To show captions while recorded sermons play in a continuous YouTube Live stream, captions must reach the live broadcast—either as a caption feed sent to YouTube or as EIA-608/CEA-708 captions embedded in the outgoing video. YouTube’s live automatic captions may be another option for eligible English-language channels running at normal latency, but they are conditional and should be reviewed. Adding captions to a sermon’s YouTube recording is a separate process; it does not add captions to the live broadcast.

Choose how captions will reach the live stream

YouTube’s live caption guidance describes two ways to deliver captions: send them through a supported captioning setup to a Captions Ingestion URL, or embed them in the outgoing video using a compatible encoder. YouTube also documents live automatic captions for some eligible English-language streams. The right choice depends on language, latency, equipment or captioning support already available, and whether captions are needed live, on the archived video, or both.

Route What it requires Important limitation
Caption feed A captioner or supported caption software sends captions to the stream’s Captions Ingestion URL. Protect the signed URL. YouTube’s event guidance says each stream entry point can have one caption feed.
Embedded captions A compatible encoder outputs EIA-608/CEA-708 captions, and the stream is configured for Embedded 608/708. Although the standard supports up to four language tracks, YouTube’s guidance currently supports one caption track.
Live automatic captions An eligible channel, English audio, and normal stream latency. Availability is conditional; recognition can be inaccurate, and the live captions do not persist as the VOD caption track.

YouTube’s Live Streaming API says ultra-low latency does not support closed captions. Do not choose ultra-low latency if your caption route depends on YouTube’s documented live-caption options.

Set up a caption feed before starting the broadcast

  1. Choose the caption provider and confirm compatibility. Make sure the captioner or caption software can deliver to YouTube’s live caption endpoint. If you are looping prerecorded video and plan to use timed captions, confirm with the caption provider that its workflow stays synchronized through the loop; YouTube’s guidance does not give an end-to-end recipe for pairing a timed file with a continuously looped playlist.
  2. Open the live stream’s settings and enable Closed captions. YouTube’s event guidance directs the operator to turn on Closed captions in the stream settings before going live.
  3. Copy the Captions Ingestion URL and give it only to the intended caption operator. The URL is signed, so treat it as a credential rather than a public link. YouTube says one caption feed is allowed per stream entry point.
  4. Configure the caption software or operator with that URL. Confirm that the feed is connected and ready before the sermon begins. YouTube’s event guidance recommends a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay for the described setup; coordinate the delay with the caption operator so captions and audio remain aligned.
  5. Test and monitor the live output. Check that captions appear, are synchronized, and remain legible while the stream plays. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring streams; its general streaming guidance does not require purchasing new hardware just to add captions.

Use embedded captions when your encoder supports them

  1. Check the encoder’s caption output. It must be able to output EIA-608 or CEA-708 captions. A caption file attached to a YouTube upload is not, by itself, an embedded live caption track.
  2. In the YouTube stream setup, enable Closed captions and choose Embedded 608/708. Configure the encoder to send the corresponding caption data with the video.
  3. Verify the caption track in a test broadcast. YouTube’s documented guidance currently supports one caption track, even though the EIA-608/CEA-708 standard can carry up to four language tracks.

If you use prerecorded, pre-timed captions, ask the encoder or caption vendor whether it can keep them synchronized as the video repeats. YouTube’s published guidance does not specify a universal playlist-loop configuration for this case.

Consider live automatic captions only if the stream qualifies

YouTube’s live automatic-caption instructions specify English and normal latency. The feature is individually enabled and is rolling out gradually for eligible English channels, so do not assume it will appear for every channel or broadcast. Check the live setup for availability before relying on it for a service.

  • Review the generated text rather than treating it as a verified transcript. YouTube warns that poor sound, unsupported language, and overlapping speech can interfere with recognition.
  • Listen for clear audio and check names, scripture references, and religious terms in the output. These are items a ministry should review in its own captions, not accuracy guarantees from YouTube.
  • If accurate live captions are essential and automatic captions are unavailable or unsuitable, use a caption feed or a compatible embedded-caption workflow instead.

Add captions to the archived sermon separately

Captions displayed during a live broadcast and captions attached to its recording are different workflows. YouTube says live automatic captions do not remain after the stream ends; it generates new captions for the VOD, and those may differ from the live captions.

For the uploaded recording, YouTube’s caption guidance describes three options in YouTube Studio: upload a timed caption file, auto-sync a transcript, or type captions. Auto-sync may be unsuitable for very long recordings or poor-quality audio. Check the current Studio instructions and confirm the resulting captions on the recording; do not assume that captions submitted for the live stream automatically become its VOD captions.

Plan for viewers joining a long-running stream

YouTube DVR lets viewers pause and rewind a live stream, but DVR may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. Viewers cannot seek to a point before the broadcast began. If DVR is disabled, the full recording can still be watched once it is available. For a continuous sermon channel, tell viewers where to find individual recordings if they need to revisit an earlier service rather than assuming they can rewind indefinitely in the live player.

Troubleshoot caption problems

  • No captions appear from a caption feed: Confirm Closed captions are enabled for the stream, the caption operator has the correct signed Captions Ingestion URL, and the feed is active. If the URL may have been exposed, replace or reconfigure it through the stream setup rather than continuing to share it.
  • The encoder sends video but no embedded captions: Check that the encoder is configured to output EIA-608/CEA-708 and that YouTube’s caption mode is set to Embedded 608/708. A VOD subtitle file alone does not satisfy this live requirement.
  • Captions drift out of sync: Check the caption feed or encoder timing and coordinate it with any broadcast delay. For a repeating prerecorded video, confirm loop behavior with the caption provider or encoder documentation; YouTube does not publish a universal synchronization recipe for that arrangement.
  • Live automatic captions are missing: Check whether the channel has access to the feature, whether the spoken language is English, and whether the stream uses normal rather than ultra-low latency.
  • Automatic captions are inaccurate: Improve the audio conditions where possible and review the text. YouTube identifies poor sound, unsupported language, and overlapping speech as factors that can interfere.
  • The recording has different captions from the live stream: This is expected for live automatic captions: YouTube generates new VOD captions after the stream, which may differ. Correct or replace the recording’s captions through the separate Studio workflow.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo keeps uploaded videos looping as a YouTube Live stream from the cloud. To use it, upload the sermon recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home internet connection do not need to stay on, and StreamNeo can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream.

StreamNeo does not itself add captions or go live from a camera. If captions are required during the live broadcast, arrange a compatible caption feed or embedded-caption workflow and confirm it works with your streaming setup; captions added to the VOD later remain a separate step. Every slot streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, playlists, 24/7 looping, and support.
