Install apps from Microsoft Store when possible. To remove an app, try the Start menu or Settings; if Settings has no uninstall option, use Control Panel for a desktop program. The exact Settings labels differ: Windows 11 uses Installed apps, while Windows 10 uses Apps & features.
How to install an app in Windows 10 or 11
Install from Microsoft Store
Microsoft recommends Microsoft Store as the source for apps. Open Microsoft Store, find the app, and select its install option. Store availability depends on the app and your device; not every app is offered there.
Allow or restrict apps from elsewhere
Windows can control where apps may be obtained. In Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Apps > Advanced app settings and choose the setting under “Choose where to get apps.” You can require Microsoft Store apps or have Windows warn or recommend when an app comes from elsewhere. Microsoft documents corresponding app-source settings under Settings > Apps > Apps & features in Windows 10. [Microsoft Support]
If you install from outside the Store, use the software publisher’s installer and proceed only if your device settings and organization policy allow it. These settings do not establish that an installer is safe; verify that the app and publisher are trustworthy.

Check S mode before installing
Windows 10 and Windows 11 devices in S mode allow apps only from Microsoft Store. Switching out of S mode removes that Store-only restriction, but Microsoft says the switch is one-way. Consider that consequence before changing modes. [Microsoft’s S mode FAQ]
Choose an uninstall route

Remove an app from Start or Settings
Use Start
- Open Start > All apps.
- Find the app, right-click it or press and hold it, then select Uninstall.
- Follow any confirmation or uninstall prompts shown.
Use Settings in Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the app, select its More menu, then select Uninstall.
- Complete the prompts from Windows or the app’s uninstaller.
Use Settings in Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
- Select the app, then choose Uninstall.
- Complete the prompts.
Use Control Panel when Settings has no uninstall option
Control Panel can expose uninstall controls for some traditional desktop programs that Settings cannot remove. It is a fallback, not a guarantee that every app can be removed.
- Search for and open Control Panel.
- Open Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the program and choose Uninstall or Uninstall/Change.
- Follow the program’s uninstall prompts.
Repair an app or troubleshoot an uninstall failure
Try Repair or Reset for supported apps
For apps that expose these controls, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11, select the app’s More > Advanced options, then choose Repair. In Windows 10, look under Settings > Apps > Apps & features for the app’s advanced options. If Repair is unavailable or does not solve the problem, try Reset where offered. For a Windows 11 app that is stuck
Microsoft’s Windows 11 guidance recommends restarting the PC first, then trying repair or reset when available, uninstalling from Settings, or using Windows-recommended troubleshooters. Store apps may require Store-specific troubleshooting rather than steps intended for desktop programs. [Microsoft: Fix problems with apps from Microsoft Store]
For a Windows 10 desktop program that will not install, update, or uninstall
Microsoft provides the Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter for specified cases involving corrupted registry keys or incomplete uninstall data. It is aimed at desktop programs, not a general-purpose remover for every app. [Microsoft: Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter]
