To add a link in WordPress, either attach a URL to selected text or content with the Link control, or insert an Embed block for a URL WordPress supports. These are different from a metadata-based link card: if the native embed does not create the preview you want, a link-card plugin may be an option.
Choose the right kind of link

Embed a supported URL with WordPress
- Copy the URL of the content you want to display.
- In the post or page editor, open the block inserter and search for Embed. Alternatively, type
/embedin a new paragraph and press Enter. - Paste the URL into the Embed block and click Embed.
- Inspect the result in the editor. The generic Embed block may transform into an embed associated with the content provider.
- Preview the post or page before publishing to check how the embed appears on the front end.
Embedding depends on whether WordPress can display content from that destination. The WordPress embed instructions cover public WordPress posts and recommend trying another URL or converting the URL to a regular link if the chosen post cannot be embedded.
Add a regular hyperlink instead
- Select the text, image, button, or other supported block content you want to make clickable.
- Choose the Link control, or press Ctrl+K on Windows or ⌘+K on Mac.
- Paste the full destination address, including
https://, and apply it. WordPress checks the URL format, but that check does not confirm the destination exists or loads. - Use the link popover to edit or remove the link. Depending on the block, options may include opening the destination in a new tab or setting the link to nofollow.
A link can be attached to selected content; it is not the same as an embed or a designed preview card. The exact controls available can vary by block, as described in WordPress’s Link control documentation.

Why pasting a URL may not create a card
Pasting a URL on a new line may produce an Embed block or a preview, depending on the URL. It is not a guarantee that any arbitrary destination will become a designed content card. If you want a clickable link rather than embedded content, use the Link control; if you want a consistent metadata-based card, consider a suitable plugin.

Before relying on a plugin, check its current maintenance and WordPress version compatibility, review the permissions it requests, and test its output on a draft or staging page. A card also depends on the destination making suitable metadata available. The directory descriptions alone do not establish universal compatibility or guarantee how a card will look on your site.
