You can’t yet follow a verified, published setup guide for adding Gmail, Outlook, or another account to Thunderbird on iPhone. Mozilla’s October 1, 2026 post describes the native iOS app as in development and says its account flow is being built for services such as Google and Microsoft, but it does not provide setup steps or a release date.
Thunderbird for iOS account setup is not documented yet
Mozilla’s October 1, 2026 first look at Thunderbird for iOS presents the app as being developed for the App Store. It identifies Google and Microsoft as examples of services for the planned account flow, using the section heading “Adding account user flow with options for email services like Google and Microsoft.” That is a development update, not a published walkthrough for setting up an account.
The post does not state which other providers will be supported, what screens account setup will use, or whether users will be able to enter server settings manually. It also gives no public release date. Until Mozilla publishes iOS-specific instructions, there are no verified steps to give for Gmail, Outlook, or another account.
Don’t use desktop or Android directions on an iPhone
Thunderbird’s general getting-started guide covers Thunderbird on Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android phones. Its account setup directions do not establish the equivalent process for the iOS app. Menu names, sign-in screens, and server-setting options can differ by platform, so follow an iPhone guide only when Mozilla publishes one specifically for iOS.

Gmail sign-in: the security point to keep in mind
Google’s general guidance for third-party email clients recommends choosing “Sign in with Google” rather than sharing your Google username and password with an app. Google says Gmail messages and labels can sync with third-party clients. See Google’s instructions for adding Gmail to another email client.
This is general advice from Google, not confirmation of the exact sign-in screen, permissions, or authentication steps Thunderbird for iOS will use. The announcement does not say whether its iOS flow will offer a particular OAuth prompt or how it will handle multi-factor authentication.

Designed for convenience, its long-lasting battery life minimizes the need for frequent replacements, making it perfect for hard-to-reach areas and critical monitoring applications.
- IFTTT & Alexa Integration: trigger IFTTT applets based on high or low temperature set points reached (when device alerts). Voice query Alexa for the temperature (only; humidity not supported at this time). Triggering Alexa routines is not supported at this time.
What to check when Mozilla publishes the iOS guide
When official setup instructions become available, use them to confirm the details that remain unspecified:
- Which email providers and account types the app supports.
- Whether each provider uses an automatic sign-in flow or requires manual server settings.
- What authentication and multi-factor steps are required.
- What troubleshooting steps Mozilla recommends for sign-in or syncing problems.
For now, the official iOS announcement does not establish differences between Gmail and Outlook setup, or confirm support for any provider beyond naming Google and Microsoft as examples of the planned flow.
