To add closed captions to prerecorded videos in a 24/7 kids’ YouTube stream, add a subtitle track to each source video in YouTube Studio before you use it in the loop. For a repeatable workflow, prepare a timed SRT or SBV file and upload it under that video’s Subtitles page. But do not assume those video captions will appear as closed captions on the live stream: the live encoder has a separate caption-delivery workflow, so test the actual live player with your chosen playout system.
How to add captions to each prerecorded video
- Prepare and review the transcript. Use the language spoken in the video and include relevant non-speech audio cues. Correct names and child-directed vocabulary carefully. YouTube warns that automatic captions can misrepresent speech because of accents, dialects, mispronunciations, background noise, silence, overlapping speakers, or unsupported languages. YouTube Help: automatic captions.
- Create a timed caption file, if possible. YouTube recommends SRT or SBV as practical basic formats. An SRT file should be plain UTF-8 and contain caption text with timecodes; basic SRT and SBV do not support styling markup. YouTube Help: supported subtitle and closed-caption files.
- Open the video’s subtitle settings. In YouTube Studio, go to Subtitles, select the video, choose Add language, then select Add under Subtitles.
- Choose how to provide the captions. Select Upload file for a timed SRT or SBV; select Auto-sync for transcript text without timings; or choose Type manually to enter and time captions in Studio.
- Save or publish, then review the track. Check that the language is correct, text matches the speech, and captions appear at the right times. Repeat for each source video and language track. You can also add subtitles during upload. YouTube Help: add subtitles and captions.
Which caption method should you use?
| Method | Best for | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Upload timed SRT or SBV | A video library with captions timed in an editor, or a repeatable production workflow | Timing, transcript accuracy, file encoding, and track language |
| Auto-sync transcript | Videos with an accurate transcript but no timestamps | The transcript language must match the speech and be supported. YouTube does not recommend auto-sync for videos over an hour or with poor audio quality. |
| Type manually in Studio | Short videos or targeted fixes | Allow time to check the full video for coverage and timing. |
| Automatic captions | A starting point when no caption file is ready | Availability and accuracy vary. Review and correct the track rather than treating it as guaranteed. |
YouTube’s Studio instructions describe these options at Add subtitles and captions; its file guidance covers formats at supported subtitle and closed-caption files. Auto-generated captions may be delayed or unavailable depending on audio and language conditions; review them before relying on them. YouTube Help: automatic captions.
Will captions on uploaded videos show during the live stream?
Not necessarily. A subtitle track attached to a video in YouTube Studio belongs to that uploaded video. The continuous live feed is delivered by an encoder, and YouTube’s live-caption guidance describes separate routes: embedded CEA-608/CEA-708 captions or supported caption software sending captions to YouTube over HTTP. The official guidance does not establish that every local or cloud 24/7 playout system reads each source video’s Studio subtitle track and emits synchronized captions in the live output. See YouTube Help: use automatic captioning and YouTube Help: live encoder settings.

- Check the selected encoder or cloud playout provider’s current documentation for per-video subtitle-track support and live caption output.
- Run a private or unlisted test stream, if available for your workflow, using a source video with a reviewed subtitle track.
- Open the live player as a viewer and verify that captions appear, stay synchronized through transitions between videos, and use the intended language.
- If captions do not appear, keep the Studio subtitle tracks for viewers of the uploaded videos, but configure a supported live caption feed or choose a playout system that documents and passes through the caption data you need.
YouTube’s encoder guidance discusses software and standalone hardware encoders and lists Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming. It does not establish caption pass-through behavior for every provider; confirm that specific capability directly with the service. YouTube Help: live encoder settings.

Set the audience correctly for kids’ content
In YouTube Studio, identify whether each video is made for kids, and set the live stream’s audience accurately as well. YouTube requires creators to make this audience designation; made-for-kids settings restrict features, including live chat. Do not build your caption workflow or viewer instructions around chat being available. YouTube Help: set your channel or video audience.
During upload, YouTube also provides fields for original video language and caption certification. Caption certification relates to certain content shown on U.S. television; it is not the same as uploading a subtitle track. YouTube Help: upload videos.

Common caption problems and fixes
- Captions are missing from the live player: Studio subtitles alone do not prove that the live encoder sends captions. Check the provider’s documentation, configure a supported live-caption route, and test the live player.
- Text appears at the wrong time: Review the SRT/SBV timecodes against the source video, or correct the Studio track. Retest the live output after any encoder or playlist changes.
- Names or words are wrong: Edit the transcript or automatic captions manually, especially names and vocabulary recognition systems may not know.
- Auto-sync does not work well: Check that transcript language matches the video’s spoken language. For a video over an hour or with poor audio, use a timed file or another workflow instead.
- Captions stop or drift at a video transition: Verify that the playout system handles caption data across each source change; test more than one video in sequence rather than checking only a single clip.
- Automatic captions have not appeared: They may be delayed or unavailable for the video’s language or audio conditions. Prepare and publish a reviewed track instead of assuming they will be ready.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube stream that keeps looping while your computer is off, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload your recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Its caption-track behavior is not established here, so confirm live caption delivery with StreamNeo and test the viewer-facing output before depending on it for closed captions.
