To add a CSS animation in WordPress, give the target block a CSS class, define the animation with @keyframes, and apply it to that class in a CSS location that accepts complete rules. For a block theme, use Styles → Additional CSS for site-wide rules; use the block’s Advanced settings to add a class to one instance. The separate per-block Additional CSS field accepts declarations, not a full stylesheet.
Choose where to put the animation
The right place depends on whether the animation should affect one block, a block type, or the theme as a whole—and whether you are editing a site or developing a theme.

Add an animation to one block
1. Assign the block a class
- Select the block in the editor and open its settings sidebar.
- Expand Advanced and enter a distinctive name in Additional CSS class(es), such as
fade-in-on-load. Do not include the leading period in the class field.
This class identifies the block instance. The Advanced settings documentation describes a different field, also called Additional CSS, that accepts declarations and automatically targets a block. Do not paste a complete stylesheet into that declaration-only field.
2. Add the animation rule and keyframes
In a block theme, open the Site Editor, select Styles, and look for Additional CSS in the Styles page ellipsis menu. Add a selector rule and its keyframes there. WordPress documents this location for version 6.9; menu placement can differ by installed version and theme.

}The class selector must match the class you added, including spelling. This example keeps the content visible when reduced motion is requested: only the animation is enabled for people whose system preference allows motion. Preview the page and check that the target block animates without obscuring or delaying important content.
Where to find Additional CSS in different WordPress setups
The precise path depends on whether the site uses a block theme and on its WordPress version. The Styles overview says the site-wide custom CSS editor has been part of Styles since WordPress 6.2, and that WordPress 6.9 moved Additional CSS controls into the Styles page ellipsis menu. On a classic theme, custom CSS may instead be available at Appearance → Customize; WordPress documents that route as available starting with version 4.7. The Customizer route is theme-tied, so check the installed theme and version rather than assuming every dashboard has the same menu. Styles overview; Advanced Administration: Adding CSS.

Use theme files for maintained theme or block styling
Use theme.json for supported styles
If you develop a theme, prefer theme.json where it supports the styling need. WordPress recommends this approach to work with core, plugins, and user customizations. For a one-off animation that needs arbitrary CSS and keyframes, use a stylesheet location that accepts those rules rather than assuming a setting in theme.json can express every animation.
Register a stylesheet for substantial block-specific CSS
For a larger set of styles belonging to a particular block, the Theme Handbook describes placing CSS in a file and registering it with wp_enqueue_block_style() on init. WordPress can then load that block stylesheet when the block is used. This is more maintainable than accumulating a large, theme-specific stylesheet in an editor field.

Make motion accessible
The WordPress Block Editor Handbook states, “Animations should never block a user interaction.” It recommends honoring the operating system’s reduced-motion preference with CSS media queries; in React code, it also identifies useReducedMotion as an option. The handbook further advises against animating regions actively reporting content to assistive technology. WordPress Block Editor Handbook accessibility guidance.

- Keep important content available if the animation is disabled; avoid leaving it permanently hidden in its starting state.
- Use
@media (prefers-reduced-motion: no-preference)to apply motion only when the visitor has not requested reduced motion, or provide a reduced-motion override that removes or shortens it. - Do not make animation a prerequisite for using a control or understanding essential content.
