To show viewers the conversation alongside a prerecorded YouTube broadcast, send the video to YouTube as a live stream, keep live chat available, and leave Live chat replay enabled for the archive. YouTube says replay is on by default for live streams, but check the archived video after the broadcast. Live chat replay is different from DVR: replay accompanies the finished archive; DVR lets viewers pause and rewind while the stream is still live.

How to enable Live chat replay

  1. Send the prerecorded video to YouTube as a live broadcast. Use a local encoder to play a looping playlist, or use a continuous-stream service. In either case, the video must reach YouTube as a live broadcast for the live-chat and replay workflow to apply. YouTube’s archive behavior is not guaranteed simply because playback is continuous.
  2. Create or configure the event in YouTube Studio. Set up the live event and make sure live chat is enabled. Chat is unavailable if the stream is designated as made for kids, according to YouTube’s live-chat guidance.
  3. Keep Live chat replay enabled for the archive. YouTube says Live chat replay is on by default for live streams. To check an individual archived stream, open YouTube Studio’s Live tab, select the video, open its Customization tab, and make sure the Live chat replay checkbox is selected. Clearing it turns replay off. See YouTube’s Live chat replay instructions.
  4. Check the archive on the YouTube watch page. Confirm the video and synchronized chat replay appear as expected after the broadcast. YouTube says chat is available on watch pages, not embedded players, so do not promise that viewers can see replay in an embedded video. Details are in YouTube’s chat guidance.

Live chat replay, DVR, and the archive are different

Live chat replay: conversation with the finished stream

Live chat replay displays the conversation as it appeared during the live broadcast alongside its archive. YouTube describes this feature in its Live chat help.

DVR: pause and rewind during the live broadcast

DVR controls let viewers pause and rewind while a stream is active. YouTube warns that rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours; this is a DVR limitation, not a statement that chat replay or an archive will necessarily be unavailable. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.

Archive availability: whether the finished broadcast is available

Archive availability is a separate consideration. YouTube’s Live API documentation describes an immediate-playback condition after a broadcast ends that requires both archive and DVR settings to be enabled: YouTube Live API documentation. For a 24/7 broadcast, plan how and when the event will end if you need a completed archive, then verify the archive and replay on its watch page. YouTube’s cited guidance does not establish a universal guarantee that one indefinitely running stream will produce an archive with replay.

Choose where the continuous stream runs

Consideration Local encoder Continuous-stream service
Where playback runs On your computer, using an encoder and looping playlist. In the provider’s environment, subject to its actual offering.
Local equipment You need a computer capable of running the encoder, plus the source media and a working network connection. Can avoid maintaining a dedicated streaming computer, depending on the service.
Operational control You control playback and encoder settings locally. Control depends on the provider’s tools and policies.
YouTube archive behavior Plan for YouTube’s long-stream limitations and verify the archive. A service does not guarantee YouTube will create an archive or retain chat replay.

This is a qualitative comparison of workflow types, not a performance test. A dedicated mini PC is optional rather than a YouTube requirement; choose local hardware only if you want to host the encoder yourself.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping prerecorded videos live on YouTube. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay running at home; it streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo does not determine whether YouTube creates an archive or enables chat replay, so follow the YouTube checks above. Common problems and fixes

  • No chat replay on the archive: In YouTube Studio, open Live, select the video, then open Customization and check that Live chat replay is selected. Verify the result on the watch page.
  • Chat is unavailable during the broadcast: Check whether the stream is designated as made for kids. YouTube’s live-chat guidance says chat is unavailable for that designation.
  • Replay disappeared after editing: YouTube says streams edited in its video editor will not have chat replay. Avoid that editor if preserving replay matters.
  • Viewers cannot see replay in an embed: YouTube says chat is available on watch pages, not embedded players. Direct viewers to the YouTube watch page.
  • Viewers cannot rewind far back: DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Do not treat this as evidence that the archived chat replay is missing; check the archive separately.
  • No completed archive after an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast: A single indefinitely running stream should not be treated as equivalent to a series of shorter events. If a completed archive matters, plan how to end and archive the broadcast and verify the result in YouTube.

Copyright and reused-content checks

Before looping prerecorded material, make sure you have the rights needed to stream it. YouTube’s live-chat and DVR guidance does not determine whether particular music, video, or other material is authorized, or whether a channel meets monetization rules. Use the copyright safety checklist to review rights considerations; it does not replace YouTube’s policies or legal advice.
