To send a custom header to the page being screenshotted, set it in the screenshot provider’s target-page rendering options. A header used to authenticate your request to the screenshot API is separate; it is not automatically forwarded to the target website. The exact option name, encoding, and forwarding scope depend on the provider.
Keep API authentication separate from target-page headers
A screenshot request can involve two different HTTP exchanges:
- Your app to the screenshot service: may include an API key or other credentials that authorize use of the service.
- The service’s browser to the target page: may need a target-specific header, such as an
Authorizationbearer token or anX-Request-Id.
Putting a header on the first exchange does not establish that the screenshot service will send it on the second. Configure the header using the provider’s documented rendering option. For example, Screenshot API’s docs show Authorization: Bearer ... and X-API-Key for authenticating the API call, but do not establish that these configure headers sent to the page. Check the service’s API documentation for its target-header support.
Use the format your provider documents
There is no universal screenshot API parameter or encoding for target-page headers. These examples illustrate different formats and scopes; they are not interchangeable.

HTML/CSS to Image
HTML/CSS to Image documents a headers parameter for requests to the page specified by url. The requested URL’s origin is allowed by default. To allow another origin, use additional_header_origins. Headers are sent to subrequests such as CSS, images, and JavaScript only if include_headers_on_subrequests is enabled. Review its API documentation for the applicable request format and forwarding rules.
Screenshots.Dev
Screenshots.Dev documents a headers parameter containing semicolon-separated key-value pairs. For query-string use, URL-encode its value. Its documentation treats cookies separately from headers. See the Screenshots.Dev documentation for current syntax.

Build and verify a request safely
- Identify the target’s requirement. Confirm the exact header name and value expected by the page. Do not confuse a target-page token with the credential for your screenshot provider.
- Check the provider’s official reference. Find its target-render header option, whether it accepts GET, POST, or both, and the required encoding. Do not copy another provider’s parameter shape.
- Check where the header is sent. Determine whether it applies only to the initial page request, whether redirects or additional origins are allowed, and whether subresources receive it.
- Make a controlled capture. Test against a page and credential you control. Inspect the returned image or PDF and, where available, response diagnostics to determine whether the page loaded as intended.

Send target credentials only to the origin that needs them. If a provider supports origin allowlists or separate subrequest controls, use those rather than assuming the header stays on the original request. A page may load scripts, images, stylesheets, or follow redirects to other origins; consult the provider’s forwarding rules before enabling broader propagation.

Troubleshoot missing or rejected headers
- The page still asks you to sign in: Check that you set the target-render header option, not just the API authentication header. Verify the header name, value, and token format against the target site’s requirements.
- The main page works but an asset does not: The provider may not forward headers to subrequests by default. Check its subrequest setting and origin rules; avoid sending credentials to unrelated origins.
- A redirected page loses access: Header forwarding to redirect destinations can be restricted. Check the provider’s documented redirect and origin behavior before allowing additional destinations.
- The request fails to parse: Confirm the vendor’s expected structure and encoding. A URL-encoded semicolon-separated parameter is not the same as a JSON object or JSON array.
- The API returns a capture but the content is wrong: Confirm the target URL and whether the page needs additional cookies, client-side state, or a different authentication mechanism. A custom header alone may not satisfy the site’s access flow.
