In a Next.js App Router project, keep the route and data fetching in a Server Component, then render the chart in a small Client Component when the chart library needs browser APIs, state, or event handlers. Install a React-compatible library, pass serializable data across the server/client boundary, give the chart a real size, and verify the production build. The examples below show a complete Chart.js implementation, a selective Apache ECharts setup, lazy loading, accessibility considerations, and fixes for common rendering errors.
1. Decide where the chart belongs
App Router pages and layouts are Server Components by default. That is useful for querying a database or calling an API without sending those credentials or data-fetching modules to the browser. A chart usually becomes a Client Component only at the point where it needs a browser canvas, resize observers, animation, pointer events, or React event handlers.
Do not mark the entire route with "use client" unless the whole route genuinely needs client behavior. A focused wrapper keeps the client JavaScript boundary small:
- Server Component: loads and validates data, handles authentication, and chooses the page layout.
- Client Component: owns the chart instance, interactive controls, tooltips, and resize behavior.
- Shared contract: plain serializable arrays and objects. Do not pass a database connection, class instance, function, or
Dateobject that the client library cannot consume.
App Router or Pages Router?
Find an app/ directory to confirm the App Router. The examples use app/page.tsx and app/components/RevenueChart.tsx. A Pages Router project can use the same client chart component from pages/index.tsx, but its data-loading APIs and file conventions differ.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Install a chart library
Install one library as a project dependency. Chart.js has a convenient automatic entry point and a more deliberate tree-shakeable integration. Apache ECharts supports broad imports as well as selective imports with an explicit renderer.
| Library | Install | Smallest practical starting point | What you must decide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chart.js | npm install chart.js react-chartjs-2 |
chart.js/auto through react-chartjs-2 |
Use automatic registration for speed of setup, or register only the controllers, elements, scales, and plugins your charts use for tree-shaking. |
| Apache ECharts | npm install echarts echarts-for-react |
Selective ECharts modules plus a renderer | Choose chart/component modules and Canvas or SVG rendering, then provide a container with dimensions. |
The official setup references are Chart.js installation, Chart.js integration, ECharts imports, and ECharts getting started. Package APIs change, so check those pages when upgrading.
3. Complete Chart.js example
Install and create the client chart
This example uses the React wrapper and the automatic entry point, which is the least error-prone first implementation. The file must begin with the client directive because the wrapper creates a browser chart.
// app/components/RevenueChart.tsx
'use client';
import {
Chart as ChartJS,
CategoryScale,
LinearScale,
PointElement,
LineElement,
Tooltip,
Legend,
Filler,
type ChartData,
type ChartOptions,
} from 'chart.js';
import { Line } from 'react-chartjs-2';
ChartJS.register(
CategoryScale,
LinearScale,
PointElement,
LineElement,
Tooltip,
Legend,
Filler,
);
type RevenueChartProps = {
labels: string[];
values: number[];
};
export default function RevenueChart({ labels, values }: RevenueChartProps) {
const data: ChartData<'line'> = {
labels,
datasets: [
{
label: 'Revenue',
data: values,
borderColor: '#2563eb',
backgroundColor: 'rgba(37, 99, 235, 0.16)',
fill: true,
tension: 0.25,
},
],
};
const options: ChartOptions<'line'> = {
responsive: true,
maintainAspectRatio: false,
plugins: {
legend: { display: true },
},
scales: {
y: { beginAtZero: true },
},
};
if (labels.length === 0 || values.length === 0) {
return No revenue data is available.
;
}
return (
);
}
The explicit registrations are the tree-shakeable approach. If you want the quick-start path instead, import Chart from chart.js/auto and pass it to the wrapper as documented by Chart.js; automatic registration trades simplicity for less control over the final bundle. Do not mix the two approaches unnecessarily.
Fetch data on the server and pass plain props
// app/page.tsx
import RevenueChart from './components/RevenueChart';
type RevenuePoint = { month: string; amount: number };
async function getRevenue(): Promise<RevenuePoint[]> {
const response = await fetch('https://example.com/api/revenue', {
next: { revalidate: 300 },
});
if (!response.ok) throw new Error('Revenue request failed');
return response.json();
}
export default async function Page() {
let points: RevenuePoint[] = [];
let loadError = false;
try {
points = await getRevenue();
} catch {
loadError = true;
}
if (loadError) {
return Revenue could not be loaded.
;
}
return (
<main>
<h1>Revenue</h1>
<RevenueChart
labels={points.map((point) => point.month)}
values={points.map((point) => point.amount)}
/>
</main>
);
}
Replace the URL with your data source and validate its shape before mapping it. The chart receives only strings and numbers, so the boundary remains predictable.

