To make a graphic clickable, attach a link in the design or publishing tool and deliver it in a format that preserves interactivity. For a batch of designs, Canva Bulk Create can populate designs from rows of data, but its documentation does not establish that a URL column can assign a different hyperlink to each graphic. If each graphic needs its own destination, verify that behavior in the current editor or use a workflow that lets you set and test each link.
Choose the right output before adding links
The delivery format determines whether a link can survive. A linked graphic in an editable design is not automatically a clickable graphic after export. Decide where the audience will open it, then attach links using a tool and output that support that kind of interaction.
| Where people will interact | Practical approach | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| PDF handout or catalog | Add a link to the relevant design element and export a non-flattened PDF. | Flattening merges the design into an image and removes interactive elements. |
| Live website | Make the graphic or its containing element a link in the site builder or website. | A PNG or JPG placed on a page is not clickable unless the page supplies a link around it. |
| Prototype | Add a hotspot or interaction with the intended destination. | A prototype interaction is separate from a hyperlink embedded in an image file. |
| Standalone PNG, JPG, or MP4 | Use the file as a visual asset and place it within a linked context if needed. | These static exports do not preserve Canva hyperlinks; social-media posts likewise do not preserve them. |
For Canva specifically, links can be attached to images and other elements, but Canva says hyperlinks work in PDF exports only when the PDF is not flattened. Its documented links do not work in PNG, JPG, MP4, or social-media posts. A clickable design element and a clickable image file are therefore different things.
Canva: link a graphic and export an interactive PDF
- Select the element: Open the design and select the image or other object that should be clickable.
- Set its destination: Add the link to that element and confirm the destination is correct. If the design has several separate calls to action, link each intended element rather than relying on the whole page to behave as one.
- Export as PDF: Choose a PDF export that is not flattened. Avoid any option or later processing step that merges the design into a single image.
- Test the exported file: Open the actual PDF in a reader and click each linked graphic. Confirm both that the click target covers the intended area and that the destination opens correctly.
If the required delivery is a PNG or JPG, adding a link in the Canva editor will not make that downloaded file itself interactive. Put the image inside a webpage, email, or other supported linked context instead, and test that context after publishing.

Canva Bulk Create: what scales, and what remains unconfirmed
Bulk Create connects data columns to design placeholders and uses rows to generate variations. Canva’s current help documentation describes selecting up to 300 rows and 150 data fields in the workflow; it also recommends previewing the variations before creating the batch. The feature is described as available on desktop to Canva Pro, Canva Teams, Canva Business, Canva for Enterprise, Canva Education, and Canva for Nonprofits users.
The key distinction is between generating the artwork and assigning an interactive destination. Canva documents data connections for text and image elements, but that documentation does not establish that a URL column maps to the hyperlink on each row’s graphic. Do not assume that putting a URL in a spreadsheet will make each generated image link to its corresponding URL.
A cautious bulk workflow
- Prepare the data: Keep one row per variation and use clear column names for content that will populate placeholders. If destinations vary by row, include the intended URL in the data, but treat it as a candidate input rather than proof that a link will be assigned.
- Connect content to placeholders: In Canva Bulk Create, connect the relevant data fields to the design elements they are intended to populate.
- Preview variations: Inspect representative rows and check for text overflow, wrong images, missing values, and layout changes before generating the full set.
- Verify hyperlink behavior separately: Generate a small sample first. Open the editor’s resulting designs, inspect the link on each graphic, and export a non-flattened PDF if that is the delivery format.
- Test destinations at scale: After generation and export, click every destination in the delivered artifact or use a repeatable review checklist. Do not publish the batch until you have confirmed that each intended graphic points to the right place.
If the live editor does not expose a dependable per-row link assignment, use Bulk Create for the visual variations and handle link assignment in a separate, verifiable step. For a large catalog, that may mean a controlled manual pass or building the final output in a website or publishing system whose link model explicitly supports the needed data mapping.

Figma: distinguish editor links, prototype hotspots, and site links
In Figma Editor, direct links on image and vector objects are not supported. Prototype hotspots provide an interaction layer instead. Figma documents applying interactions to multiple selected objects when they share a destination, which can reduce repetitive setup for a group that should all lead to the same place.
For a prototype
- Select the object or objects that should respond to a click.
- Use prototype interactions to define the hotspot and its destination.
- If applying the same destination to multiple selected objects, check that each hotspot covers the intended graphic area.
- Preview the prototype and test each hotspot rather than assuming the canvas selection matches the final clickable region.
When every graphic needs a different destination, the same-destination bulk interaction does not solve the per-graphic mapping problem by itself. Assign and check each destination individually unless your current Figma workflow provides a verified data-driven method.
For a published Figma Site
Figma Sites supports links on selected site elements. A selected layer or object can link to another page, an external site, a previous page, or an anchor. After publishing, test the actual site at its responsive breakpoints: layout changes can affect where a link sits and what area visitors can click.

Quality-check the complete batch
Review the final deliverable, not just the design canvas. Exporting, flattening, publishing, or placing an image inside another system can change whether a link works and how large its click target is.
- Format: Confirm that the final PDF is not flattened, or that a live page/prototype supplies the intended interaction. A static image file alone is not an interactive link.
- Coverage: Check that the clickable area covers the intended graphic and does not spill onto neighboring content.
- Destination: Open every link, especially where the URL differs by row. Confirm that it is the correct page and not a copied destination from another variation.
- Batch integrity: Compare a sample against the source data, then perform a complete link check before distributing a high-stakes catalog or campaign.
- Responsive behavior: For a site, check the published design at the breakpoints your audience will use.
- Final artifact: Retest after any export, compression, conversion, or publishing step that could flatten the design or alter the link layer.
Common failures and how to fix them
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The image looks linked in the editor but cannot be clicked in the downloaded file. | The output is PNG, JPG, MP4, a social post, or a flattened PDF. | Use a non-flattened PDF where supported, or place the image in a web page or other linked context. |
| Every generated variation opens the same page. | The link may have been applied once to a shared element, or per-row URL mapping was assumed rather than verified. | Inspect the generated designs and explicitly validate each destination. Use a separate link-assignment process if row-specific mapping is unavailable. |
| A Figma image or vector has no direct link control. | Figma Editor does not directly link image and vector objects. | For a prototype, add a hotspot interaction. For a published site, add a link to the site element. |
| A PDF link works in one copy but not another. | One version may have been flattened or converted after export. | Check the exact file being delivered and export or regenerate a non-flattened PDF, then retest it. |
| The right destination opens, but clicking the graphic misses. | The hotspot or link area does not match the visible graphic, or the published responsive layout changed its position. | Adjust the target area and test the published artifact at the relevant screen sizes. |
| A bulk batch contains wrong images or clipped text. | Data values or layouts vary more than the template can accommodate. | Preview representative variations, correct the source data or template, and regenerate before assigning or approving links. |

Keeping a maintainable link workflow
For recurring campaigns or catalogs, keep the source data, generated designs, and destination checks connected by a stable identifier such as a product or campaign ID. That makes it easier to trace a broken link back to a row or asset without relying on visual memory. Keep a record of the output format and any flattening or conversion step, since those determine whether interactive links remain available.
Choose the tool based on what must be interactive. Canva is a fit when the target is a linked design element in a supported PDF; Bulk Create can generate data-driven visual variations, but its documented behavior does not settle per-row hyperlink assignment. Figma prototype hotspots are appropriate for interactions in a prototype, and Figma Sites can link site elements. A live web page may be the better final surface when the graphic needs a click target that works independently of a PDF viewer.
