To add background music to a YouTube gaming livestream and keep it in the replay, choose a track whose license covers both uses, capture it as a separate source in OBS, balance it with your game audio and voice, and include it in the main stream mix. Test a short stream and watch its archived replay before relying on the setup: YouTube may scan live content and make a Content ID claim on an archive after the broadcast ends.
Choose music that is cleared for both the livestream and replay
The safest straightforward option is music downloaded from YouTube Studio’s Audio Library. YouTube says its Audio Library music and sound effects are copyright-safe on YouTube and will not be claimed through Content ID. Check the individual track’s license: if it requires attribution, copy the credit text provided in Studio into your video description.
For other music, do not treat a “free” label, a purchase receipt, or a credit in the description as proof that the intended use is covered. Read the written terms for the specific track and confirm permission for livestreaming and the resulting archived video, plus monetization, territory, duration, and attribution requirements if they apply. Creator Music is not a live-stream license
Creator Music terms are track-specific, and its availability may depend on creator eligibility and location. As of October 3, 2026, YouTube’s FAQ says the service is available to U.S. creators in the YouTube Partner Program, with expansion outside the U.S. pending. The FAQ also says Creator Music does not support licensing for live content. Do not assume a Creator Music license for a video covers a livestream or its replay; check current eligibility and the displayed terms in Studio. Creator Music FAQ

Check game soundtracks separately
Access to a game’s audio does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast its soundtrack. Check the publisher’s current policy and any in-game streaming or music settings. Permission depends on the particular game and rights involved.
Add music as a separate source in OBS
- Open your stream scene in OBS Studio. In the Sources panel, add an audio capture source for the music player. On supported Windows systems, use Application Audio Capture to capture the music application separately. OBS documents this per-application feature for Windows 10 version 2004 or later and Windows 11; other operating systems may require different audio routing. OBS Application Audio Capture Guide
- Avoid capturing the same sound twice. If Application Audio Capture is handling the music, disable the global Desktop Audio source if it would capture that same player too. Duplicate routing can make music sound doubled or echoey.
- Set levels in the Audio Mixer. Play a representative game scene and speak at your normal microphone level. Lower the music source until speech and important game sounds remain easy to understand. Keep music on its own source so you can adjust it without changing the game or microphone.
- Include it in the stream mix. Make sure the music source is routed to the audio track used for the live stream. If you record multiple tracks in OBS, remember that ordinary video players typically play one audio track at a time. For a recording that will be published without editing, put all sources intended for viewers—including music—on track 1. Separate tracks can be useful for editing, but a music-only extra track may not be heard in the ordinary replay. OBS Multiple Audio Track Recording Guide
Test the live mix and the archived replay
- Start a short test stream with the same scene, sources, and audio routing you plan to use for the gaming broadcast.
- Listen to the live stream and confirm that voice, game audio, and music are all present, intelligible, and not doubled.
- After the test ends and the archive is available, play the replay and check that it contains the same intended mix. If possible, listen on a separate device so you are not judging only from the OBS monitoring path.
- Adjust source levels or track routing and repeat the test if anything is missing or unbalanced.
This check matters because the stream mix and multi-track recordings do not always behave as a viewer’s ordinary video player would suggest. A successful local monitor is not a substitute for checking the archived video.

Understand live interruptions and replay claims
YouTube scans livestreams for third-party content. It may interrupt or terminate a live stream when it identifies such material, and an archived live video can receive a Content ID claim after the stream ends. A third-party license does not necessarily prevent an interruption: YouTube says creators should ask the rights owner to allowlist the channel through Content ID when appropriate. Confirm the license and any allowlisting arrangements with the rights holder rather than assuming a claim will not occur. YouTube guidance on copyright issues with live streams

If YouTube claims music in the replay
In YouTube Studio, review the claim details and available editing options for the video. Depending on the claim, Studio may let you trim the claimed segment, replace the claimed song with Audio Library music, or mute the song or all audio in that segment. YouTube says that, since June 2025, edits saved in Studio cannot be reverted. Preview the proposed result carefully before saving, and keep an original local recording if you need an independent copy. YouTube options for removing claimed content

Troubleshoot missing, doubled, or claimed music
- Music is audible in OBS but absent from the replay: verify that the music source is included in the track used for the live stream. For a recording published without editing, assign all sources intended for viewers to track 1.
- Music sounds doubled or echoes: check whether both Application Audio Capture and Desktop Audio are capturing the same player. Remove the duplicate route.
- Music is too loud or masks speech: lower the music source in OBS’s mixer while testing with representative gameplay and normal speaking volume.
- OBS cannot capture the player separately: confirm that your operating system supports the Application Audio Capture method described by OBS. If not, use an audio-routing method appropriate to your system and verify the resulting stream mix with a test.
- YouTube interrupts the live stream or claims the replay: review the claim or interruption details and the exact track license. For third-party music, confirm the license covers live streaming and archives and ask the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting. A “free” label or description credit alone does not establish permission.
- You need to remove claimed music from an archive: review Studio’s available trim, replace, or mute options, preview the edit, and retain a local original before saving an irreversible change.