Use a smaller Chart.js bundle
For a line chart, register only the line controller, category and linear scales, point and line elements, and the plugins you use. A bar, doughnut, time scale, annotation, or custom plugin requires its own registration. Missing registration typically produces an error naming the unregistered scale or controller rather than a silent fallback.
4. Selective Apache ECharts setup
ECharts can be integrated with a React wrapper or directly with echarts.init. The direct version makes the browser boundary and disposal behavior explicit:
// app/components/TrafficChart.tsx
'use client';
import { useEffect, useRef } from 'react';
import * as echarts from 'echarts/core';
import { LineChart } from 'echarts/charts';
import {
GridComponent,
TooltipComponent,
LegendComponent,
} from 'echarts/components';
import { CanvasRenderer } from 'echarts/renderers';
echarts.use([
LineChart,
GridComponent,
TooltipComponent,
LegendComponent,
CanvasRenderer,
]);
type Props = { labels: string[]; values: number[] };
export default function TrafficChart({ labels, values }: Props) {
const elementRef = useRef<HTMLDivElement>(null);
useEffect(() => {
const element = elementRef.current;
if (!element || labels.length === 0) return;
const instance = echarts.init(element);
instance.setOption({
tooltip: { trigger: 'axis' },
legend: { data: ['Visits'] },
xAxis: { type: 'category', data: labels },
yAxis: { type: 'value' },
series: [{ name: 'Visits', type: 'line', data: values }],
});
const resize = () => instance.resize();
window.addEventListener('resize', resize);
return () => {
window.removeEventListener('resize', resize);
instance.dispose();
};
}, [labels, values]);
if (labels.length === 0 || values.length === 0) {
return No traffic data is available.
;
}
return ;
}
ECharts requires a non-zero container size before initialization. width: 100% is not enough if the parent has no width; give the parent a layout width and the chart an explicit height. The example uses CanvasRenderer. SVGRenderer is another supported choice; select one renderer in the tree-shakeable setup.

5. Loading, empty, and error states
A chart is part of a page, not a substitute for its data contract. Add a route-level loading UI while the Server Component waits:
// app/loading.tsx
export default function Loading() {
return Loading chart data…
;
}
Render a useful empty state when the API returns no points, and an alert when the request fails. Keep a textual table or summary near important charts so a keyboard or screen-reader user is not forced to infer exact values from pixels. Use meaningful labels, sufficient color contrast, and patterns or direct labels when color alone would distinguish series.

6. Lazy-load a chart that is not immediately needed
Next.js documents lazy loading as a way to defer Client Components and imported libraries, reducing JavaScript needed for the initial route. It is most useful for a chart below the fold, behind a tab, or on a route where users often leave before viewing the visualization. The improvement for your application must be measured; no universal bundle-size or speed threshold applies.
// app/analytics/page.tsx
import dynamic from 'next/dynamic';
const RevenueChart = dynamic(() => import('../components/RevenueChart'), {
ssr: false,
loading: () => Loading visualization…
,
});
export default async function AnalyticsPage() {
const points = await getRevenueForAnalytics();
return (
<section>
<h1>Analytics</h1>
<RevenueChart
labels={points.map((p) => p.month)}
values={points.map((p) => p.amount)}
/>
</section>
);
}
async function getRevenueForAnalytics() {
return [{ month: 'Jan', amount: 1200 }];
}
Use ssr: false only when the component cannot render on the server. Otherwise, let Next.js choose the appropriate rendering and measure the production build. The relevant framework guidance is Next.js lazy loading.

