Add Open Graph (OG) metadata to the published web page that an email links to—not to the email’s HTML. Social platforms fetch the destination page to build a preview; the email itself is a separate format.
Put the tags in the destination page’s HTML head
Open Graph tags are <meta> elements in the <head> of the public landing page. The Open Graph protocol specifies four required properties: og:title, og:type, og:image, and og:url. For a typical landing page, use website as the type. Open Graph protocol
<!doctype html>
<html lang="en">
<head>
<meta charset="utf-8">
<title>Spring offer</title>
<meta property="og:title" content="Spring offer">
<meta property="og:type" content="website">
<meta property="og:url" content="https://example.com/spring-offer/">
<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/images/spring-offer-share.jpg">
<meta property="og:description" content="Explore the spring offer and see what's included.">
</head>
<body>
<!-- Landing-page content -->
</body>
</html>
Replace the example content with the page’s actual title and description. Use its public, canonical URL for og:url and an image URL that social crawlers can reach without logging in. The protocol describes og:description as optional but generally recommended. It also documents optional og:site_name and og:locale, plus image details such as og:image:width, og:image:height, og:image:type, and og:image:alt. It says an image should have alt text. Place the tags inside a valid document <head>, not in the page body or the email markup. Google identifies the head as the primary location for page metadata and warns that an invalid element in the head can cause it to ignore subsequent elements. Its valid-element list includes title, meta, link, script, style, base, noscript, and template. Google Search Central: valid page metadata

Check the rendered page source or template output for repeated OG properties. The protocol permits repeated elements when a property has multiple values, but says the first value in document order wins in conflicts. A template and a plugin can therefore create an unintended duplicate where the earlier value takes precedence. Open Graph protocol
Add the tags in your page editor or builder
For a page you control as HTML
- Open the template or source for the published landing page.
- Add the OG
<meta>elements inside its<head>, using the page’s own canonical URL and public image URL. - Save and publish the page, then inspect the output to confirm the tags appear once and in the head.
For Unbounce Classic Builder
- Open Page Properties, then Open Graph Meta Data.
- Choose the content type and enter the title and description.
- Provide the image URL and page URL.
- Save and republish the page.
These are Unbounce-specific directions from its guide; builder interfaces can change. The guide suggests an image of at least 600 × 315 pixels and recommends 1200 × 630 pixels for display across many social networks on high-resolution devices. Those are vendor recommendations, not requirements in the Open Graph protocol. Follow the target platform’s current image specifications when exact rendering matters. Publish and refresh the preview
- Publish or republish the landing page so the public URL serves the updated head markup.
- Use the relevant social platform’s preview or debugging tool to check what it reads.
- If the preview still shows old information, request a fresh scrape or refresh through that platform’s available tool.
Previously shared URLs may continue to show cached metadata. Unbounce’s guide recommends requesting a new scrape through Facebook’s debugging tool and mentions LinkedIn and X/Twitter refresh tools. Tool names and caching behavior may change by platform, so check the platform’s current help material if those controls have moved. Unbounce guide Open Graph protocol
HTML email and its linked landing page are different
If “HTML email landing page” means the web destination linked from a message, add the tags to that destination page. If you mean the email body itself, Open Graph is not a replacement for email-specific markup or message headers. Open Email Standards’ documentation describes social metadata such as Open Graph as irrelevant to email clients; treat that as its guidance, rather than a claim that every email client behaves identically. If you need a screenshot of the published page to inspect or share its appearance, ScreenshotNeo can capture a URL with one request. Its API can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF, and its MCP server offers screenshot tools for AI agents. Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Here is a cURL request for the landing page:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/spring-offer/ -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month—no card required.
