To get useful markup, tell Yoast whether your site represents a person or an organization, keep its Schema Framework enabled, choose accurate content-type defaults, and use FAQ or HowTo blocks only when the page visibly contains that kind of content. You usually do not need to write JSON-LD by hand.
What Yoast does automatically
Yoast SEO generates structured data as a connected Schema.org graph rather than treating every piece of markup as an isolated snippet. Its output can include core WebPage and Article pieces, with other entities added according to the page, site representation, integrations, and settings. Depending on those factors, the graph may also include items such as BreadcrumbList, ImageObject, Organization or Person, FAQPage, HowTo, Product, or Review. The exact output is not identical for every site or URL. Yoast’s implementation guide explains how the graph fits together.
Yoast’s documented defaults are WebPage for Pages and Article plus WebPage for Posts. Those defaults are a starting point, not a reason to mark content as something it is not. Schema describes the page and its content; it is not a guarantee that a search engine will show a rich result or improve a ranking.
Set up the site and keep the Schema Framework on
- Set the site representation. Identify whether the site represents a person or an organization and provide the accurate information in Yoast’s site settings. This supplies entity context for the graph. Follow Yoast’s Schema implementation guide for the setup details.
- Check the framework setting. In WordPress, open Yoast SEO → Settings → Advanced → Schema and confirm that the Schema Framework is enabled. Yoast says the framework builds one connected graph and strongly advises leaving it on. See the Schema settings guide.
- Review content-type defaults. In Yoast’s content-type settings, review the defaults for Posts and Pages. Yoast documents Pages as
WebPageand Posts asArticleplusWebPage. Change a default only if it better reflects the content that type of page normally contains. Yoast’s content-type guide covers the defaults.
Do not disable the framework simply to remove one graph piece or because you plan to add custom data. Yoast advises using its connected graph and integrating additional schema into it when you need extra pieces.

Choose the right schema for each page
Posts and Pages
For an ordinary blog post, the Article and WebPage defaults are generally the appropriate baseline described by Yoast. A standard informational page can use the WebPage default. If an individual post or page genuinely needs a different valid type, open that item in the editor and use the Yoast SEO sidebar or meta box Schema controls to adjust it. A change to the global default does not overwrite content that already has an individual non-default setting. Check the page-level choice before assuming a global change has taken effect. Content-type settings documentation.
FAQ content
Use Yoast’s FAQ structured-data block when the page actually presents a set of questions and their answers. The block adds the corresponding structured-data pieces automatically. Do not label an ordinary page as FAQPage merely because you want a different search display; the structured data should accurately describe visible page content. Yoast’s structured-data blocks overview describes its FAQ block.

HowTo content
For genuine step-by-step instructions, use Yoast’s HowTo block to add the matching structured-data pieces. It is not a general-purpose way to label any article as a procedure: the page should visibly contain the steps that the markup represents. See the Yoast structured-data blocks overview and implementation guide.
Breadcrumbs
Enable and implement Yoast breadcrumbs when they are useful for the site’s navigation. Yoast breadcrumbs can be displayed on the website, and their data can output a BreadcrumbList in the page source; search engines may use that data for breadcrumb displays. Schema output and visible navigation belong together: configure breadcrumbs as a site feature rather than adding a breadcrumb type to pages that do not use a meaningful hierarchy. Yoast provides separate guides for breadcrumb settings and implementing breadcrumbs.

| Approach | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Content-type defaults | Routine Posts and Pages that match Yoast’s documented defaults. | Confirm the default describes the content type accurately; Yoast documents Pages as WebPage and Posts as Article plus WebPage. Source |
| Page-level Schema controls | A single item that needs a different valid type from the global default. | Existing non-default individual settings are not overwritten by a global default change. Source |
| FAQ or HowTo blocks | Pages whose visible content is actually a set of questions and answers or a step-by-step guide. | Make sure the page content matches the structured data. Source |
| Plugin integrations | Sites using a supported plugin whose content needs schema-specific integration. | Yoast lists integrations for The Events Calendar, Seriously Simple Podcasting, WP Recipe Maker, Yoast WooCommerce SEO, and Easy Digital Downloads. Check the relevant integration’s behavior for your site. Source |
| Schema API or documented filters | Developer-managed changes to graph pieces that the settings and blocks do not cover. | Integrate additions with Yoast’s graph instead of emitting a conflicting second graph. Schema API and plugin documentation |
Start with the least complex option that accurately represents the content. A block or integration usually avoids custom maintenance for its supported case; custom API work gives developers control but requires someone to maintain the implementation as the site and its plugins change.
Verify the rendered output
- Save or update the page after changing its settings or blocks.
- Open the public page and inspect its rendered source for the structured data Yoast outputs. Confirm the page-level type and entities reflect the actual page, rather than relying only on the editor setting.
- If the graph is unexpected, check the individual page’s Schema setting, the content-type default, the site representation, the framework toggle, and any schema-producing plugin or theme.
- When custom code or an integration is involved, inspect the final rendered output again after the change. Yoast recommends integrating custom schema with its graph; duplicate JSON-LD from a separate plugin or theme can create conflicting output. Implementation guidance.
Schema can help search engines understand a page and may make it eligible for supported rich-result treatments, but eligibility is not a promise of display. Yoast’s cited feature and help pages publish no validated numerical ranking uplift from using its schema, so treat accurate markup as structured description, not a ranking shortcut.

Common problems and how to fix them
- The page still has the old type after a default change: inspect the page’s own Schema controls. A previously selected individual non-default setting is not replaced by changing the global default. Choose the intended valid type for that item if appropriate. Yoast’s content-type guide.
- FAQ or HowTo markup does not match the page: make the visible content genuinely fit the block, or remove the block. Structured data that misrepresents page content can trigger validation errors or unexpected behavior. Yoast’s guidance on selecting types.
- There is more than one JSON-LD graph: identify whether a theme, another plugin, or custom code is also emitting schema. Avoid duplicate output and integrate extra pieces with Yoast’s graph where needed. Yoast implementation guide.
- Breadcrumb data appears but the navigation is not as expected: review the breadcrumb configuration and implementation, and make sure the site hierarchy makes sense to visitors. Consult the settings guide and implementation guide.
- A supported plugin’s content is missing its expected schema: verify that the plugin and relevant Yoast integration are in use and consult the integration documentation. Do not assume every integration adds the same schema to every page. Yoast’s integration documentation.

If you need a visual screenshot of a published page while checking your changes, ScreenshotNeo can capture a URL with one GET request. It does not add or validate schema markup; use it for a visual record alongside inspection of the rendered structured data. The API can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. ScreenshotNeo also accepts options for full-page captures, element selection, waits, custom CSS and JavaScript, among others. See the API documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Yoast SEO schema require writing JSON-LD manually?
No. Yoast automatically outputs structured data; manual developer work is for cases that its settings, blocks, and integrations do not cover.
Can I change the schema type for just one post or page?
Yes. Use the Yoast SEO Schema controls in that item’s editor rather than changing the site-wide content-type default.