7. Choosing between Chart.js and ECharts
There is no evidence-based universal winner between these two libraries. Choose against the requirements of your product, then verify the current documentation and your own production build.
| Decision axis | Questions to answer | Evidence available here |
|---|---|---|
| Chart types | Do you need standard lines and bars, or specialized, coordinate, or large interactive visualizations? | Both projects document broad charting capabilities; select the type your product actually needs. |
| Interaction | Which hover, zoom, selection, drill-down, and event APIs are required? | Evaluate the interaction API in the current library documentation. |
| Accessibility | How will keyboard users and screen readers receive values and state? | Do not infer accessibility from the library name; test your rendered chart and provide a textual alternative. |
| Rendering and SSR | Does the library need canvas, SVG, layout measurements, or browser globals? | Client boundaries and a sized container are safe defaults for browser-dependent charts. |
| Bundle strategy | Can you register or import only what the route uses? | Chart.js selective registration and ECharts selective imports are documented options. |
| TypeScript and maintenance | Do the types, release cadence, license, and support model fit your project? | Confirm these in current project documentation and your dependency policy; they are not ranked here. |
8. Troubleshooting common failures
“window is not defined” or a document error
Cause: a browser-dependent library was imported from a Server Component or evaluated during server rendering. Fix: move the import into a file beginning with 'use client'. If the package still evaluates browser code during import, dynamically import the component with ssr: false.
The chart is blank or has zero height
Cause: the container has no height, the parent is collapsed, or ECharts initialized before layout dimensions existed. Fix: set an explicit or CSS-managed height, ensure the parent has width, and initialize after mount. Call the library’s resize method when the container changes size.

“X is not a registered scale/controller” in Chart.js
Cause: selective registration omitted a component required by the chart type. Fix: register the named scale, controller, element, or plugin, or temporarily use the automatic entry point while identifying the dependency.

Cause: the server and browser produced different initial markup, often because random values, current time, browser width, or locale formatting were used during render. Fix: pass stable server data, move browser-only calculations into useEffect, and avoid random chart IDs during the initial render.
Duplicate charts after navigation or hot reload
Cause: an ECharts instance was not disposed, or an effect created multiple instances. Fix: return cleanup that removes listeners and calls instance.dispose(); keep effect dependencies intentional.
Data arrives but tooltips show wrong values
Cause: labels and values have different lengths, strings contain unexpected numeric formats, or sorting happened in only one array. Fix: validate each point as a record, sort records before mapping, and reject non-finite numbers.
The production route is much heavier than expected
Cause: an automatic import includes modules that route does not use, or a chart is loaded on the initial path unnecessarily. Fix: use selective imports, lazy-load noncritical charts, inspect the production bundle, and compare real navigation behavior rather than relying on a guessed percentage.

9. Reliability and deployment checklist
- Run
npm run buildand test the production server, not only Fast Refresh. - Test narrow and wide viewports, zoom, reduced-motion preferences, and touch input.
- Verify loading, empty, error, and unusually large data sets.
- Keep API keys and database credentials in the Server Component or server-only modules.
- Confirm that dates, currencies, time zones, and units are formatted consistently.
- Provide a textual summary or data table for critical values.
- Check the browser console for resize-listener leaks and unhandled rejected requests.
- Pin or review dependency upgrades because chart-library APIs and framework behavior can change.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need an image of a rendered page or chart rather than an interactive chart component, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts a URL and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture it accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
One GET request captures a deployed Next.js route:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://your-site.example/analytics -o chart-page.webp
See the full parameter list and options in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. You can also use Python:
import requests
r = requests.get(
"https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://your-site.example/analytics"},
timeout=90,
)
r.raise_for_status()
open("chart-page.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Or Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({
access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY',
url: 'https://your-site.example/analytics',
});
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot failed: ${res.status}`);
require('node:fs').writeFileSync('chart-page.webp', Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer()));
For AI-assisted workflows, its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. Features include full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, device presets, retina scale, PDF controls, custom CSS and JavaScript, click and wait actions, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agent, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTL, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Existing screenshot-API parameter names also work for easier migration.
The Free plan includes 1,000 shots each month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; every feature is included on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to try it.

10. Final verification
- Open the route with JavaScript disabled or a blocked chart and confirm the page still explains the data state.
- Check that server logs do not expose secrets and that client props contain only intended data.
- Capture a production screenshot or PDF at the viewport sizes your documentation and stakeholders require.
- Recheck the official Next.js, Chart.js, or ECharts pages when upgrading dependencies.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I render a chart entirely in a Next.js Server Component?
Only if the chosen chart implementation supports the server-rendering path you need. Libraries that require canvas, browser globals, layout measurement, or event handlers belong behind a Client Component boundary.
Should I use a React wrapper or a library directly?
A React wrapper can reduce lifecycle code, while direct integration gives explicit control over initialization and disposal. Choose the approach that matches the library’s current documentation and your team’s maintenance preferences.
Why does a chart work in development but fail after deployment?
Production can expose missing registrations, server-evaluated browser imports, hydration differences, strict content-security policies, or a container that is sized differently. Always run and test the production build.
