Review the image’s alternative text and presentation, then save or publish the page. The exact buttons can differ with your WordPress version, theme, and site configuration.
First, identify which editor your site uses
WordPress sites commonly use either the Block Editor or the Classic Editor. The instructions are different:
- Block Editor: you add an Image block.
- Classic Editor: you place the cursor in the editor and use the Media Uploader.
If you see blocks, a block inserter plus button, or a slash-command menu, use the Block Editor instructions below. If you see a single formatting toolbar above a large text area, use the Classic Editor section.
Add an image with the WordPress Block Editor
1. Open the page and choose the insertion point
- In your WordPress dashboard, open the page you want to change for editing.
- Click in the content at the position where the image should appear. You can use an existing Paragraph block or create a new one.
- Save the page as a draft while working if you do not want changes to be public yet.
2. Insert an Image block

- Click the top-left + Block Inserter, search for Image, and select it.
- Type
/imagein an empty paragraph and press Enter. - Drag an image onto a blank page or an empty Paragraph block.
- Open the inserter’s Media tab and choose an available image source.
After the block appears, WordPress presents choices such as Upload, Media Library, and Insert from URL.
3. Choose where the image comes from
Upload a file from your device
Choose Upload, select the image file on your computer or mobile device, and wait for WordPress to add it to the page and Media Library. This is usually the most reliable option because your site stores a copy rather than depending on another website.
Reuse an image in the Media Library
Choose Media Library, search or browse the existing files, select the image, and confirm the selection. Reusing a library item avoids creating another copy and lets you use its stored metadata as a starting point.
Insert an image from a URL
Choose Insert from URL, paste the complete image address, and press Enter. The image remains dependent on that external address. If the owner moves, deletes, or stops sharing the original, your page can show a broken image. Use this route only when you have permission to use the image; WordPress’s guidance is, “Only use images you have permission to use.”
Use an optional Openverse source
If your site shows Openverse in the Media tab, you can select an image there. Availability depends on theme support and site configuration. An image added from Openverse is automatically saved to your Media Library.

4. Set alternative text before publishing
Select the image and find the Alt text field in the block settings. Write a concise description of the image’s purpose, not a list of keywords. For example, “Three-column pricing table for the business plan” explains a meaningful chart better than “business pricing image.”
If the image adds no meaningful information or functionality and is purely decorative, mark it as decorative when that control is available. This allows assistive technology to ignore it. Do not mark an image decorative merely because it is attractive; decide based on what a reader needs to understand or do.
5. Add a caption or adjust presentation
The Image block toolbar and settings can expose controls for:
- Adding, editing, or hiding a visible caption beneath the image.
- Aligning the image within the content area.
- Changing the displayed size or choosing an available resolution.
- Resizing with handles.
- Cropping, replacing, or linking the image.
- Making the image enlarge when a visitor clicks it, if your editor and theme provide that option.
Use a caption when readers need context that should be visible to everyone. Keep the alt text focused on the image’s purpose; a caption and alt text do not have to be identical.
6. Save, preview, and publish
- Use the editor’s normal Save draft, Update, or Publish control. The label depends on the page’s current state.
- Preview the page at the site’s available screen sizes.
- Check that the image is in the intended position, the caption is readable, and the surrounding text still flows correctly.
- Open the published page in a private browser window if you need to verify what a visitor sees.
Which insertion method should you use?

Alt text, captions, and Media Library metadata
Block alt text versus Media Library alt text
Alt text entered in the Image block applies to that particular page or post. Alt text stored in the Media Library is the default used when the image is inserted elsewhere. This means you can describe the same image differently when its purpose changes—for example, as a product detail on one page and as a decorative background on another.

Media Library details such as title, caption, alt text, and description can also make files easier to find and can support accessibility and search optimization. Review the wording before reusing an old image whose original context is different.
When to use a caption
A caption is visible text beneath the image. Use it for a source credit, explanation, date, or other context that all visitors should see. If the information is needed only by someone using assistive technology to understand the image, put it in alt text instead.

What happens when you crop
Cropping in the media editor saves the edited version as a new image file and leaves the original in the Media Library. This lets you preserve the source while using a different composition on the page.
Add an image with the Classic Editor
- Open the page for editing and place the cursor where the image should appear.
- Open the Media Uploader from the editor toolbar.
- Upload a file or select an existing item from the Media Library.
- Review the available image details and insert the item into the content.
- Save or publish the page using the normal Classic Editor controls.
Do not look for an Image block in this interface. If you need block-level alignment, responsive behavior, or gallery controls, confirm whether your site can switch to the Block Editor before changing the page.
Add several images as a gallery
For a group of related images, use the Gallery block rather than adding many unrelated Image blocks. Open the block inserter, choose Gallery, and select uploaded or existing Media Library images. Arrange the items in the gallery and review its presentation before saving. A gallery keeps a set of images together and gives the editor controls intended for multi-image content.

Troubleshoot common image problems
The Image option is missing
You may be in the Classic Editor, inside a block that does not accept an image, or using a restricted editing role. Return to a Paragraph block and try /image, or open the top-left Block Inserter. If there is no block inserter at all, follow the Classic Editor workflow.
The image is not visible after inserting a URL
Open the image address in a separate browser tab. If it no longer loads, the external file was moved, deleted, or access was revoked. Replace it with an uploaded copy or a current URL for which you have permission.
The image appears in the editor but not on the public page
Preview or publish the page and check again. A theme’s CSS, a visibility setting, or a page-specific layout can affect the front end even when the editor preview looks correct. Replace the image block if it is empty, then save and reload the public page.
The wrong alternative text appears
Select the image on the affected page and edit the block’s alt text. Remember that block text applies to that page, while Media Library text is the default for future insertions elsewhere. If the image is decorative, use the decorative setting rather than leaving a misleading description.
A pasted image disappears later
When you paste an image from another document, WordPress may upload it to the Media Library. If the toolbar offers Upload to Media Library, use it to save a copy. Otherwise the page may depend on a temporary or externally hosted image that can stop working.

The image is too large, too small, or poorly framed
Select the image and try the available size, resolution, alignment, resize, or crop controls. If the original composition is unsuitable, replace it with a better source rather than forcing extreme dimensions in the editor. Check the result on both a wide and narrow screen because the theme controls the final layout.

- You have permission to use the image.
- The image is inserted through the correct editor for your site.
- Alt text explains meaningful content or the image is correctly marked decorative.
- A caption is present when visible context or credit is needed.
- An externally hosted image is stable, or you uploaded a copy to the Media Library.
- The page has been previewed at the intended size and saved or published.
