WordPress’s standard Featured Image control assigns one representative image to a post; it does not provide several independent featured-image slots. If you want multiple pictures in the article, add a Gallery block. If you need separate images that a theme or template can display independently, use a plugin or custom image fields—and make sure the site is configured to output them.

First decide what “multiple featured images” means

There are two different goals behind this request:

  • Show several images within the article: Add a Gallery block. The images are post content, not additional featured-image fields. WordPress’s Gallery block documentation explains how to add and arrange multiple photos.
  • Store multiple separate images for templates or listings: The normal Featured Image control is not designed for that. You need additional image fields supplied by a plugin or a custom implementation, plus a way for the active theme or template to display each field.

The distinction matters: adding more pictures to the post body does not create more featured-image metadata fields. WordPress describes the Image block’s “Set as featured image” action as assigning the selected image as the post or page’s featured image. That action is separate from adding an image to the article.

Add multiple images to a post with a Gallery block

For images readers should see in the post itself, the built-in Gallery block is the simplest native option.

  1. Open the post in the WordPress block editor.
  2. Select the block inserter, or create a new block and type /gallery.
  3. Upload images or select several from the Media Library.
  4. Arrange the images, then adjust the gallery’s columns and image sizing in the block settings.
  5. Preview the post and check its front end. The theme affects how post content appears.

This creates a gallery within the post content. It does not add multiple independent featured-image fields.

Add separate featured-image fields for a theme or listing

If a template needs distinct images—for example, a primary image plus another image used in a different location—the site needs fields beyond WordPress’s standard featured image.

  1. Identify where each image should appear and which post type needs the fields.
  2. Evaluate a plugin that explicitly adds multiple featured images, or ask a developer to implement additional image fields for the site.
  3. Before installing a plugin, check its current WordPress compatibility, latest update, tested version, reviews, and documentation on its live directory page.
  4. Confirm how the active theme or template will output each added field. Do not assume the standard Post Featured Image block will display plugin-added fields.

The Bulk Featured Image plugin listing describes a multiple-featured-image feature, but that listing alone does not establish the plugin’s current compatibility or setup steps. Check its live details before relying on it. Custom implementation also depends on the site’s theme, post type, and display requirements; avoid editing theme files without a site-specific plan.

Understand what WordPress’s featured-image controls do

The standard Featured Image

A featured image is a representative image associated with a post, page, or supported custom post type. WordPress’s theme handbook documents the theme support and output involved. Featured Images & Post Thumbnails – Theme Handbook

The Image block’s assignment action

When you choose “Set as featured image” for an Image block, WordPress assigns that image as the post or page’s featured image. It does not create another slot. Image block documentation

The Post Featured Image block

The core Post Featured Image block displays the post’s standard featured image. It is mainly intended for Query Loop templates and can be used in site templates where the theme supports the Site Editor. It is not a gallery and does not automatically render extra fields added by a plugin. See the Post Featured Image block documentation and the Featured Image block developer reference.

If the Featured Image control is missing

In classic themes, the theme must declare add_theme_support( 'post-thumbnails' ) for the Featured Image interface to appear. Custom post type configuration can also affect whether the control is available. The theme handbook covers the support requirement.

  • Check whether the editor’s Featured Image panel is hidden in screen options or editor preferences.
  • Check whether the active theme supports post thumbnails.
  • If you are editing a custom post type, verify that its configuration supports featured images.

If you need to change theme or post-type configuration, have the change made in a way that suits the site’s setup rather than assuming an editor setting can add support.
