WordPress’s built-in File block adds a downloadable file link, but its documentation does not describe an automatic file-type icon for each link. To show file-type icons in a managed download list, use a block such as Download List Block with Icons. If you only need one file, the core File block is the simplest option.
Add a downloadable file with WordPress’s File block
The File block is built into the block editor. It lets you upload a file or select one from the Media Library, then display a linked file name and an optional download button. WordPress media includes documents, spreadsheets, and code samples, as well as images, video, and audio. See the File block documentation and WordPress’s guide to image and file attachments.
- Edit the post or page where you want the file to appear.
- Add a File block using the Block Inserter, or type
/filein a new paragraph and press Enter. - Upload the file or select it from the Media Library.
- Adjust the displayed file name if needed.
- In the block settings, choose whether the link opens the media file directly or its attachment page. You can also choose to open the destination in a new tab and show or hide the download button. Hiding the button leaves the file name as a link.
For a PDF, the block also offers an inline embed setting. The documented File block controls cover links, the download button, and PDF embedding; they do not establish that the block automatically adds a file-type icon beside the link.
Show file-type icons in a download list
If you want a list of downloadable files with icons, Download List Block with Icons is a directly relevant option in the WordPress.org plugin directory. Its listing describes a Gutenberg block that selects files from the Media Library and displays a list with file-type icons, links, titles, sizes, and descriptions. It also describes controls for file details, direct-file or attachment-page links, icon sets, and custom icons through hooks. Those are features described by the listing, not independent compatibility or performance test results.

Choose a list block when visitors need to scan several downloads or see details such as file size and description. For a single file, the core File block avoids adding a separate plugin just to provide a link and download control.
Choose where each download link goes
A direct media-file link opens the uploaded file itself. An attachment-page link opens a WordPress page for that media attachment, which is served through the site’s template hierarchy. The right choice depends on whether visitors should go straight to the file or first see the attachment page. The File block and the download-list plugin listing describe controls for choosing between these destinations.

Use custom code for theme or plugin output
For developers building custom attachment output, WordPress documents wp_mime_type_icon(), which retrieves an icon for a MIME type or attachment and returns an icon or false. The wp_get_attachment_link() reference describes generating an attachment hyperlink and notes WordPress’s use of media icons to represent attachment files where icons are available.
These API references are starting points, not a complete drop-in implementation for every file type and theme. In your own output, verify that an icon is available, confirm the link destination, escape generated content appropriately, and check the front-end styling.

Do not confuse a general icon block with file-type detection
The separate Icon Block plugin is described as a tool for inserting SVG icons and graphics in the block editor. Its listing says that inserting an icon from the Media Library depends on SVG uploads being supported. The listing does not describe it as an automatic system that identifies attachment file types and adds the matching icon to each download link.
