The simplest documented way to add a click-to-share quote box is the Better Click To Share WordPress plugin. Install and activate it from Plugins → Add New, insert its block (or use the [bctt] shortcode), and readers can open X with the quote and a link to your post prefilled.

What a click-to-tweet box does

A click-to-tweet box highlights a sentence or short passage inside your article. When a reader clicks it, X (formerly Twitter) opens a compose window containing the selected quote and a link to the page. The reader can edit the text before posting.

The feature is for creating a shareable quote. It is different from displaying an existing social post inside WordPress.

Install Better Click To Share

  1. Sign in to your WordPress dashboard.
  2. Go to Plugins → Add New.
  3. Search for Better Click To Share or shareable quote.
  4. Choose the Better Click To Share plugin, select Install Now, then select Activate.

Plugin names, screenshots and dashboard labels can change, so confirm that the listing is current before installing it on a production site.

Add a box with the block editor

  1. Open the post or page you want to edit.
  2. Place the cursor where the box should appear and open the block inserter with the + button.
  3. Search for the Better Click To Share block and insert it. You can also type /tweet in a new block to find it quickly.
  4. Enter the quote you want readers to share.
  5. Save or publish the post, then use the front-end preview to confirm that the box displays correctly.

The plugin listing describes the result as a styled quote box that opens X with the quote and the post link ready to post.

Use the shortcode instead

If you work in the HTML editor, a classic-editor field or a page builder, place the shortcode where WordPress processes shortcodes:

[bctt tweet="Your shareable quote here."]

Replace the sample text with your own quote. The plugin documentation says the shortcode can be used with page builders such as Elementor, Divi and WP Bakery, but verify that the current plugin and builder versions support the setup on your site.

Configure attribution and short links

  1. In the dashboard, go to Settings → Better Click To Share.
  2. Enter your X username if you want the share text to include a “via @you” attribution.
  3. If your installation exposes a short-URL option, configure it when you want the shared link to use a shorter address.
  4. Save the settings and test a box from the published page.

An X username is optional. Use the account name you actually want associated with the share, and check the final character count in X before publishing.

Block or shortcode: which should you choose?

Method Best for Advantages Things to check
Plugin block WordPress block editor users Visual insertion and editing without remembering shortcode syntax Confirm the block appears in the inserter and that your theme styles it acceptably
[bctt] shortcode Classic editor, reusable templates and supported page builders Can be placed directly in content and reused in builder layouts The target editor or builder must process WordPress shortcodes
WordPress Twitter Embed block Displaying an existing public post Embeds a post when you paste its public URL and choose Embed It does not create a new quote box for readers to share

Do not confuse click-to-share with a Twitter/X embed

WordPress’s Twitter Embed block is designed to show an existing public post. You paste that post’s URL into the editor and select Embed. A click-to-tweet box starts with text from your own article and creates a ready-to-share X composition. Use the embed block for displaying a post; use Better Click To Share for reader-generated sharing.

Alternatives in the WordPress directory

The WordPress.org click-to-tweet directory also lists plugins such as Social Snap, Click To Tweet and Share on Twitter Block. The directory is a list, not a comparative test. Before choosing an alternative, check:

  • Recent compatibility with your WordPress and PHP versions.
  • Whether it supports your editor or page builder.
  • Recent support activity and maintenance history.
  • Available styling controls and whether the output fits your theme.
  • Whether it still opens a usable X share flow rather than relying on obsolete Twitter behavior.

Test the box before publishing

  • View the page while logged out or in a private browser window.
  • Click the box and confirm that X opens instead of a blank or error page.
  • Check that the quote is complete, readable and attributed to the correct account when attribution is enabled.
  • Verify that the shared link points to the intended canonical post URL.
  • Test on a phone as well as a desktop browser; popup blocking, consent tools or script optimization can affect the handoff to X.

Troubleshooting

The block is missing

Confirm that Better Click To Share is activated, then reload the editor and search the block inserter again. If it remains unavailable, check whether a site-level plugin restriction or an outdated plugin version is involved.

The shortcode prints as text

The content area is not processing shortcodes. Move the shortcode into a WordPress content field or builder element that supports them, or use the plugin block in the block editor.

The box appears but X does not open

Test with browser extensions and popup blocking temporarily disabled. Also verify that your optimization or security plugin has not removed the share link’s required script or markup.

The quote or URL is wrong

Edit the block text or the tweet value in the shortcode, then clear any page cache and retest the published URL. If you enabled a short-link setting, confirm that the resulting destination still resolves to the correct post.

What this feature can—and cannot—promise

A click-to-tweet box makes sharing a specific passage easier by preparing the quote and page link. The available product documentation describes that functionality, but it does not establish a guaranteed increase in traffic, followers or engagement. Treat it as a publishing convenience and measure your own results if those outcomes matter.
