In WordPress’s Block Editor, add an Image block, then upload a file, choose one from the Media Library, insert an image URL, or drag an image into the editor. Set alternative text based on the image’s purpose, and add a caption or adjust presentation when it helps. A featured image is set separately in the post settings sidebar, and how it appears depends on your theme.

Add an image in the Block Editor

  1. Open the post in the Block Editor and add an Image block where you want the image to appear.
  2. Choose how to add the image: upload a file from your device, select an existing image from the Media Library, or use the option to insert from a URL. You can also drag an image into the editor.
  3. If you copy an image from a document, check whether the editor offers an option to upload it to the Media Library. Saving a local copy can prevent the post from depending on the original host.
  4. After insertion, use the block controls to set alternative text and make any useful presentation adjustments.

Images added while composing a post are managed in the Media Library. See WordPress’s Image block guide and Use Images guide for the documented controls and media workflow.

Choose between a Media Library image and an image URL

Method What to consider
Upload or select from the Media Library The image is stored with your site’s media, so the post does not rely on the original file continuing to be available at another host.
Insert from a URL The post depends on the remote image remaining available. WordPress warns that the image may stop displaying if it is moved, deleted, or no longer shared.

Use only images you have permission to use. If you choose a remote image, consider uploading a copy to your Media Library when you have the rights and want to avoid relying on the external file.

Set alternative text for the image’s purpose

For an informative image, write alternative text that conveys its relevant content or purpose in the context of the post. If an image is purely decorative and adds no meaningful information or function, mark it as decorative so assistive technologies can ignore it.

Alternative text entered on an image block applies to that image in the specific post or page. Alternative text saved with an image in the Media Library provides a default when you insert that image elsewhere. Review the text in context each time: the same image can serve a different purpose in a different post.

Adjust the image’s presentation

  • Caption: Add one when a label, credit, or explanation will help readers. A caption is separate from alternative text.
  • Size and alignment: Resize or align the image to suit the content and layout.
  • Resolution: Choose a resolution that works with the theme and the original file. The available result depends on the image you uploaded and the theme’s support.

WordPress’s Image block documentation says that edits create new image files, leaving the original in the Media Library. Consult the Image block guide for its image editing controls.

Set a featured image separately

A featured image is a post-level setting, not an image inserted into the body. In the post settings sidebar, use the featured-image control to upload or select an image. The active theme determines how it is used; many themes display featured images on a home page or blog index, but the appearance and placement vary. WordPress documents this setting in its Page/Post Settings sidebar guide.

If you use the Classic Editor

The Classic Editor has a separate image-insertion workflow. Its documented dialog lets you choose an image from the Media Library and set alternative text, a caption, alignment, link behavior, and image size. Follow the Classic Editor image instructions; its controls and labels are not necessarily the same as those in the Block Editor.
