To loop multiple nature videos on YouTube Live, add them to an OBS Studio VLC Video Source, turn on Loop Playlist, and send OBS to YouTube through the Live Control Room. The playlist repeats only while your computer, OBS, video files, power, and internet connection keep working; it does not make a local setup self-recovering.
Set up an OBS playlist of nature videos
- Install OBS Studio and VLC. The VLC Video Source depends on VLC libraries. Match the architecture: if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. OBS documents this source and its playlist controls at OBS Project’s media sources guide.
- Choose the stream scene. In OBS, create or select the scene you intend to broadcast. Add a VLC Video Source from the Sources panel.
- Add your files. Open the VLC source’s properties and add the local nature-video files to its playlist. Arrange them in the order you want viewers to see them. Check that each file is readable and plays correctly.
- Set the repeat behavior. Enable Loop Playlist so playback restarts after the final item. Leave Shuffle Playlist off for a fixed sequence, or turn it on for randomized playback. OBS documents Loop Playlist as on by default and Shuffle Playlist as off by default; verify the settings in your source properties.
- Fit and review the scene. Confirm the video fills the output as intended and that the selected source is visible. Play through the list and check transitions, picture, and audio before broadcasting. A private or otherwise appropriate test lets you inspect the actual YouTube output.
For a single repeating file, OBS also offers a separate Media Source with a Loop option, which defaults off. For several files, VLC Video Source is the playlist option. OBS lists supported local media formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or select the stream setup and use OBS as the encoder. YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance explains the account requirements and setup.
- In OBS, enter the stream key and server details provided for the YouTube stream. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to broadcast to your channel. Do not show it in a recording or share it publicly.
- Start streaming from OBS, then check the Live Control Room preview and the public or test output before leaving the stream unattended.
YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restriction in the prior 90 days to go live. Its live content must follow the Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Use only video and audio for which you have the necessary rights; nature footage can still contain copyrighted music, ambient recordings, or other protected material.

Looping controls what OBS plays after the playlist ends. It does not keep a stream running if the computer shuts down, OBS crashes, a file becomes unavailable, power fails, or the internet connection drops. Monitor the broadcast and be prepared to restart it if the local encoder or connection stops.

YouTube distinguishes a stream—the incoming audio-video feed and its settings—from a broadcast, the event or video viewers watch. Its Live Streaming API documentation describes a continuous feed that can remain active while a separate broadcast is started and completed. That distinction can matter when managing a continuous feed versus ending and creating separate live events.
Do you need a different YouTube ingestion protocol?
Not to loop a playlist. OBS can send the playlist through a standard YouTube encoder setup; changing the ingestion protocol does not add playlist functionality. YouTube HLS is a specialized option for encoder or format needs such as HDR or codecs unsupported by RTMP. HLS has higher latency than RTMP and specific transport requirements: TS segments must be 1–4 seconds, the rolling playlist can have no more than five outstanding segments, requests use HTTPS POST/PUT, and byte ranges are not allowed. These are HLS requirements, not OBS playlist settings; see YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance.

Limits and problems to check
- VLC source is missing or fails to load: confirm VLC is installed and its architecture matches OBS. Restart OBS after installing VLC if the source does not appear.
- Only one clip plays: confirm you added a VLC Video Source playlist rather than a Media Source. Check that the playlist contains all intended files.
- Playback stops at the last clip: open the source properties and turn on Loop Playlist.
- Clip order changes unexpectedly: turn off Shuffle Playlist and reorder the files in the source playlist.
- A clip is black, silent, or skipped: check the file path, permissions, and whether the file opens and plays locally. Avoid moving or renaming playlist files after setup unless you update their paths.
- YouTube does not accept the stream: verify the stream key and encoder setup, confirm the channel is verified, and check that the channel has no live-streaming restriction from the prior 90 days.
- The live output stops despite Loop Playlist: the loop only governs playback; check OBS, the computer, power, file availability, and internet access.
YouTube Help lists a platform limit of 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key. These are documented maximums, not a recommendation to run multiple broadcasts.
