Open Google Wallet and tap Add to Wallet. Choose the type of item you want to add, then follow the on-screen steps. Payment cards need approval from the card issuer; tickets and other passes may need to be added through the provider’s app, website, or email instead.
Before you start
Install or open Google Wallet and sign in to a Google Account. Google says Android 9 or later is required to use the app; some features also have age requirements that vary by country or region, and a screen lock may be required. Keep Wallet and Google Play Services up to date. For tap-to-pay, your phone also needs NFC hardware with NFC turned on, supported software, and Google Pay set as the default payment app. Rooted devices and work profiles are not supported. See Google’s setup requirements.
Add a debit or credit card
- Open Google Wallet and tap Add to Wallet at the bottom.
- Tap Payment card, then New credit or debit card.
- Scan the card or enter its details manually. In select countries, Google also offers an Add with a tap option.
- Tap Save and continue, review the issuer’s terms, and tap Accept.
- Complete any verification requested by your bank or card issuer.
Your bank makes the approval decision. If setup is declined, check that the name, CVC, and billing address match the issuer’s records. You can also try adding the card from your bank’s app or website if it offers Add to GPay. If the request is still declined, contact the issuer. Follow Google’s payment-card instructions and troubleshooting steps.

Add a loyalty card or gift card
In Wallet, tap Add to Google Wallet, choose the loyalty-card or gift-card option, and follow the prompts. The available types and steps can vary by merchant and location. Google lists items you can add in the app; check item availability if your card type is not offered.

Add a ticket, pass, or ID from its provider
For many tickets and passes, the provider—not Wallet—is where you begin. Look for Add to Google Wallet in the provider’s app, website, or email. Google gives event and flight tickets, health passes and some insurance cards, campus IDs, and transit passes as examples of items that providers can offer.
- Tap the provider’s Add to Google Wallet button.
- Choose Add to Wallet, verify your identity if prompted, and select a Wallet if the option appears.
- Review and accept the terms to save the item.
If you cannot find the button, ask the provider whether it supports Wallet for that item and your location. See Google’s provider-pass instructions.

Add a transit pass or pay by contactless card
Add a transit pass
In Wallet, choose Transit pass, select your public transport system, and follow its purchase steps. You can also buy through the transit agency’s app or website and save the pass to Wallet if that option is offered. Not every transit system is supported, and some passes need activation.
A transit pass can be saved to one device at a time. To move it, use Wallet’s pass controls or follow the transit operator’s transfer process. For activation problems, check your network connection and whether the pass has already been activated or deactivated; contact the transit provider if the issue persists. Use a contactless bank card
Some transit systems accept a supported contactless credit or debit card at the fare reader instead of a transit-specific pass. The agency sets the rules, so check its instructions before traveling. If the system requires the same payment method to tap in and out, use the same card on the same device for both taps. A phone and watch count as separate payment methods.

Wallet features and supported items vary by country or region and, for payment cards, by issuer. A missing Add to Google Wallet button usually means the provider has not offered that item through Wallet for your situation; check with the provider. Google describes regional and issuer differences in its Wallet overview and item-availability guidance.

Fix common setup problems
- Payment card declined: Match the entered billing details to the issuer’s records. The issuer controls approval, so contact the bank if it declines the Wallet request. Google’s card setup help covers troubleshooting.
- Tap-to-pay setup error: Check that NFC is available and enabled, and confirm your phone meets Google’s software and security requirements. Rooted devices, custom ROMs, unlocked bootloaders, and uncertified software can be incompatible. Review Google’s setup requirements.
- Pass cannot be added: Confirm that the issuer supports that pass type in your location. If the add button is missing, ask the issuer or provider; see Google’s item-support information.
- Transit pass will not activate: Check your network connection and pass status, then contact the transit agency if needed. Google’s transit guidance includes activation troubleshooting.
- Transit pass disappeared: Contact the transit provider about recovery. Google warns that removing Wallet or clearing its app data can remove stored passes.
