Add useful alternative text, adjust the display options if needed, then save and preview the post. A featured image is a separate setting, even though WordPress also lets you designate an image as featured from an Image block’s menu.
Add an image with the Block Editor
- Open the post. In the WordPress editor, click in the content at the point where you want the image. The new block will be inserted at that location.
- Insert an Image block. Click the + Block Inserter and search for “Image,” or start a new block, type
/image, and press Enter. You can also drag an image file from your computer into the editor. - Choose where the image comes from. Select Upload to choose a file on your device, Media Library to select an image already on the site, or Insert from URL to use an image address. Depending on the site, the inserter’s Media tab may also offer Openverse images.
- Add image details and adjust the display. Enter alternative text when the image communicates meaningful information. Add a caption if readers should see text beneath it. Use the block toolbar or settings to adjust alignment, size, or resolution when those controls are available.
- Save and preview. Save or update the post, then preview it to check that the image appears in the intended position and suits the page layout.
Upload a picture from your computer
Choose Upload in the Image block and select the image file from your device. WordPress adds images inserted through posts to the Media Library, so an uploaded image is available there for later use as well. If you drag a file into the editor instead, WordPress inserts it at the drop point; check that the block landed in the right place before publishing.
Choose an image from the Media Library
Select Media Library in the Image block to reuse an item already stored on the site. This is usually the simplest choice when the image has already been uploaded or you want the post to use a site-managed media item. Select the image and insert it, then check the block’s alternative text, caption, and display settings for this use.
Insert an image from a URL
Choose Insert from URL, paste the image address, and press Enter. This uses an image hosted elsewhere rather than creating a site-library copy through this insertion method. The image can stop appearing if its owner moves or deletes it, or changes sharing or embedding access. Only use an image you have permission to use; an image being publicly visible online does not make it free to reuse.

Use Openverse when it is available
Some sites expose Openverse images in the inserter’s Media tab; availability depends on the site. When an Openverse image is inserted, WordPress says it is automatically saved to the Media Library. If the option is absent, use an upload, an existing library image, or another source you have permission to use.
Add alt text and a caption
Write alternative text for informative images
Alternative text, often called alt text, describes the meaningful content or purpose of an image for readers who may not see it. Keep it relevant to what the image contributes in this post. Do not fill it with search terms or repeat keywords. For an image that is purely decorative and conveys no meaningful information or function, WordPress advises leaving the alt text empty or marking the image as decorative.
Keep the caption separate
A caption is visible text beneath an image; it is not a replacement for alternative text. Use one when readers need a visible credit, explanation, or other accompanying detail. The Image block toolbar lets you show or hide a caption. The Media Library also stores image details including title, caption, alt text, and description.

Understand which alt text is being changed
Alt text entered in an Image block’s settings applies to that image in that particular post or page. Alt text saved with an item in the Media Library becomes the default when that item is inserted elsewhere. If you reuse an image, check the text in the new post rather than assuming a change made in one block updates every use of the media item.
Adjust image size, alignment, and presentation
The Image block provides resize handles and alignment choices. Resolution choices may include Full Size, Large, Medium, and Thumbnail, but the available options depend on the original upload and the site’s theme and media settings. Choose a size that fits the content area; do not assume that a named size corresponds to the same pixel dimensions on every WordPress site.
WordPress’s media settings allow configurable maximum dimensions for thumbnail, medium, and large image sizes. A theme can also affect how an image fits the post’s content column. If a selected size looks too small or too large, try another available resolution or use the block’s resize handles, then preview the post at the intended layout.

Put text over an image
If the design calls for text over a picture, the Image block can be transformed into a Cover block. This is a different presentation from an ordinary inline image. Use it when the image is decorative or when the text remains readable against the image.
Set a featured image separately
An image inserted in the post body appears at the point where its Image block sits. A featured image is the post’s designated image, which a theme may display on a home page or blog index. Whether and where it appears depends on the theme; setting one does not insert it into the body at the cursor position.

- Open the post settings sidebar and locate the Featured image section.
- Choose or upload the image to use as the post’s featured image.
- Save or update the post, and preview the relevant pages to see how the active theme displays it.
You can also open the Image block’s menu and choose Set as featured image. For template design, WordPress has a separate Post Featured Image block used in site templates and query loops; that is not the usual way to add a picture inside an individual post.

Use the Classic Editor
If the post opens in the Classic Editor, use its Media Uploader instead of the Block Editor’s Image block. The controls and workflow differ, so follow this path only if you are editing with the Classic Editor.
- Place the cursor in the post where the image should appear.
- Open the Media Uploader.
- Upload a new image or select one already in the Media Library.
- Choose the available display settings, such as alignment, link behavior, and size.
- Select the control to insert the image into the post, then save and preview your changes.
The Classic Editor’s size choices include thumbnail, medium, large, and full size. The theme’s content column affects how large an image appears, so a size label alone does not guarantee how it will look in the published post.
Choose the right insertion method

Fix common image problems
The image is in the wrong place
In the Block Editor, the Image block is inserted where the insertion point was when you added it. Move the block to the intended position in the content and preview the post. In the Classic Editor, place the cursor at the intended point before using the Media Uploader.

The image is missing after using a URL
Check whether the external image still exists at the address you inserted and whether the source still permits embedding. If it has moved, been deleted, or is no longer shared, use a replacement address or upload a copy you are permitted to use.
The image appears at an unexpected size
Try a different resolution offered by the block, use its resize handles, and preview the result. Theme layout, source dimensions, and media-size settings all affect the displayed result; do not expect every site to offer identical dimensions or sizing controls.
The image needs accessible text
Open the Image block settings and add alt text that conveys the image’s relevant content or purpose. If the image is only decorative, leave the text empty or mark it decorative. If the text is meant to be read by everyone beneath the image, add a caption as well; the caption and alt text serve different roles.
The featured image does not appear where expected
Confirm that the image is set in the post’s Featured image section or via the Image block menu. Then check the theme’s relevant page or template: themes control whether and where featured images are displayed.
