Add like reactions to WordPress posts with Jetpack or WP ULike. Jetpack provides a Like setting and a Like block; WP ULike can place buttons automatically or let you insert one with a block or shortcode. Choose based on how visitors should vote, which content types need reactions, and how you manage your theme and caching.
Choose a reaction method

For a straightforward Like feature integrated with Jetpack, use Jetpack. If you need guest voting or want to choose between automatic and manual placement, WP ULike offers those documented controls. Check the behavior on your own theme and content types before enabling reactions site-wide.
Add Jetpack Likes
Classic-theme settings
- In your WordPress dashboard, open Jetpack → Settings → Sharing.
- Find the Like buttons setting and enable Add like buttons to your posts and pages.
- Open a public post on the front end and confirm that the button appears and behaves as expected.
Jetpack says this setting can show Likes on posts, pages, and public custom post types that support comments. The documented type settings apply to sites that are not using a full site editor theme. See Jetpack’s Likes instructions.
Block-theme sites
On a block theme, add Jetpack’s Like block in the Site Editor. To show the button across posts, place it in the relevant template, such as Single Posts, rather than adding it separately to every post. Jetpack’s Like block guide explains the block and the data the feature uses.

Add WP ULike reactions
Install and enable automatic display
- Go to Plugins → Add New, search for WP ULike, then install and activate it. The vendor’s install guide describes the free plugin and its features.
- Open WP ULike → Settings → Content Types → Posts.
- Enable Automatic Display, select a button template and position, then save.
- Visit a single post on the front end and check that the button appears in the intended place. You can also review the plugin’s Statistics.

Choose which content types get buttons
In the Posts settings, the documented Singular and Post Types options act as an allowlist. Add page or a custom post type if it should also have buttons; do not assume that enabling posts automatically covers every type of content. Review the vendor’s Posts Settings documentation.

Insert a button manually
Instead of automatic display, insert the ULike Button block where you want the reaction. The shortcode [wp_ulike] adds a button, while [wp_ulike id="123"] targets a specific item. Refer to the shortcodes reference for details.
Use one placement method for a given post. If automatic display and a manually inserted block or shortcode both apply, the page can show duplicate buttons. Turn off Automatic Display for that content type when using manual placement.

Visitor access and moving a site
Jetpack requires a visitor to be logged into WordPress.com to use its Like button. Its documentation also says Likes attach to the specific URL and cannot be migrated between sites. If anonymous voting or portability matters, account for that before choosing Jetpack. WP ULike documents a guest-voting option, but confirm the setting on your installation.
Jetpack data disclosure
Jetpack’s Like block documentation lists data used for site owners, users, and visitors, including IP address, WordPress.com user ID and username, connected site ID, post ID, user agent, timestamp, browser language, and country code. It also says the feature tracks when and which user likes or receives a Like on a post. Review that disclosure and assess your site’s privacy obligations for the jurisdictions where you operate.
Troubleshoot missing buttons or stale counts
- Jetpack button stays on “Loading…”: Jetpack identifies Cloudflare Rocket Loader and JavaScript minification by cache or optimization plugins as possible causes. Test whether disabling the relevant optimization resolves the issue, then adjust its configuration as appropriate. See Jetpack’s troubleshooting notes.
- WP ULike button does not appear: Check that Automatic Display is enabled for the content type and review the page filters. A post-type allowlist that omits the content type can prevent display.
- WP ULike count does not update: Check the plugin’s caching option; its setup guide recommends enabling Site uses caching when counts do not behave as expected. These are troubleshooting steps, not evidence that every cache setup causes a problem. See WP ULike’s setup guide.
- Two buttons appear: Check whether automatic display and a block or shortcode are both adding reactions, then keep the method you want and disable the other.
When to consider another plugin
The WordPress.org listing for LikeBtn describes support for posts, pages, comments, WooCommerce products, BuddyPress activities and members, bbPress content, UltimateMember profiles, and custom post types. It describes a commercial plugin with a seven-day trial that switches to a free plan afterward. Those are listing claims, not independent compatibility or performance test results; verify that its current features fit your site before installing it.
