You can add an FAQ section in WordPress without a plugin. In the block editor, insert a heading for the section, then build each question and answer with Heading and Paragraph blocks. For collapsible answers, use the built-in Details block. A plugin is useful mainly when you need reusable FAQ content, categories, shortcodes, or plugin-specific features.
Choose the right FAQ format
| Format | Best for | What you use |
|---|---|---|
| Always-visible FAQ | Short answers readers should scan immediately | Heading and Paragraph blocks |
| Expandable FAQ | Longer answers or pages where you want to reduce visual clutter | One Details block per question |
| Plugin-based FAQ | Reusable libraries, categories, shortcode output, or specialized editor controls | A maintained third-party FAQ plugin |
How to add a basic FAQ with visible answers
- Open the content. In your WordPress dashboard, open the post or page in the block editor and click where the FAQ should appear.
- Add the section heading. Select the + Block Inserter, search for Heading, and add a heading such as “Frequently asked questions” or “FAQs.” You can also type
/headingin a new block and select the heading block. - Add each question. Insert a Heading block for every question. Use the same heading level for questions, and choose a level that fits the page’s existing hierarchy.
- Add each answer. Place a Paragraph block below each question and answer it directly. Keep the wording specific rather than combining several unrelated questions in one answer.
- Preview the page. Use WordPress’s preview option to check spacing, heading order, line length, links, and readability on a narrow screen before publishing.
Example block structure
- Heading: Frequently asked questions
- Heading: How do I add an FAQ to a WordPress page?
- Paragraph: Add a Heading block for the question and a Paragraph block beneath it for the answer.
- Heading: Can I make the answers collapsible?
- Paragraph: Yes. Use a Details block for each question.
How to create an expandable FAQ accordion
The core Details block provides a question-like summary that visitors can open to reveal the answer. WordPress documentation specifically identifies it as useful for FAQ content.
- Click the location where the expandable FAQ should appear.
- Open the Block Inserter and search for Details, or type
/detailsin a new block. - Enter the question in the block’s summary field.
- Place the answer in the content area that appears inside the Details block.
- Repeat for each question, then preview the published layout and test every question on desktop and mobile widths.
Make Details blocks behave as one accordion
If related Details blocks have the same value in their Name setting, opening one closes the others. This creates accordion behavior. Leave the Name setting blank when visitors should be able to keep several answers open independently.
Use accordion behavior when answers are lengthy and users usually need one answer at a time. Independent Details blocks are better when readers may compare several answers.

When a plugin is worth using
Stay with core blocks when the FAQ belongs to one page, the content is edited manually, and you only need visible or expandable answers. A plugin adds maintenance and another layer of front-end output, so it should solve a requirement that core blocks do not.
Consider a plugin if you need
- A reusable FAQ library that can be inserted in multiple posts or pages.
- Categories, filtering, or centralized editing.
- Shortcode output for areas that do not support the block editor.
- Specialized FAQ layouts or editor controls that your site’s theme does not provide.
Install a third-party block from the directory
WordPress can install the plugin associated with a third-party block selected from its block directory, provided your user account has permission to install plugins. After installation, review the block’s settings and front-end output before adding it to production content.

For example, the WordPress.org listing for Faqora FAQ Schema Blocks describes reusable FAQ blocks, shortcode output, and optional FAQPage JSON-LD. Those are claims made in the plugin listing, not independent findings. Check the plugin’s current maintenance activity, supported WordPress versions, accessibility, HTML output, and whether it duplicates structured data generated by your SEO plugin.
Should you add FAQ schema?
Do not add an FAQ section solely to obtain a Google rich result. Google’s August 8, 2023 policy announcement says FAQPage rich results are shown only for well-known, authoritative government and health websites; they are not regularly shown for most business, publisher, or personal sites.

Google’s general structured-data guidance also says markup must represent content that is visible to readers, follow its policies, and remain relevant. Correct markup never guarantees that a rich result will appear. Google says unused structured data does not need to be proactively removed, so an existing implementation does not automatically require deletion solely because its rich-result appearance is limited.
Keep visible content and markup aligned
- Publish the questions and answers visitors can actually read on the page.
- Do not place hidden, misleading, or unrelated text in FAQ markup.
- Prevent two plugins or a theme from outputting duplicate FAQPage data.
- Recheck Google’s current structured-data guidance before making SEO decisions, because search features and eligibility can change.
FAQ content and accessibility checklist
- Use questions that reflect real points of confusion about the page’s subject.
- Give each answer a direct first sentence, followed by necessary detail.
- Keep question headings in a logical order and do not skip heading levels just for visual size.
- Make link text descriptive and ensure keyboard users can open and close Details blocks.
- Preview the page at phone width as well as desktop width.
- Check that the answer remains understandable when its surrounding question is viewed in isolation.
Troubleshooting common problems
The Details block is missing
Use the Block Inserter’s search field and search for “Details,” or start a blank block with /details. If it still does not appear, confirm that you are editing in the block editor and that your WordPress version and active editor configuration support the core block.
Opening one answer closes another unexpectedly
Check the Details blocks’ Name settings. Matching names intentionally group blocks into one accordion. Remove the Name value or give blocks different names when answers should stay open independently.
A plugin FAQ looks different from the editor
Preview the published page, not only the editor canvas. Theme styles, plugin CSS, caching, and JavaScript can alter the front-end appearance. Test on an unpublished draft first and inspect whether the plugin adds duplicate schema or inaccessible controls.
