place information to distinguish similar events.
  • Open a result and check that its unique detail page shows the same current facts as the listing.
  • Verify that unknown times are not rendered as precise times and that cancelled events show the correct status.
  • If using event structured data, validate the implementation against Google’s current guidance and monitor it after changes; markup does not ensure a search feature will appear.
