To put a picture-in-picture inset into the broadcast itself, build the layout in OBS: add your main video source, add a second source such as a webcam, then resize and position that source over the main picture. Every viewer will see the composed scene. If you instead mean a small player that floats on your own screen while you use another app, that is a playback-device feature—not a change to the live broadcast.
Broadcast picture-in-picture versus a floating player
Broadcast picture-in-picture is made by layering two or more sources in a streaming scene. For example, the stream can show a game or screen capture as the main image and a webcam in a corner. OBS scenes and sources provide the layout controls for positioning and ordering those images. OBS Sources Guide
A floating player is different: it appears on the viewer’s device while they use another app. Android’s documentation describes PiP as an app playback feature, not a way to add an inset to a live broadcast. Android Developers: Use picture-in-picture (PiP)
What you need before setting up the scene
- OBS and a main source: This could be a display, game, window, camera, or another video input.
- A second video source: A USB webcam is a straightforward choice for a presenter inset. OBS also supports capture devices, including capture cards, where compatible. OBS: Video Capture Sources
- Compatible hardware and format: The operating system, drivers, capture device, resolution, and frame-rate mode can affect whether an input works as intended. Check the device documentation and OBS compatibility details before buying hardware.
You do not automatically need a capture card. It is relevant when you need to bring an external HDMI camera or other HDMI source into the computer; a USB webcam can connect directly if the computer and OBS support it. OBS’s capture-source documentation notes platform and device differences, including Windows DirectShow support and format considerations for Blackmagic devices. OBS: Video Capture Sources

How to add picture-in-picture in OBS
- Select the scene that will go live. In OBS, choose an existing scene or create one, then make sure it is the scene you intend to stream.
- Add the main picture. Add the screen, game, window, camera, or other video source that should fill the background. OBS sources are added to and arranged within a scene. OBS Sources Guide
- Add the inset video source. For a webcam, use a Video Capture Device source and select the camera in its properties. OBS’s webcam instructions describe adding a camera source and positioning it in the preview. OBS: How do I add my webcam?
- Place the inset over the main image. Select the second source in the preview canvas and drag it to the desired position. Resize it using the source’s on-screen handles. Confirm that it is layered above the main source in the Sources list; source order affects which image appears on top. OBS Sources Guide
- Check the full composition before going live. Confirm that the inset is visible, does not cover important content, and that the intended video and audio sources are active. Preview the scene before starting the broadcast.
Button placement and labels can vary between OBS releases. These steps use the documented scene-and-source workflow; consult the help for your installed version if a control appears in a different place.
Choose the right source for the inset
| Inset source | Best suited to | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| USB webcam | A presenter camera connected to the streaming computer | That the camera is available to OBS and supports the mode you want to use. Add it as a Video Capture Device source. |
| External HDMI camera or device | A camera or other HDMI input that is not directly available to the computer | Whether a capture card is needed and whether its drivers, operating-system support, resolution, frame rate, and format match your setup. Compatibility depends on the devices and platform. OBS: Video Capture Sources |
| Browser Source | A web-based overlay or other visual element loaded from a URL or local file | Browser Source is for displaying web content in the scene, not capturing a physical camera. OBS documents availability on Windows and macOS and through official packages on Linux. OBS: Browser Source |
| Existing screen or window source | A software window or screen view used as one layer of the composition | Choose the appropriate source for the content you want to show, then position the second source above it. |
Common problems and fixes
The webcam does not appear in OBS
Check that the camera is connected and available to the operating system, then reopen the Video Capture Device source properties and select the intended device. If it is an external HDMI camera, confirm that the capture card and its driver are supported by your operating system and that the camera’s output mode is compatible.

The inset is too large or covers important content
