To add background music to a prerecorded store promo on YouTube Live, mix the promo and music in OBS Studio or combine them in a video editor, then send the finished audio-and-video program to YouTube through an encoder. Use music licensed for the store’s promotion and livestream, preview the mix in YouTube Studio, and monitor the stream for copyright notices.

Choose music cleared for the whole use

Before editing, confirm that the track’s license covers the store’s promotional content, livestream distribution, relevant territories, and any archived replay. Calling a track “background music” or “royalty-free” does not itself grant those rights. YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility for necessary rights on the broadcaster, including music licensing rights: YouTube’s Terms of Service.

YouTube’s Audio Library is a practical starting point: YouTube says it knows those tracks to be copyright-safe on YouTube. Check each track’s license details; some Creative Commons tracks require attribution in the video description. YouTube does not vouch for music from other libraries. If the store also intends to use the promo outside YouTube, verify that the license covers those uses too; YouTube does not provide legal guidance for off-platform use.

Choose how to combine the promo and music

Approach Best when Trade-off
Separate sources in OBS You may need to adjust music volume independently or make changes during production. You must check source audio levels so the promo’s original sound and added music do not unintentionally double up.
One combined video render The music choice and mix are final before the broadcast. Changing the music level later means returning to the editing app and exporting again.

OBS can play local media sources, including common MP4 video and MP3/WAV audio files; VLC playlist sources can also play local files and loop them. See OBS Media Sources and OBS VLC Video Source. Either approach sends YouTube the encoder’s combined audio-and-video output.

Set up separate promo and music sources in OBS

  1. Create a scene. In OBS, add a scene for the store promo so the playback sources are easy to manage.
  2. Add the promo video. In the scene’s Sources box, select + > Media Source, create or select a source, and choose the local promo file. Enable Loop if it should repeat; leave it off if the promo should play once.
  3. Add the music. Select + > Media Source again and choose the music file, or add the appropriate audio source for your setup. Keep it separate from the promo when you want independent volume control.
  4. Check the mix. Play the scene and listen to the output. Reduce or mute any promo-source audio that should not play under the music. Adjust the music level in OBS while checking that speech, announcements, or other intended promo audio remain clear. There is no single mix level that suits every promo.
  5. Confirm playback behavior. Verify that the music lasts for the intended duration and restarts as expected when the promo loops. If the music is meant to continue across repeated promos, test the transition rather than assuming the sources will restart together.

If no live adjustments are needed, mix the promo and music in a video editor, export one finished file, and use that file as the OBS Media Source. Preview the exported file before streaming.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. Open YouTube Studio and enter the Live Control Room. Create or select the stream you intend to broadcast.
  2. In the stream’s encoder settings, copy the YouTube server URL and stream key into the corresponding OBS stream settings. Treat the stream key like a password: do not share it publicly, and reset it if it is exposed.
  3. Use RTMPS for encoder ingestion when available. YouTube documents software and hardware encoder setup in its encoder setup guidance.
  4. Start streaming from OBS, then wait for the incoming video to appear in the Live Control Room preview. Do not assume the stream is ready just because OBS says it is connected.

Test the output, then go live

Before the scheduled broadcast, run a representative test with the promo’s actual movement and audio. Watch the Live Control Room preview and listen on a target viewing device. Confirm the picture, music level, transitions, and loop or end behavior; also check YouTube’s stream-health indicators. YouTube’s live encoder settings list AAC or MP3 audio and recommend 128 kbps stereo at a 44.1 kHz sample rate in the advanced guidance. These are encoder-output recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular source or mix will sound right, so judge the actual preview.

During the broadcast, monitor the live output and YouTube Studio notices. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can temporarily interrupt or terminate a stream, and a license does not necessarily prevent interruption if the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel. YouTube’s guidance says: “If you’ve licensed third-party content to use in your stream, ask the owner of the content to add your channel to their allowlist through Content ID.” See YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance. If the broadcast is archived, review the replay for claims as well.

Fix common playback and rights problems

  • The music is missing from the preview: Confirm the music source is enabled, points to the correct local file, and has audible output in OBS. Check that its level is not muted or too low.
  • The music stops when the promo restarts: Check the sources’ loop and restart behavior, then test the full sequence. If synchronized restarts are important, combine the audio and video into one file before streaming.
  • The music is too loud or doubled: Lower the separate music source and check whether the promo file already contains a music bed or other audio. Mute or reduce any unintended duplicate source.
  • YouTube has no preview or the stream does not connect: Verify the selected YouTube stream, server URL, and stream key in OBS. Check YouTube Studio for connection or stream-health notices before going live.
  • YouTube flags the track: Follow the notice’s instructions and resolve the rights issue. If the store has licensed third-party music, contact the rights holder about adding the channel to its Content ID allowlist; otherwise, replace the track with music cleared for this use.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the promo should remain live around the clock rather than run as a one-time broadcast, StreamNeo runs prerecorded videos as a YouTube livestream from the cloud. Upload the promo, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing needs to stay on at home; each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. You still need music rights suitable for the promo and broadcast. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
