To get Dolby Atmos from a TV through a soundbar, connect the TV’s HDMI ARC or eARC port to the soundbar’s matching port, then enable the appropriate audio output settings and play Atmos content on a compatible service and device. If the TV has no ARC/eARC, connect an Atmos-capable source to the soundbar’s HDMI input and its HDMI output to the TV. The exact route depends on the ports and supported formats of your specific TV, soundbar, and source.

Check that every part of the setup supports Atmos

Before connecting cables, check the manuals for the exact TV and soundbar models. Confirm that the soundbar supports Dolby Atmos, which TV and soundbar ports support ARC or eARC, and which audio formats the TV can pass through on those connections. A port or an Atmos logo alone does not guarantee that every source will deliver Atmos through every device combination.

Atmos also depends on the playback source, streaming service, subscription plan, and individual title. Check that the device and service support Atmos, that your plan includes it where applicable, and that the title is explicitly marked Dolby Atmos. Dolby’s soundbar connection guide explains the supported connection routes; its Atmos content guidance covers content and device requirements.

Connect the soundbar using ARC or eARC

When both the TV and soundbar have compatible ARC or eARC ports, this is generally the simplest setup for audio from TV apps and devices connected to the TV.

ULTIMEA 5.1CH Surround Sound Bar System with Dolby Atmos, Poseidon M60
  • Simplified 5.1ch Dolby Atmos Setup: Enjoy immersive 4D sound with real Dolby Atmos and 5.1-channel audio. Five built-in speakers, including two side-firing drivers, create wide surround without rear speakers. Precision DSP ensures <0.5 ms latency for smooth, theater-like sound. Setup takes less than 1 minute.
  • Voice Clarity Enhancement: VoiceMX technology uses advanced DSP algorithms to isolate and enhance vocal frequencies in real time. Dialogue remains crisp and easy to follow by separating speech from background effects and music, even at low volumes or during intense scenes.
  • 300W Output with 6-Driver System: Featuring five precision-tuned full-range drivers and a dedicated wired wooden subwoofer, the system delivers up to 300W of peak power for bold, room-filling sound. With a frequency response of 45 Hz–18 kHz and a maximum SPL of 99 dB, it reproduces everything from subtle nuances to explosive cinematic effects.
  • 18 mm High-Excursion Driver: Powered by BassMX technology, the wired wooden subwoofer features a 18 mm high-excursion driver, a 5.3L tuned cabinet, and a high-density magnetic circuit. This design delivers deeper, tighter bass with greater air displacement and enhanced low-frequency performance—bringing more realism to every scene.
  • HDMI eARC for True Dolby Atmos: HDMI eARC supports up to 37 Mbps of bandwidth, unlocking the full potential of lossless Dolby Atmos 5.1-channel audio. Compared to standard ARC, eARC delivers richer surround effects and greater detail. CEC integration allows the TV and soundbar to work together with unified control.
  1. Locate the TV’s HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC and the soundbar port labeled TV ARC/eARC or similar. Follow the device manuals if the labels differ.
  2. Connect those two ports with an HDMI cable that meets the manufacturers’ requirements.
  3. On the TV, select the soundbar as the sound output. If the TV offers eARC, Atmos compatibility, or audio-format options, enable or choose them as recommended in its manual. Depending on the model, the appropriate output may be Auto or Pass-Through. Samsung’s instructions show one manufacturer’s settings; menu labels and options vary by brand. See Samsung’s audio device connection guidance.
  4. Play a title marked Dolby Atmos from a compatible source, then check the soundbar display or indicator for confirmation that it is receiving and decoding Atmos.

Dolby recommends eARC where available for broader audio-format support. Its connection article describes HDMI 2.0 as sufficient for ARC and HDMI 2.1 for eARC, but cable requirements depend on the equipment. Dolby describes HDMI 2.1 bandwidth as “up to 48 Gigabytes per second (Gbps)” in that article; this is its published specification claim, not a guarantee that any particular cable or device will provide Atmos. Check your product manuals before buying a replacement cable.

Connect through HDMI passthrough if the TV lacks ARC/eARC

This option requires a soundbar with an HDMI input and a dedicated HDMI output. It routes the source’s audio to the soundbar before video continues to the TV.

  4. Play Atmos-marked content and check the soundbar’s display or indicator for Atmos decoding. Also confirm that the video format is supported by the source, soundbar passthrough, and TV.

Dolby recommends connecting source devices directly to soundbar HDMI inputs when possible. See its Dolby Atmos home theater setup guide for source and bitstream guidance.

Choose the connection that fits your devices

Setup Use it when Connection What to verify
TV ARC/eARC The TV and soundbar have compatible ARC/eARC ports; useful for TV apps and sources connected to the TV. TV ARC/eARC port to soundbar ARC/eARC port. Atmos support and format passthrough for the specific TV, soundbar, source, and connection.
Soundbar HDMI passthrough The TV has no ARC/eARC, but the soundbar has an HDMI input and dedicated HDMI output. Atmos-capable source to soundbar HDMI input; soundbar HDMI output to TV HDMI input. Atmos support and compatible audio and video formats across the source, soundbar, and TV.

Use the manuals to decide between these routes, especially if you rely on TV apps rather than an external player. The cable version by itself cannot establish that the full setup supports Atmos.

Troubleshoot when you hear audio but not Atmos

If the soundbar plays sound but does not indicate Atmos, check the signal path from the content back to the soundbar:

  • Content: Confirm the title itself is marked Dolby Atmos. Availability can vary by title, service, device, and plan.
  • Source settings: For an external player, check whether its audio output should be set to Bitstream.
  • TV output: Check the selected sound output, ARC/eARC setting, and audio format or passthrough option. Use the TV manual because options and names differ.
  • Connection and input: Confirm that the HDMI cable runs between the intended ARC/eARC ports, or that the source is connected to the soundbar’s HDMI input for passthrough. Check that the soundbar is on the correct input.
  • Format support: Verify that each device supports Atmos on the chosen connection. Sony notes that unsupported equipment in the chain can result in Dolby Digital or Dolby Digital Plus output instead. See Sony’s Dolby Atmos troubleshooting guidance.

Position the soundbar without blocking its height speakers

If your soundbar uses upward-firing or other Atmos-enabled height speakers, keep the space between those speakers and the ceiling unobstructed. Dolby suggests placing the soundbar below the TV without blocking the picture or the soundbar’s speakers. Follow the placement directions for your specific model as well.
