YouTube’s built-in automatic captions for live streams are available in English only, so they will not generate Hindi subtitles for a Hindi podcast. To show Hindi captions during the broadcast, use a separate Hindi speech-to-text tool and send its captions to YouTube through a supported caption workflow. Alternatively, display text as an overlay in the video—but that is visible text, not viewer-selectable closed captions.

Choose how viewers should see Hindi captions

There are two different ways to put words on a live stream. Choose based on whether viewers need captions they can turn on and off, or whether text simply needs to be visible in the picture.

  • Closed captions: Supply caption data to YouTube, either embedded in the outgoing stream as EIA 608/CEA 708 captions or through supported caption software and YouTube’s caption-ingestion workflow. Viewers can select the caption track. YouTube says, “To add captions to your live stream, you need to send captions to YouTube.” YouTube’s live caption requirements document the delivery methods and currently allow one caption track in this workflow.
  • Burned-in or open captions: Render text as an OBS text source or otherwise place it over the video. The words appear in the picture for everyone, but viewers cannot switch them off as a caption track. An OBS plugin may offer this kind of display; check its current documentation and configuration at OBS-captions-plugin.

For a Hindi podcast, first verify that the speech-recognition engine can handle the Hindi variety, accents, names and Hindi-English code-switching in your actual recording. YouTube’s caption documentation establishes delivery options, not which third-party Hindi recognizer is most accurate.

Set up Hindi closed captions for YouTube Live

1. Create or select the live stream

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create a stream or select the one you intend to use.
  2. Get the stream URL and stream key from the stream setup. Enter them in your encoder, such as OBS, and connect the podcast’s audio and video sources. YouTube’s encoder instructions are at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

2. Select a caption-delivery route

If your encoder and caption generator support embedded captions, enable closed captions for the stream and select Embedded 608/708. Configure the encoder or captioning software to embed EIA 608/CEA 708 caption data in the outgoing stream. If you use caption software that sends captions separately, follow YouTube’s supported ingestion workflow: the software sends caption data using HTTP POSTs to the captions ingestion URL supplied for the stream.

Do not assume that software which recognizes speech can also deliver captions to YouTube. Confirm that the specific version and configuration supports the delivery method you plan to use, and that it can provide Hindi text to that method.

3. Add a separate Hindi speech-to-text source

YouTube’s built-in live automatic captions do not provide Hindi: its help page says, “Automatic captions for live streams are available in English only.” The live feature is described as rolling out to eligible English channels and is limited to normal latency, so it may not appear on every channel. Hindi captions for regular uploaded videos do not mean Hindi captions are available from YouTube’s live automatic-caption feature. See YouTube’s automatic-caption guidance.

  • Seamless integration with other devices supporting NDI/SRT protocols.
  • Suitable for applications such as YouTube live streaming, content sharing, and surveillance recording.
  • Supports multiple encoding methods for different scenarios: RTSP/RTMP/HLS/UDP.

Instead, connect a separate speech-to-text caption generator to your chosen delivery route. Options to investigate include a captioning service or an OBS speech-recognition plugin. For example, LocalVocal’s project documentation describes local recognition or translation, YouTube caption posting and text-file output. These descriptions do not establish Hindi recognition support or accuracy for your setup. Check the present build, dependencies, language options and configuration before relying on it. YouTube also names StreamText.Net as a cloud-based caption delivery system compatible with speech-to-text platforms, but the cited guidance does not establish that it accepts a particular Hindi recognizer’s output or specify its current language coverage or pricing.

4. Rehearse with the real show setup

Run a private or otherwise suitable rehearsal using the same encoder, caption software, microphone mix and stream configuration you will use on air. Confirm that Hindi text reaches YouTube, appears for a viewer, and stays aligned with the speech. Check whether the workflow sends a selectable caption track or merely places text over the video. Test Hindi-English switching, names, multiple speakers and pauses rather than relying on a brief single-speaker sample.

5. Review the live result and archive separately

Have someone monitor captions while the podcast is live, if possible. Automated transcription can misrepresent accents, dialects, pronunciation or noisy speech; correct important names and technical terms where the workflow permits. YouTube notes that its built-in live automatic captions do not remain on the ended stream and that VOD captions may differ. That note concerns YouTube’s built-in live captions; do not assume the same behavior for every external caption workflow. Check the archived video separately and correct or add captions there if needed.

  • Hindi and code-switching: Test the actual Hindi variety, common English terms, names and speakers heard on the show.
  • Caption type: Establish whether the tool sends selectable closed captions to YouTube or only renders text into the video.
  • YouTube compatibility: Confirm the exact ingestion method—embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 or supported caption software posting to YouTube—and that your encoder and caption source work together.
  • Delay and synchronization: Check how far captions trail conversation and whether the offset remains stable during a full rehearsal.
  • Multiple speakers: Test interruptions and overlapping voices; recognition may struggle when speakers talk over one another.
  • Corrections and reuse: Find out whether you can edit recognition errors during the stream and whether caption text can be retained or corrected for the archived video.

Troubleshoot missing, inaccurate or delayed Hindi captions

No Hindi captions appear

  • Cause: You expected YouTube’s built-in live captions to generate Hindi. That feature is English-only.
  • Fix: Add a separate Hindi-capable recognition source, then configure it to deliver captions using a supported YouTube workflow. Verify both recognition and delivery in rehearsal.

Text appears in OBS but viewers cannot turn captions on

  • Cause: The words are an OBS overlay or open captions, not a closed-caption track sent to YouTube.
  • Fix: If selectable captions are required, configure embedded 608/708 data or compatible caption software using YouTube’s ingestion workflow. An overlay can remain a deliberate alternative when selectable captions are not needed.

Captions do not reach YouTube

  • Cause: The caption source may not support the selected delivery method, or the encoder and caption software may not be configured to send the same kind of caption data.
  • Fix: Recheck the YouTube stream setup, caption ingestion configuration and encoder settings. Test with the exact stream and software versions intended for the broadcast.

Hindi words are wrong or keep changing

  • Cause: Recognition may not handle the speaker’s accent, dialect, pronunciation or code-switching; noisy audio and overlapping speakers also reduce caption quality.
  • Fix: Use a clean, consistent microphone signal, reduce competing audio, and ask speakers to avoid talking over one another. Review key names and terminology in rehearsal and correct output where possible. YouTube identifies poor sound, unrecognized speech, overlapping speakers and simultaneous languages as factors in caption failures; see its automatic-caption guidance.

Captions lag behind the conversation

  • Cause: Recognition and delivery introduce delay, or the chosen tool may not keep captions synchronized under the show’s conditions.
  • Fix: Measure the delay during a full rehearsal, check the tool’s timing controls and confirm the offset remains stable with the actual audio mix. The cited YouTube guidance does not establish a universal delay for third-party Hindi caption systems.

Live captions disappear from the archive

  • Cause: You may be relying on YouTube’s built-in live automatic captions, which YouTube says do not remain on the ended stream. VOD captions may differ.
  • Fix: Review the archived video after the broadcast and add or correct captions there as needed. Do not assume an external live caption workflow behaves the same way; verify its archive handling separately.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a Hindi podcast stream built from an uploaded recording or playlist, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube stream running from the cloud. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams the files as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. The monthly plan is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos; it does not provide a live camera feed or generate Hindi subtitles, so arrange captions separately if your broadcast needs them.
