You can enable YouTube’s built-in live captions for an individual stream in YouTube Studio, but the native feature currently captions English speech only, may not be available to every channel, and requires normal latency. YouTube does not provide a general Studio switch that automatically publishes translated caption tracks for every live stream. For non-English or more dependable captions, creators can send a caption feed; viewers can also use private browser-side translation tools that do not change the stream itself.
Choose the caption workflow that matches your goal
“Live captions” and “live translations” can mean several different things. The key distinction is whether captions are a selectable track attached to the stream, text embedded in the video, or an overlay seen only by one viewer.
| Approach | Who sets it up | What viewers see | Language and persistence |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube automatic live captions | Creator, in the individual stream’s settings | Native captions, where available | English only according to YouTube Help; live captions do not remain on the finished video |
| Supplied captions | Creator, using embedded captions or supported caption-delivery software | A caption feed associated with the live stream | Useful when automatic captions are insufficient; YouTube’s documented embedded workflow currently supports one caption track |
| Separate streaming API | Developer configuring a compatible streaming workflow | Generated captions and translations for supported HLS or DASH streams | Availability depends on location and language; not a standard YouTube Studio toggle |
| Burned-in translation overlay | Creator, using an overlay in streaming software | Text permanently composited into the video image | Not a selectable caption track; viewers cannot switch it off or restyle it as captions |
| Browser-side viewer translation | Individual viewer | A private subtitle overlay in that viewer’s browser | Does not add captions to the broadcast or make them available to other viewers |
Enable YouTube’s automatic live captions
YouTube Help says, “Automatic captions for live streams are available in English only.” The feature is still rolling out, so these controls may not appear for every channel. YouTube’s documented native live-caption workflow also requires normal latency; low- and ultra-low-latency streams are listed as limitations.
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room for the specific stream.
- Open that stream’s settings and enable Closed captions.
- Select Automatic captions as the caption source, if the option is available.
- Set the video’s language to English, then save or apply the stream settings.
Labels can change as YouTube updates Studio. If the option is missing, check that the stream uses normal latency and review YouTube’s rollout guidance. YouTube Help also lists having fewer than 1,000 subscribers as a possible rollout eligibility issue; it should not be treated as a permanent universal rule for every channel.

What the automatic captions can and cannot do
This is English speech recognition, not a creator-side translation setting. YouTube says live automatic captions do not remain on the finished stream: “After the live stream ends, live automatic captions won’t remain on the video.” YouTube creates a new caption track for the video after the stream, and that track may differ from what viewers saw live.
Caption quality depends on the audio and speech. YouTube identifies poor sound quality, speech the system cannot recognize, overlapping speakers, and multiple languages spoken at the same time as possible problems. Check the live output when possible, and correct important names, figures, or instructions through an appropriate caption workflow rather than assuming automatic recognition is error-free.

Send captions you prepare or generate separately
If captions must be more reliable, support a language other than English, or meet an accessibility need that automatic captions do not meet, use a supplied caption feed. YouTube documents embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 captions and supported software that sends captions over HTTP.

- For the event workflow, obtain the signed caption-ingestion URL provided for that stream and configure the caption software to send its feed there.
- Set the broadcast delay required by YouTube’s event instructions: 30 or 60 seconds. The documented workflow allows one caption feed per stream entry point.
- Test the captions in the live output and confirm the language and timing before relying on them for the event.
YouTube lists Total Eclipse, Case CATalyst, Caption Maker, and StreamText.Net as supported software. Check the current YouTube instructions and the software’s own compatibility details when choosing an application; software availability and features can change.

The 608/708 standard can carry up to four language tracks, but YouTube says it currently supports only one caption track in the embedded workflow described in its Help guidance. Do not assume the standard’s full capacity means a YouTube stream can publish four embedded caption languages through this method.
What YouTube live translation means
YouTube’s ordinary live-stream Help guidance documents English automatic captions, not a general creator setting for automatically publishing translated tracks in any language. A viewer’s access to translated captions on a finished video should not be taken as a guarantee of translated captions during a live broadcast.

For developers: Google Cloud Live Stream API
Google Cloud’s Live Stream API documentation describes generated captions and translations for HLS and DASH streams. This is a developer configuration route, not a switch available to every YouTube creator in Studio. The documentation says AI-generated translation is supported in the us-west1 and europe-west1 locations; language availability is also tied to location. Confirm the current API requirements and supported languages before designing a workflow around it.

StreamTranslate advertises an OBS browser-source overlay that displays translated text as part of the broadcast image. Its product page describes the text as baked into the video. That makes it visually different from closed captions: viewers cannot turn the text off or select and restyle it as a caption track. Performance, accuracy, latency, language and price statements on a vendor page are vendor claims, not independently established measurements.

For viewers: a private browser overlay
Trippi describes a Chrome extension that listens to audio from the open browser tab and draws translated subtitles for that viewer. Its vendor says it does not work in YouTube’s native apps. This kind of tool is a personal viewing aid: it does not add translated captions to the creator’s stream or make them available to others. Check the extension’s current compatibility and privacy information before installing it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check these details before choosing
- Who needs captions? A creator-supplied track serves the broadcast audience; a browser overlay serves only the viewer using it.
- Does text need to be selectable? Closed captions can be handled as a caption track; burned-in text is part of the video picture and cannot be switched off as a track.
- Which spoken and translated languages are required? Native YouTube live automatic captions are English-only according to YouTube Help. Other approaches have their own language and location limits.
- How much latency is acceptable? YouTube’s native automatic-caption workflow is documented for normal latency, not low or ultra-low latency. The event caption workflow specifies a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay.
- Must captions remain after the event? YouTube says its live automatic captions do not remain on the finished stream. Confirm how a supplied caption workflow will be represented on the resulting video.
- How important are correction and human review? Automatic recognition can fail on poor audio, overlapping speakers, unrecognized speech, or simultaneous languages. For critical information, arrange a workflow that allows checking or correcting captions.
- Will the setup work with your encoder and delivery format? Embedded 608/708 and HTTP caption delivery are distinct methods. Google Cloud’s documented route is for HLS and DASH. Verify compatibility rather than assuming a tool works with every encoder or protocol.
Troubleshoot missing or incorrect captions
- The automatic-caption option is missing: Confirm you are editing the individual live stream in Studio, check whether the feature has rolled out to your channel, and verify normal latency. YouTube Help notes that fewer than 1,000 subscribers may be a rollout eligibility issue.
- No live captions appear: Confirm captions are enabled for that stream and the spoken language is English. Check audio clarity and avoid overlapping speakers or multiple languages at once where possible.
- Captions are inaccurate: Listen for low or distorted audio and speech the system may not recognize. Improve the audio source if needed, but do not assume a microphone alone will solve recognition errors. Review critical wording and use a supplied caption workflow when accuracy matters.
- Captions disappear after the stream: This is expected for YouTube’s live automatic captions. YouTube creates a new VOD caption track after the event, and it may differ from the live version.
- The embedded caption feed does not arrive: Recheck the signed ingestion URL, the caption software’s delivery configuration, the required broadcast delay, and the one-feed-per-stream-entry-point constraint in YouTube’s current event instructions.
- A viewer’s translation overlay is absent: Check whether the browser extension supports the current browser and playback setup. A browser-side tool may not work in YouTube’s native apps, as Trippi states.
