To show hymn lyrics over prerecorded worship videos in a continuous YouTube livestream, build the picture in OBS Studio: loop one recording or a playlist, add a text overlay for the lyrics, then send OBS to YouTube with an encoder stream key. Preview the scheduled stream before broadcasting. The key limitation is rights: putting lyrics on screen or owning a recording does not by itself clear the composition, lyrics, or recording for livestream use.
What you need before setting up the stream
- A church YouTube channel with livestreaming enabled. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave this until broadcast time. YouTube’s livestreaming setup instructions explain the requirement.
- A computer running OBS Studio and the prerecorded video file or files. YouTube identifies OBS as open-source video recording and livestreaming software. No particular computer model or minimum specification is established here; test the actual scene on the machine you intend to use.
- If you want a rotating playlist in OBS, VLC installed as well. OBS’s VLC Video Source depends on VLC.
- Rights for every recording, composition, lyric text, and arrangement used in the stream, including the relevant territories and online use.
Set up recorded video and lyrics in OBS
1. Create a scene for the stream
In OBS, create a scene for the church broadcast. Add a Media Source for one local recording. In its properties, enable Loop if you want that file to repeat. OBS documents Media Source playback and looping in its Media Sources guide.
2. Choose how recordings repeat
For a single video, a looping Media Source is the simplest option. For several recordings in sequence, add a VLC Video Source, select the files for its playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. This approach requires VLC to be installed. Confirm the order and playback behavior in a test before relying on it for a continuous service. See OBS’s VLC Video Source guide.

3. Add lyrics as a visible overlay
Add an OBS Text Source and enter the lyric lines you want displayed. Position the text where it does not cover important parts of the footage. Use a size and contrast that remain readable on the brightest and darkest scenes, and preview it at the output size rather than judging only from the OBS workspace. OBS’s Text Sources guide describes the source options.

A static text overlay gives you design control, but it will not advance in time by itself. For changing lyrics, update the text as needed during production, or prepare appropriately timed text. OBS’s VLC source also supports subtitles; use that when a synchronized subtitle track suits the material. A visible lyric overlay and accessibility captions are separate production elements.
Connect OBS to YouTube and test before going live
- Enable livestreaming: verify the channel is eligible and livestreaming is enabled in YouTube. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s setup instructions.
- Create or schedule an encoder stream: in YouTube Studio, start the livestream setup flow and choose the encoder route. YouTube provides a stream URL and stream key for the encoder. Follow the current YouTube encoder setup instructions and keep the key private like a password.
- Enter the stream details in OBS: open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter or connect the stream key as prompted. Do not share screenshots or files that expose it.
- Start the OBS output and inspect YouTube’s preview: check that the video is moving, lyrics are visible and legible, the playlist or loop behaves as intended, and audio reaches YouTube at a suitable level. YouTube recommends advance setup and preview in Live Control Room; consult its streaming tips.
- Go live only after the checks pass: monitor the stream during the broadcast. A loop option repeats media; it does not ensure that the computer, OBS, power, or internet connection will stay available.
Lyric overlays, subtitles, and captions are not interchangeable
A lyric overlay is text composited into the video picture, such as an OBS Text Source. Timed subtitles are synchronized text associated with the media. Live captions communicate spoken or sung audio accessibly and have separate delivery requirements. YouTube says live captions must be embedded in the video or sent through supported software; its subtitle documentation also describes timed subtitle files such as UTF-8 SRT. Review YouTube’s live caption guidance and subtitle file guidance if accessibility captions are needed. Providing on-screen lyrics alone should not be treated as a substitute for captions.

Clear rights before using hymns and recordings
Lyrics added to a video do not grant rights to the underlying hymn, the lyric text, or the sound recording. A recording bought or downloaded for personal listening is not automatically cleared for a worldwide livestream. Check the permissions for the exact song, words, recording, arrangement, territory, platform, and continuous replay with the relevant rights holders or licensors.

YouTube says it scans livestreams for third-party content and may warn the broadcaster, interrupt the stream, or terminate it if such content is identified. A rights owner that licenses content may need to allowlist the channel through Content ID to prevent interruptions. Read YouTube’s live-streaming content guidance.

YouTube’s Livestream Terms and Conditions place responsibility on the provider to hold necessary rights for worldwide use of live content, including music licensing rights. YouTube also notes that describing music as “free” does not prevent a Content ID claim; its music guidance recommends public-domain music or music for which permission has been obtained and points to Audio Library and Creator Music subject to their terms and availability. Those resources do not establish that a particular hymn, arrangement, or recording is cleared for a church’s livestream. Do not assume a general church streaming license covers every recording, lyric, or nonstop replay; verify the scope of the specific license.

With OBS, the computer must keep running the scene and sending its output, and the connection must keep delivering it to YouTube. Plan who will watch the stream and respond to power, computer, encoder, network, or YouTube interruptions. YouTube recommends using a reliable network and checking stream quality, but its guidance does not promise uninterrupted availability. A source set to loop is not a recovery plan.
