Choose the result first, then install a plugin that matches it. The workflows below cover YouTube, Vimeo, and uploaded MP4 files.
Choose between a thumbnail image and a featured video
A static thumbnail is an ordinary featured image. It works well in archive cards, search results, and layouts that expect an image. A featured video replaces—or is displayed in—the location where your theme normally shows the featured image, so visitors may see a player instead.

Before installing anything
- Back up the site or work on staging, particularly if the site is live.
- Confirm which post type needs the feature: posts, pages, or a custom post type.
- Check whether the active theme or page builder actually renders a video in its featured-image slot. Plugin listings do not guarantee compatibility with every theme or builder.
- Keep the video URL, YouTube ID, or MP4 file ready.
Method 1: Automatically create a static featured thumbnail
Automatic Featured Images from Videos is designed for sites that want an image saved as the post’s featured image rather than a player replacing the image.
- In the WordPress dashboard, open Plugins > Add New.
- Search for Automatic Featured Images from Videos, install it, and activate it.
- Put a YouTube or Vimeo video within the first 4,000 characters of the post.
- Save or update the post.
- Check the post and an archive or card view to confirm that the generated image appears.
The documented behavior applies only when the post does not already have a featured image. An existing featured image is not overwritten. If no thumbnail appears, verify that the video is near the start of the content, that the URL is recognized, and that the post type is handled by the plugin and theme.

Method 2: Replace the featured-image area with a video player
Post Featured Video is the direct choice when visitors should see a playable video where the featured image normally appears.
- Go to Plugins > Add New, search for Post Featured Video, install it, and activate it.
- Open the plugin settings and enable the feature for the post type you use.
- Edit a post. In the classic editor, use the featured-video area; in Gutenberg, use the corresponding Featured Video area described by the plugin.
- Enter a valid YouTube or Vimeo URL, or upload an MP4 when using a supported upload option.
- Set a featured image as the plugin listing instructs, then save or update the post.
- Preview both the single-post page and archive/card views. Confirm that the player appears where intended and that layouts do not show a broken or duplicated image.
A malformed URL, an unsupported post type, or a theme that bypasses the normal featured-image output can prevent the replacement from appearing.

Method 3: Add a YouTube video with Vídeo Destacado
Vídeo Destacado uses a YouTube video ID and provides a thumbnail preview. It is useful when you want explicit control over where the video is rendered.
- Open Plugins > Add New, search for Vídeo Destacado, install it, and activate it.
- Open Settings > Vídeo Destacado and enable the modules you need.
- Edit the post and enter the YouTube video ID in the plugin’s meta box.
- Output the video with the
[video-destacado]shortcode, or call thevideo_destacado()template function in a theme template. - Preview the location where the shortcode or template function is used.
Using the template function may require theme-file changes, and the correct placement depends on your theme’s template structure.

Method 4: Import video details with VideographyWP
VideographyWP can import YouTube details and optionally replace the featured image with a video. Its setup requires a YouTube API key. The free-version documentation describes YouTube support; Vimeo and Dailymotion import features, along with WooCommerce product-video features, are listed as PRO capabilities.
- Install and activate Featured Video for WordPress – VideographyWP from Plugins > Add New.
- Open its setup screen and add the required YouTube API key.
- Configure whether imported videos should replace the featured image.
- Import or assign the video, save the post, and test the single-post and archive outputs with your active theme.
Check the result and troubleshoot common failures
The thumbnail or player does not appear
- Confirm the plugin is active and enabled for the post type being edited.
- Check that the video URL or YouTube ID is valid.
- For automatic thumbnails, move the YouTube or Vimeo embed within the first 4,000 characters.
- Inspect the theme or page-builder template; it may not render the plugin’s replacement output.
An old featured image remains
Automatic Featured Images from Videos intentionally leaves an existing featured image unchanged. Replace or remove that image manually if the post should receive a newly generated thumbnail.

The player works on the post but not in archives
Single-post and archive templates often render featured media differently. Test both views and adjust the theme placement, shortcode location, or template integration required by the selected plugin.
The plugin seems incompatible
Before relying on a plugin, review its current WordPress.org directory entry for tested WordPress and PHP versions, update recency, and active-install metadata. These are time-sensitive indicators, not guarantees of compatibility. Test on staging with the actual theme and builder.

Which method should you use?
- Choose Automatic Featured Images from Videos when archive cards need a normal image and the video itself does not need to play in the featured slot.
- Choose Post Featured Video when the featured-image position should become a YouTube, Vimeo, or MP4 player.
- Choose Vídeo Destacado when you use YouTube IDs and need shortcode or template-level placement control.
- Choose VideographyWP when YouTube metadata import and optional featured-image replacement are more important than a simple one-post setup.
