To send embedded captions to a YouTube live stream, open the stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, go to Settings > Setup > Closed captions, select Embedded 608/708, and save. Your encoder must also send EIA-608/CEA-708 caption data in the outgoing stream; choosing the YouTube setting alone does not create captions.
YouTube also documents a separate workflow in which supported software sends captions using HTTP POSTs. Its instructions cover live events rather than a special 24/7 mode, so test your chosen workflow during startup, normal operation, and any planned restart or stream boundary.
Choose how captions will reach YouTube
There are two documented paths. Pick one your caption source and encoder or software can actually provide, then verify captions in the live preview before relying on them.

Set up embedded 608/708 captions
- Open the stream: In YouTube Studio, create or open the encoder stream in Live Control Room.
- Find the caption setting: Open the stream’s Settings, select the Setup tab, and locate Closed captions.
- Choose the matching option: Select Embedded 608/708 and save.
- Configure your encoder: Set its caption output to EIA-608/CEA-708, sometimes labelled embedded. Make sure caption data is generated and carried in the outgoing stream. Depending on your setup, the encoder may read captions from a file or encode them in real time.
- Verify end to end: Check the Live Control Room preview and confirm that captions appear and viewers can enable them. Check stream health and messages while live.
The YouTube setting selects how it expects to receive captions; it does not supply caption text. YouTube says the 608/708 standard can support up to four language tracks, but YouTube currently supports one caption track for this embedded workflow.
Set up captions sent over HTTP
YouTube’s event instructions describe an alternative for supported software that sends captions through HTTP POSTs. Use this route only if your software supports YouTube’s workflow.

- In the stream’s Advanced settings, add the 30- or 60-second broadcast delay specified in YouTube’s event instructions.
- Turn on Closed captions and copy the Captions Ingestion URL.
- Configure the supported captioning software to send captions to that URL using its YouTube workflow.
- Verify caption visibility in the preview, then monitor the live stream and test again after any planned restart or boundary.
Check the current YouTube interface labels and your software’s instructions before going live; the documented procedure is for live events and does not establish a separate uninterrupted 24/7 configuration.
Plan for continuous operation and archives
YouTube’s caption setup guidance does not promise caption continuity across an uninterrupted 24/7 session or through stream restarts. Treat those as integration behaviors to test, not as guaranteed features. Test at startup, during the stream, and after any restart or transition you expect to use.

YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast will produce a single complete archive.
Troubleshoot missing or interrupted captions
- The setting is enabled, but no text appears: Confirm the encoder or captioning software is actually generating and sending caption data. The Live Control Room selection by itself does not create captions.
- Embedded captions do not appear: Check that YouTube is set to Embedded 608/708, the encoder sends EIA-608/CEA-708, and the data is carried in the outgoing stream. Verify visibility in the preview.
- HTTP captions do not appear: Confirm that the software supports YouTube’s HTTP POST workflow, that it is configured with the copied Captions Ingestion URL, and that the documented 30- or 60-second delay is set in Advanced settings.
- Captions disappear after a restart or transition: Recheck caption delivery at the new stream start and during operation. YouTube’s instructions do not guarantee caption continuity across restarts.
- You need more than one embedded caption track: YouTube currently supports one caption track for the embedded 608/708 workflow, even though the standard can support up to four language tracks.
