In the PlayStation App, open Friends > Add Friend, search for the player, open the right profile, and select Add. You can then choose whether to share your real name and picture before selecting Send Request. Incoming requests and sent requests you want to cancel are managed from the relevant player profile or the Friends menu.
Add a friend in the PlayStation App
- Open the PlayStation App and select Friends.
- Select Add Friend, then search for the player using their online ID.
- Open the profile that matches the person you want to add. Check the online ID and profile before proceeding; similar names can make it easy to choose the wrong player.
- Select Add. When prompted, decide whether to share your real name and picture. This is an optional choice in the request flow.
- Select Send Request to submit the friend request.
PlayStation’s official instructions for adding and removing friends use these labels; wording or placement can differ slightly by app version or region.
Accept or decline incoming requests
To review requests other players have sent you, open Friends > Requests. Choose Accept to add the sender or Decline to reject the request.

Cancel a request you sent
If you no longer want a pending request to go through, open the recipient’s profile. Select Sent > Cancel Friend Request. This withdraws the request you sent.

Remove someone who is already a friend
Open that player’s profile and choose Friends > Remove as Friend. This is separate from cancelling a pending request, which uses the Sent control on the profile.
Why a player may not appear in search
Check the spelling and online ID first. Privacy settings can also affect what appears: PlayStation Support notes that “Search results may vary depending on a player’s privacy settings.” The same support guidance says your own privacy settings determine who can send you a friend request. It does not identify one setting that guarantees every player will appear in search, so changing a particular option may not resolve every discovery issue.

Use a console instead of the app
If you are already on a console, PlayStation provides separate routes: on PS5, use Game Base and the Friends or Friend Requests tabs; on PS4, open Friends and then Friend Requests. The exact options depend on whether you are adding someone or responding to a request. See PlayStation’s console and app instructions for the listed routes.
