Authenticate a current Browserless screenshot request
Use the regional host assigned to your shared fleet, send a JSON POST to /screenshot, and add your API token as ?token=. The endpoint returns image bytes, so check the HTTP status before treating the response as an image.

Browserless authentication and destination-site authentication are separate. Supplying ?token= authorizes the API call; it does not log the rendered browser into a website. The current Screenshot API documentation reviewed here does not establish that arbitrary custom headers are forwarded to the target page. Do not put a destination site’s cookie or bearer credential in the Browserless Authorization header on the assumption that it will reach that site. Check the current endpoint schema for a documented mechanism before relying on target-site header injection. [Screenshot API]

Use the correct endpoint, host, and screenshot options
The documented shared-fleet URL has this shape: https://REGION.browserless.io/screenshot?token=YOUR_TOKEN. The documentation lists regional hosts including production-sfo, production-lon, and production-ams. Use the host associated with your account. Private-fleet or enterprise users should use their assigned private host; a private-fleet token sent to a shared-fleet URL can produce HTTP 401. [Screenshot API] [Private fleet documentation]
- Method and route:
POST /screenshot. - Body: JSON, typically including a destination
urland optionaloptions. - Image format: PNG by default; the documented options can select JPEG or WebP.
- Full-page capture: set

Why older Authorization-header examples differ
Older Browserless BaaS v1 guidance describes a Base64-encoded token in an Authorization: Basic header, but that page says BaaS v1 is no longer actively supported and directs users to updated documentation. It is not the current Screenshot REST API quickstart. A separate current API-reference FAQ mentions Authorization headers for some endpoints without establishing that /screenshot accepts one. Troubleshoot authentication and image responses
- Check the request shape. Confirm it is a
POSTto the correct regional host and the/screenshotroute, not a GET or a different Browserless endpoint. - Check where the token is sent. For the current screenshot endpoint, add it as the
tokenquery parameter. Do not put it in the JSON body or assume a generic Authorization header is equivalent. - Check the JSON request. Send a valid JSON body and include
Content-Type: application/json. Keep the destination URL inside the JSON body. - Read the status before saving bytes. An unsuccessful response is an API error, not a valid screenshot. Use your HTTP library’s status check or inspect the status and response body before writing an image file.
- For HTTP 401, verify fleet and host alignment. Confirm the token belongs to the host you are calling; private-fleet credentials may require the assigned private host.
- If the page itself shows a login screen, investigate target-site authentication separately. A valid Browserless token only authenticates the API request. The cited screenshot endpoint documentation does not establish arbitrary destination-header forwarding.

Does the Browserless Screenshot API use a Bearer token?
The current Screenshot API instructions specify the token query parameter, not a Bearer token header.
Can I use Browserless REST screenshots without Puppeteer or Playwright?
Yes. Browserless documents the REST call as standalone; it does not require either client library.
